Way to go! - Govt installs wind turbines

This is where our focus should be. Makes me extremely happy to read:

DAWN.COM | Sindh | Government installs wind turbines in Thatta

“ISLAMABAD: The government has installed the country’s first ever 1.2 megawatts (MW) wind turbines for commercial power generation in Jhimpir district Thatta (Sindh).”

Are you aware of any solar related renewable energy farms in Pak? Please share.

Re: Way to go! - Govt installs wind turbines

Good i like it

Re: Way to go! - Govt installs wind turbines

6 MW with 5 units in first phase.

The target is 50 MW in coming years. Great!

And the costs are comparable to Nuclear Power, which in itself is not very expensive.

Re: Way to go! - Govt installs wind turbines

a small step towards a bigger destiny, but Alas something good to read.

:jhanda:

I am waiting to hear the news of the coal power stations.

Coal involves long and painful political wrangling, so don’t make your hopes high on that.

And besides its not that environment friendly.

Wind on the other hand is clean and of course unlimited,

Coal power stations? errr, we are in 21st century, right?

Brother, Pakistan has 3050 Million tones proved reserves of coal... it will be enough for next 200 years, if one forget about environment impact

Re: Way to go! - Govt installs wind turbines

^^Jee, thats really great. But as said before, it involves really a lot of politics.

We have already learned this bitter lesson for Kalabagh dam. So better go for the things which can be achieved faster and are long term.

Of course nothing against developing those coal resources in parallel, IF politicians find a compromise.

Captaan jee, there are many and yes many coal powered power plants in the world. and the new technology makes it much safer than before.

I can you can google it and get the latest info.

Re: Way to go! - Govt installs wind turbines

great news.

how many MW does it take to light up Karachi for a day?

Re: Way to go! - Govt installs wind turbines

Lets see..

6MW is enough for 60K average homes.

Now you calculate, :)

Re: Way to go! - Govt installs wind turbines

oo very nice, let's pray more investments take place

Re: Way to go! - Govt installs wind turbines

The Indian wind energy sector has an installed capacity of 8300 MW (as on March08).
pakistan has 1.2MW ........ hmmm
different priorities i guess.

Re: Way to go! - Govt installs wind turbines

Critics are gona come and criticize every single good step just for the heck of argument or nashukri
but to be honest m really happy to read this news and may Allah keep on bestowing our politicians with akal lol

OK now back to the thread.

It is a great news. But we must hold our celebratory attitude until we figure out the basic fact.

Pakistan's need: 20,000 MW
Wind power installed. 6 MW

Difference in supply and demand = Minus 19,994 MW.

We must build (and get the political solution at every cost) KBD and Sindh coal power, if we want to barely survive in 2035. Off course this assumes that we would have cleansed ourselves from other problems in order to be even in a position to use something called electricity.

For KBD, Punjab should give up majority of royalty in favor of Frontier. Electricity from KBD is much more valuable than puny royalties. And if Frontier wants, Punjab should simply transfer the whole damn city of Kalabagh. Afterall it is one country. If Kalabagh is in Frontier's jurisdiction, people will still be Pakistanis.

The same thing is true for Sindh. Give Sindhis the same rate as we would to imported electricity from Turkamanistan etc (OK may be a couple of cents less but you get the point). If Sindhis get rich, it will help Punjab too.

In the larger scheme of things, this royalty business is just a distraction.

Solar or Wind can only provide 2-10% needs. The bulk has to come from coal and nuclear with minor additions from hydel.

Did it also charging more then 50% population which are living on less then a $ a day ? Might be that's what is keep them living ... and living..

Re: Way to go! - Govt installs wind turbines

I wish these projects wouldnt cost so much for such little generation.. :( Oh well, its a step in the right direction nonetheless.

There is no free lunch. The more experimental the tech, the costlier it would be. That's why going with wind and solar is like buying expensive toys. They may give you a lot of pleasure, but in the end they are just toys.

The real backbone of any electrical system is build upon large projects that are mostly coal, and nuclear with minor contribution from hydel.

Any peace-loving country with cash can buy 1000 MW nuclear plant for $3 billion. However Pakistanis do not want to go that root so they have to rely on wind (and may be a lot more hotwind)

If reports are to be believed, Pak is planing additional 8000MW electricity with nuclear reactors till 2020, so please update your info.

Coal / Dams are political minefields. If it were up to you and me or for any common person for that matter, they would have long been built. These politicians would not let that happen for whatever reason.

It would be great to have them. But we can't just wait and stop investing in alternative energy resources. The money invested there is still better than ending up in political pockets.

The potential of wind energy is enormous. This is what Germany, Denmark and other european countries have discovered and producing hell lot of energy with that.

Solar is another source - not just through solar panels which might be expensive, but also with cheaper alternatives such as reflecting mirrors and so on.

So this is a small but great step in the right direction. I think we both agree on that.

2020 or 2050?

Our production from Nuclear sources doesn't exceed 600 MW (from two 300 MW Chinese plants). So far only Chinese are willing to sell us the plants because we are dead set on avoiding NPT.

And Chinese have a maximum capacity of 500 MW per plant. So if your info is correct, China has to supply at least 15 more nuclear plants in the next 10 years. This is more of a wishful thinking.

That's true. But do you even know what percentage of German power comes from wind compared to coal and nuclear?
