Re: WC Points Table

Ireland versus WI?

Re: WC Points Table

In Pool A: Even though I believe, NZ would not need run rate to qualify, NZ threw their wickets but improved their run rate.

In Pool B: After Ireland beat WI, there could be situation where Ireland, Pakistan and WI would go into run rate to qualify for 3rd and 4th place. This can happen if WI beat Pakistan and Pakistan beat Ireland ... while all these three teams beat all other teams except SA and India. In such situation Pakistan, WI and Ireland would have 3 wins each.

If Ireland was beaten by WI than Pakistan only needed to win against Ireland and other two (Zimbabwe and UAE) to qualify. Situation has changed now.

Thus there is possibility, and I believe Pakistan should think about it, as Ireland and WI run rate at the moment is much better than Pakistan.

Re: WC Points Table

Most teams have just played one game, so things could change a lot from here.

Re: WC Points Table

You are right. Anyhow, WI and Ireland, one of them have to lose badly for Pakistan to qualify on run rate, as Pakistan lost badly against India.

Anyhow, I was watching a TV program (GEO) on world cup and to my amazement 'Basit Ali' made remark that if Ireland beats WI than it would be good for Pakistan. It surprised me, because Ireland beating WI is bad for Pakistan, as it brings in Ireland as contestant for quarter final.

For instance ... assuming that SA and India is unbeatable, and that Pakistan, WI and Ireland, all three beats UAE and Zimbabwe than:

If WI had beaten Ireland, than Pakistan only had to beat Ireland, UAE and Zimbabwe to get to quarter final. It would not have mattered if Pakistan had lost to WI.

Now, Pakistan has to beat Ireland, UAE and Zimbabwe as well as WI to qualify. If Pak loses to WI than decision for quarter final would be on run rate. So, things have become a bit difficult for Pakistan.

Well, if Pakistan beats WI, than it would not matter if Pakistan wins or loses to Ireland, as then Pakistan along with Ireland would qualify.

Re: WC Points Table

Just looked at both pools. Thought Aussies were in India pool.

Pool A looks awfully strong.

Re: WC Points Table

that means pakistan still has a chance, they need to win all the remaining matches

Re: WC Points Table

With big margin. Their net Run Rate is horrible

Re: WC Points Table

Pakistan still can qualify for the QF if the Pool B becomes the 'group of death'... :D

Re: WC Points Table

If Pak wins all their remaining matches (including against SA and Ireland) than Pakistan would surely going to qualify. Another possibility is that, Ireland or WI lose their matches with large margin.

Problem is not losing, but problem is unexpected upset in border line teams. For instance, SA and India are supposed to be guaranteed qualifier. Their winning or losing to each other could only effect their position (first and second) in table, unless they lose to teams below them.

It was expected that Pak and WI would also qualify as long as they beat their opponents who are not expected to qualify (Ireland, Zimbabwe and UAE). Amongst non qualifiers, Ireland and Zimb were expected at 5 and 6 position.

If any of the two (Pa and WI) loses against Ireland, Zimb and UAE than they have to compensate that by winning against team expected to qualify, else they would be in last 3.

After WI lost to Ire, that became the situation. Consequence of this situation is that, if they (WI) wins against team expected to qualify (Pak) than they bring in third team they lost to (Ire) in competition (than run rate would decide) ... obviously, if that third team is good enough to beat last two teams ... Zimb and UAE).

In present pool B situation, since WI lost to Ireland and won against Pakistan, they brought in Ireland into competition (if Ireland wins against Zimb and UAE). So, if all goes according to expectation than 2 of the 3 teams (Pak, WI and Ire) would compete with each other for 3rd and 4th position (even if Pak beats Ire ... but if Pak loses to ire than they are out).

Since margin of Pakistan loosing to WI and Ind is too high, it seems difficult that Pakistan would beat WI and Ireland on run rate.

Anyhow, situation could change if Pak wins against SA (and also wins their remaining matches). If that would happen than Pak would be in and one of the two, WI or Ire would be out (unless they beat SA too).

Other possibility for Pakistan is that they beat Ireland, UAE and Zimb with huge margin but WI and/or Ireland wins narrowly against Zimb and UAE ... or Pakistan has close game with SA while SA and India thrashes WI and Ireland badly, pushing their run rate much below Pak.

Rain washout in crucial game can also bring in Pak. For instance, game of WI/Ire with Zimb or UAE get washout, or Pak game against SA gets washout.

[Note: Rain washouts and unexpected results of other teams were main reason that Pakistan qualified in 1992 world cup semi-final, that Pak won]

Every thing is possible, but seems difficult.

Re: WC Points Table

Note: Situation in group A with Eng seems same like what is of Pak in group B. But that is not the case, as Eng lost to Aus and NZ (top two expected qualifiers). Anyhow, if England or SL loses to BD (as WI lost to Ireland in group A) than BD would only have to beat Scotland to qualify. In this situation, SL and Eng would be competing for 4th place to qualify. Suppose BD beats SL and SL beats Eng (as happened in group B, where Ireland beat WI and WI beat Pak) than most likely England would be out of competition (situation would be worse for England then what is for Pak, as BD got 1 points because of rain).

Anyhow, for expected teams (Eng and SL) to qualify, both have to beat BD (and other two teams, Scotland and Afghanistan), then it would not matter if they lose to each other.

Re: WC Points Table

Pakistan has to win all the rest of its games to qualify correct? Or can we lose to RSA and still qualify?

Re: WC Points Table

If we lose to RSA and Ireland win another game then I think it will come down to NRR. Ours is terrible atm :hehe:

Re: WC Points Table

We may qualify if Zimb beat (Ireland or WI)... or SA and Ind beat Ireland or WI with very big margin ... while we lose to SA with small margin. Pakistan may qualify if Pakistan beat UAE and Zimbabwe with very big margin, while Ireland and WI beat them with little margin. We might also qualify if Ireland or WI game against UAE or Zimb gets rain washed (as happened with BD vs Aus game) ... while, no such mishap happens with Pak (against UAE and Zimb) ... or if it happens than it happens against SA.

So, there is remote, very remote, possibility

Re: WC Points Table

Team winning 4 matches ... or 3 match and 1 rain washed match, would qualify,

Team winning 3 matches should have got qualified if bottom 3 lost to all 4 qualifying teams. In group B, that has not happened as Ire beat WI and WI beat Pak. Still, this can happen if bottom two teams (Zimb and UAE) beat one of 3 teams they are expected to lose (Ireland, WI and Pak). If that would happen than whichever team would lose is unlikely to get 3 wins (unless they beat top team ... India and SA).

Anyhow, as things are, most likely chance is that, Ireland, WI and Pak would end up with 3 wins (2 against Zimb and UAE, and one against each other ... that is, Ire against WI, WI against Pak, and Pak against Ire). If that would happen then two of them would go for quarter final on run rate. Here, Pakistani situation is so bad that it is unlikely they would beat Ireland and WI on run rate (though there is very remote chance that it could happen). There is also possibility that Ireland beats Pakistan, and if that would happen then there would be no hope.
