Washington!

What should be the monthly income of a single person to survive comfortably in Washington?

Re: Washington!

DC?

Re: Washington!

Yes

Re: Washington!

around 50-60k you should be able to manage.

Re: Washington!

yani 50-60 thousand dollars a month...right?

Re: Washington!

u working for some mafia?

salary is annual. if u r making around 5000 a month(gross) u should be able to just manage. Again I am not single living on my own. Maybe a single person can help u better. I have a cousin who is making that much and he is surviving in DC so im guessing it should be okay.

Re: Washington!

I have a colleague who has a job offer of $6000 in Washington DC, he will be moving from Pakistan, he want's to make sure that will he be able to survive in around $4500, so that he can send the rest of the salary back home.

Re: Washington!

TAXES!!!

Unless he is a republican.

Re: Washington!

$6000 a month? It is pretty good I think, he should not have problem.

Re: Washington!

Fantastic I think he will be fine.

Usually individual with 60K can live a decent life in NYC - i am pretty positive he can survive in Washington as well

Ask him to to find out which city he will be moving to. Find out on the internet about rental properties. Find out roughly what is an average car would cost him. I believe one has to have a car to travel around washington since public transportation system is not as great as NY - thats what i heard atleast

Re: Washington!

yes expect atleast 30% taxes. So 6000 gross will be 4200 net after taxes.

Re: Washington!

Car payment = $200
Apartment = $800
Utilities = $50
Food = $12 per day X 30 = 360
Car Insurance (newly arrived from Pak) = $100 a month
Entertainment = $100 (kanjoos estimate)
Other = $100 (laundry, co-payment, drugs, etc.)
Phone = $120 (both cell phone, internet and LAN)
Gas (haha!) = $100 (conservative)
Tax rate is 30%, and dont forget medicare, FICA which, if the emplyer matches them, runs you about 7%. We will go easy and assume it's an effective tax rate of 35%. Oh, dont forget health insurance, which can run you about $200 a month even after the employer matches it dollar for dollar.

Total of $2,130 X 12 = $25,560; assuming an effective tax rate of 35%, your gross salary would have to be = $40,000, so, yes, anything more than that is gravy.

Re: Washington!

^ $50 for utilities as in Electricity and Heating? You must be kidding me. Most apts now charge for Water too or somhow make the tenants pay for water directly so keep that in mind too.

Re: Washington!

800 for an apartment in dc? hahaha.

Re: Washington!

I think Dope's guy drives a Mini and lives in the car's back seat.
$50 for utilities? apparently the guy has no cable and lives off an internet cafe.
in halat mein Pakistan kyooN choRna?

Re: Washington!

FF,
not even an efficiency or a single on the outskirts of DC? Come on. I reserved $100 for gas so he an live within a 10 km radius of DC.
Okay, then how much would it run to get a single?

Re: Washington!

a wiser chocie if he wants to save is to get a roomy

Re: Washington!

Will you be living within the city itself? And what part? If you can stretch, you can live with $30-40K.

Unless you have a roommate, you won't find a place that's 800/month unless it's trash (and even then it's a stretch)

Re: Washington!

he is single he will share. :D

Re: Washington!

maryland is cheaper than virginia. living in dc itself is a big no no. i would say double the expenses listed by dope... and you will be in the correct range. a decent 2 bed apartment will cost you around 1500. thats why one should consider buying a townhouse or a condo.
