I am watching Swat slip out of our hands. Out of sheer respect for the thread title, don’t bring in your distracting Musharraf vs. Benazir vs. Imran vs. MMA vs. Nawaz Sharif politics in here. Please just use this thread to update each other on what’s going on in NWFP regarding the Taliban takeover of our villages and towns.

And if anyone knows relatives in SWAT or nearby areas who can confirm stories in the papers, please do so! I don’t know if anyone has internet connection in SWAT that can report what’s going on…

MINGORA: A prominent religious scholar in Maidan, Swat, Maulana Mohammad Alam has warned the people to observe Islamic injunctions within three days or face their wrath.

The religious scholar, who preaches Islam through his FM channel, made this announcement while addressing a public meeting here on Friday.

He warned that anyone who violated Islamic injunctions would be punished after three days. He asked the women and girls students to observe **Pardah **according to Shariah.

Similarly, he said the men would have to grow beards within three days. He said that women would be allowed only to come out of their houses only to participate in marriages ceremonies and other events like death of their relatives, etc.

The religious scholar also directed barbers not to shave beards. He also asked all shopkeepers and traders to close their shops and strictly observe prayers time. A spokesman for Maulana Fazlullah, when asked, expressed ignorance of any such directives.

As I mentioned in the other swat thread, we have a friend in swat. the last we heard, his house had been burned to the ground by the taleban and we havent heard anything since.

My hub got in touch with his friend from swat last night. Extremely disturbing report. He and his family of 5 kids made it safely to Islamabad thank goodness. But his house is gone - his ancestral property from generations was burned to the ground. Taleban has completely taken over swat, they came in, rounded up 13 men and children at random and slit their throats. They told the people, we are here now, we are in charge now. If you dont follow our rule and our laws THIS is what happens to you. And they imposed their strict form of sharia. Police and local govt just gave in, unable to fight effectively. That was the state of affairs when our friend got out a few days back.

^^ Can you imagine any tribal group doing something similar in a Western country? The moment that happens, B-52 planes would do carpet bombing to take out the enemies of state.

Only in Pakistan, we give so much freedom that these snakes come back and bite the hand that feeds them.

Time to follow Western example, and bomb these anarchists.

This is HORRIBLE to hear, Mamaof3.

I find it DISGUSTING that those who are taking the time to write millions of posts blasting the government for their emergency rule aren't taking the time out to reply in this thread.

Just compare the replies in other threads, and then in the threads based on NWFP happenings.

And then it's obvious where Pakistani concern lies. People accuse musharraf of being more concerned of his seat? Pakistani people are the ones that are more concerned about giving attention to the seat than to the safety of their own countrymen.

Notice I said countrymen. We're eons away from giving a crap about our countrywomen.

It is truly a horrible thing going on in Swat. This friend told my husband with tears that "Swat is lost". 200 thousand have left the area (who can blame them). He asked my hub to tell news services here about whats going on there. I'm going to try.

i emailed anderson cooper about whats going on in swat with a plea to please look into it and report on it....lets see if anything comes of it.

Mamaof3: Please keep us updated on anything you hear. I am going to be writing to the news broadcasters as well. Extremist overthrow of writ of law in a province is no joke of a matter, and requires vigilance from all over the world.

I got an automated response from Anderson 360 that says that they DO read every email sent to them but cannot respond to every one. But hopefully they will find Swat a worthy report to persue. Prayers and fingers crossed that they DO SOMETHING!!!!!

If anyone has further suggestions of who to contact or what can be done, please post!!! Before the throats of more children are cut.

I am in no way in favor of ANY executions - even for the taleban fanatics who slit the throats of children. "Ideal program" on swat? How about just bringing to light what's going on over there instead of talking ad infinitum about the lawyers getting arrested. Whats more important here???? Shedding blood brings about more bloodshed. Like feeding frenzy with lions or with sharks. Put the talebans in jail, make them learn what the Koran ACTUALLY SAYS, not just how it SOUNDS. Maybe then peace will reign and things can start moving in a positive direction.
