Watta satta ( وٹہ سٹہ) is a tribal custom of exchanging brides between two families. That is, both families must have a daughter and a son and be willing to betroth them to a daughter and son of the other family. For example, in order for one to marry off his son, he must also have a daughter to marry off in return to the same family.

Watta satta marriages do happen in large numbers. Nothing wrong with it as long as they are not forced or otherwise twisted i.e. buddhay chaachay marrying young girls and other crap like that. I have seen some watta satta marriages working out really well.
Re: Watta Satta marriages
Thanks Waterfall for the explanation. Ive actually heard of the custom just didnt know the name...not seen any happening either. My family isnt a big fan of it from what I gather.
Re: Watta Satta marriages
but why is it called 'watta satta'
whts tat mean
Re: Watta Satta marriages
Not a big fan of.. Neither is my family.. I know some watta satta cases in Pakistan.. and unfortunately.. None of them worked out.. Ended up in divorce because the other couple got divorced.. Kind of revenge..
Re: Watta Satta marriages
lol -- funny name to give a situation- watta satta- haha- but i think its pretty cool- as long as the wedding isnt the same day- that wouldnt b the best thing- 2 brides 2 grooms- ehhhh =/
Re: Watta Satta marriages
^ what about after the wedding? If one of the couples can't get along well, wouldn't it affect the relationship of the other couple?

Whats wrong with 2 brides and 2 grooms on the same day? A friend and his brother just got married on the same day. The ceiling didn't collapse on them for some reason.

Yea, thats the eff'd up part really. If one couple has issues, it normally has a significant bearing on the other couple. The original idea behind this arrangement is that the couples will have regard to this point and they will behave better than otherwise. Not a very sensible approach perhaps. But then, marriage is one of the most unpredictable things, anything could mess it up.
Re: Watta Satta marriages
One of my closest friend's family only believe in these kind of marriages. There whole family is married within one another i.e. mother married cousin, his sister married the wife's brother and so on and so on. Three generations have passed like this.
Recently my friend got married to her cousin, into the same family as her brother and sisters and she is not happy at all :(
Re: Watta Satta marriages
I believe in watta satta marriages, usually both the couples or atleast one of the couples isn’t happy with their married life…![]()
