I just heard from a friend that Punjab Govt. has yet again imposed a ban on lavish
weddings. Currently only one dish is allowed to be served in all wedding halls and venues. (As of May 1st, 2008)
The penalties include 5 lakh fine and 6 months imprisonment…
Anyone else heard of this yet? Correct me if I am wrong but this sucks!

Re: Wedding Halls - only 1 dish allowed as of May 1st/ 08 (Punj. Govt.)
wow.
i think it makes sense, really. the wastage is unbelievable. i heard india has banned all their exports of rice and lentils because they have a food crises at the moment... i wonder if its as bad in pakistan yet?
Re: Wedding Halls - only 1 dish allowed as of May 1st/ 08 (Punj. Govt.)
^hahaha, did you hear bush's ridiculous comment to india about rice?
but yeah, i think one dish is a good idea.. people can serve biryani or something and that's enough. while the main reason for people who attend these weddings is food, it's so hard for so many people to afford catering with the skyrocketing prices. we went to pakistan to attend this relative's wedding and since her mother had passed away, her older sister was doing everything for the wedding, even paying. and just a month earlier, the government had removed the ban from serving food. she was so worried and stressed out because as it is, they were having difficulties paying for the jewelry, jora, venue, etc.. and the food cost was adding upto more than 1 lakh.
Re: Wedding Halls - only 1 dish allowed as of May 1st/ 08 (Punj. Govt.)
if they really cared abou cutting costs to lavish weddings, why don'tthey actually try and get rid of the ridiculous jahez bullcrap that goes on in our culture?
Re: Wedding Halls - only 1 dish allowed as of May 1st/ 08 (Punj. Govt.)
its all crap.. im not in favor of this one dish thing. Log khane ko chor ke they spend on other stuff.. jab pahle ye hua tha what people did ke jo guest ae thay shadi pe unko gifts dena shoro kar deye thay.. :s Faida!!
Re: Wedding Halls - only 1 dish allowed as of May 1st/ 08 (Punj. Govt.)
^ ya true but than it wud come to the conflict that what if parents want to give away stuff to their daughters and they can eaisly do so in a hidden way too or just give cash. But even with this ban on wedding food again people r gonna break it with definately more than 1 dish at most weddings lol.
Re: Wedding Halls - only 1 dish allowed as of May 1st/ 08 (Punj. Govt.)
As much as I agree with the idea that its necessary to reduce the ridiculous burden placed on poor families...I have to say, this is kind of a silly & unreasonable law that's going to be flouted from day one. It's unenforceable...what are the police going to do...drop everything and spend November-January every year raiding wedding functions to make sure that no one is serving two kinds of saalan? Not to mention the fact that people will just find a dozen ways to get around the ban (as they did a couple years back)...

I have to disagree, when first time law was imposed. I was in pak.
pll did switch to one dish wedding. Almost every one approved it.
And so I hear about kite-flying. Strictly imposed no had courage to go against it.

I went to a few weddings in Lahore during the ban too.
The people who wanted to get married at the PC just had the sign outside the door mention some non-wedding function...and served a typical wedding buffet. Other people, who would have had a fancy wedding at a hotel or club just opted to throw a lavish wedding in a marquee on private property...an option that probably ends up costing even more than a normal wedding at a hotel/club would have (thereby defeating the purpose of the law itself).
Re: Wedding Halls - only 1 dish allowed as of May 1st/ 08 (Punj. Govt.)
I agree. But I also attended wedding where thy only served ice cream or Coke.
Good thing was host were ashamed to to do so.
Now imagine when this law is not imposed, every one is throwing a big party and some one decides to just serve ice cream on their son's daughters wedding.
I mean with out the law that wouldn't have been possibles.
Re: Wedding Halls - only 1 dish allowed as of May 1st/ 08 (Punj. Govt.)
i don't think the FOOD is what's making some of these weddings ridiculous, it the jahez and how people are spending loads on wedding planners, decor and clothes
Re: Wedding Halls - only 1 dish allowed as of May 1st/ 08 (Punj. Govt.)
I hope people won't break the law by bribing policemen, etc.
I think mostly ppl will either stick to a rice dish or a salan-naan dish with a sweet which makes lot of sense then having ten thousand dishes. Also since the country is in a severe food crisis, it is important that we consider how our spending can effect our surrounding and what can we do make things better.
People coming to these lavish wedding are not eating that food for the first time. I mean honestly just think of those ppl who are having a difficult time finding rice, wheat, etc to feed their families. Everyone who thinks 1 dish is not enough or they break laws for their personal satisfaction and showoff should really take a step back and think about all those ppl who are having a hard time feeding their families on daily basis.

Pakistan is among the top 30 countries on WHO list which are facing a severe food crisis.
Re: Wedding Halls - only 1 dish allowed as of May 1st/ 08 (Punj. Govt.)
My wedding date and everything was planned one year in advance. 1 month before the wedding they banned food entirely. It was a huge pain.
And it rained on my wedding day! In Karachi.
Wouldn’t have mattered since the wedding was inside the Sheraton. But we had to serve food elsewhere after the ruksati and no one thought to waterproof the tent.
Re: Wedding Halls - only 1 dish allowed as of May 1st/ 08 (Punj. Govt.)
i think this is absolutely terrific.
more economical than the complete food ban (coz people ended up serving elaborate dinners anyways, elsewhere) and definitely more affordable than having a 3-5 dish dinner.
btw, here's an fyi:
when they say 3 main dishes, it means 3 types of curries (or tikka, kabab's) and naan and rice and salads and deserts....
so you would still have a full dinner, just with less options for ur curry!
