i can only make myself go through the mehndi night....the rest mayoun or whatever its called dont have the energy nor time........and the going out thing....couple things happened in the past two weeks that totally freaked me out...so i am trying my best not to go out as much....these days its all about online shopping
i've actually never heard of these rasams and thankfully i never had to go through them!
i was actually encouraged to wear jewlery and make-up (by my husband!) on the mehndi because it was what "everyone" was doing in pakistan at that time...obviously it wasn't heavy wedding make-up and jewlery, but light stuff.
i'm sure you'll look good either way. and for goodness sakes, take a shower! :)
Isnt this rasam conducted because BiBi Hajra sat in mayyoun rasams - i never knew these are hindu rasams, only the uptan and bridal shower is hindu part but not facing any men and going out of the room are muslim rasams i guess. its the songs and dances which are hindu rasams.
^ I doubt mayyoun is part of religion. Last time I checked , in Islam (our religion), the only necessary parts were nikkah and valima, THAT'S IT. Mehndi/mayyoun etc was just an addition because of hindu culture.. ask a arab or black or indonesian Muslim, if they do "mayyoun"
But i just asked my mother and she said that the woman who sits in mayyoun for 7 days her first wish is granted without a doubt - these days we just make the bride sit only a day or two but its necessary to make her sit for 7 days complete and perhaps thats why they also say that the bride sitting in mayyoun should not me left alone since the negative energy or jinns gets attracted to her
now i am all confused.
Song and dance aren't exactly rasams, they're just things that make the wedding more lively and fun.

It's not "necessary" nor is it realistic. Would you skip your finals? Can you sit there, being greasy an stinky for 7-30 days? Maybe this was do-able a generation ago, but not nowadays. You're right, anything religious cannot be wrong but I have serious doubts that mayyoun IS a part of Islam but rather a Hindu custom that has been adopted by Pakistanis.
no you just have to sit there for 7 days not more but maybe less. and why would some one arrange your marriage when you have your finals? :S dates can be changed - well songs for me would come under the category of rasams since people like them to be a part of the wedding more then anything else.
mayoon or mehndi are non islamic rasams sara.:) and i didn't sit in any mayoon and what happened in my wedding was only on the day of kehndi they put mehndi in my hairs and i took a shower after the function nd nothing else.
I personally would only go maximum 1 or 2 days without showering, just to fulfill this rasam, I wouldnt wanna miss any activities of my own wedding, but ill share a story with you. Warning: it's kinda gross. LOL.. My cousin was sitting mayoon for 7 days in pakistan in the august sweltering heat during THAT TIME OF THE MONTH!!!! all I can say is ewwwww that was soooo not pleasant, I swear it was impossible to sit near her, I don't know how she did that Im still baffled... so my point is, its not exactly a great idea especially if you're sick or having a summer wedding..
