Wastage of Food

Why they throw rice in weddings? Is there any usage for such thrown away food items in a society, which is suffering from food shortages?

There are people who believe and teaches their children not to step on food (grains, etc) considering that its a disrespect to food (rizq).

Re: Wastage of Food

There are organisations in saudi...who take away the clean uneaten leftover rice from weddings and give it to poor ppl.

PS: i didnt watch the video.Maybe you are talking about some rasm.I was talking about food (which in arab weddings is rice usually)

They do so in sindhi weddings

Re: Wastage of Food

I'm talking about wastage of food in whatever way.

why people waste food by throwing grains in wedding rasm or by having extra food during walima, etc?

Re: Wastage of Food

I think almost all the communities in sub-continent follow this rasm

Re: Wastage of Food

Extra food is just a precaution ...its better to have extra food rather than shortage of it.
But the extra should not be thrown away.
Leftover untouched food shoud be packed properly and given to the poor.
Leftover eaten food can be given to animals on farms instead of the chemicals they are fed.

Re: Wastage of Food

Not all but yes it's a tradition in some families.I don't know why do they do this.IS this a kindof blessing they try too give the newly wed couple?

Any one ever been to a traditional or old restaurant where food wastage by customer is prohibited

Re: Wastage of Food

The bride leaves home of parents by throwing rice / grains to give indication that her mayka always remain full of grains. Its kind of good wish by the bride to her parents. But if we look at the wedding customs including Jahez and all that, we found that parents got extra burden in form of repayment of loans, etc to fulfill such customs

Re: Wastage of Food

No, have you?

Re: Wastage of Food

How they restrict a customer to avoid food wastage?

Re: Wastage of Food

I don't think its just a precaution. When Government insists on one-dish waleema, people feel that they have been deprived of to celebrate properly. You, me and all of us raise a question after someone return from a daawat. 'Menu main kia kia tha?'

Re: Wastage of Food

There is a restaurant here ...where if you leave food unfinished...you pay a fine....it then goes to charity.

Re: Wastage of Food

what if customer didn't like the food?

Re: Wastage of Food

Do you think it's a good practice?

Re: Wastage of Food

I thought it was a hindu custom.I only saw it in indian movies done by hindus.
Kicking the bowl of rice kinda stuff.

Re: Wastage of Food

No, even when our people were not facing food scarcity.

Re: Wastage of Food

They are still fined.
Its a good move id say.
Cuz in saudi restaurants many ppl waste food.

Re: Wastage of Food

what about one dish in bulk? it is of course a precaution, i have been to weddings where people were staring atempty dishes because food was in such less quantitiy. Weddings should be arranged and planned accordingly, Host must know how many people will be coming.

Re: Wastage of Food

Done in Muslims too. May be we call it borrowed from Hindu, which is technically wrong. Its technically a rasm which has been carried forward inspite of conversion
