Waqar Younis, the former Pakistan captain who was dropped after their first-round exit from the World Cup earlier this year, has given himself a year to fight his way back into the national side before he retires.

Waqar, 32, <<<< they’ve got his age wrong  he ain’t 32 until november this year hit out at suggestions that he should retire immediately, and said he had high hopes of making a comeback.

“No-one can force me to retire and I won’t listen to anyone,” he told reporters, “and no-one in the Pakistan Cricket Board has told me to retire because I feel I can play for one more year.”

Shortly before flying to Australia, where he is to play some grade cricket, Waqar added: “I have had a good year with Warwickshire this year and hope I get another chance to play with them next year so I can fight back into the team.”

Waqar, who once formed a deadly bowling partnership with the now-retired Wasim Akram, was among eight players axed after the February-March World Cup in southern Africa. An official report blamed Waqar for his obstinate handling of the team, and said he did not co-operate with other players.

But Waqar refused to be drawn on the report’s findings. “It was disappointing to lose the way we did in the World Cup, but it’s not new in Pakistan,” he said. “I don’t want to be drawn into any controversy because I am still playing.”

Waqar, who has taken 373 wickets in 87 Tests, plus 416 in one-day internationals, insisted that a comeback was still on the cards. “I don’t want to come [back] as captain and am ready to stage a comeback as a player.”

He said he had recently held a meeting with Ramiz Raja, the chief executive of the Pakistan Cricket Board and a former team-mate. “I met Ramiz but it was nothing unusual,” said Waqar. “I will be back in Pakistan and will surely play in some of the domestic tournaments.”

i wish he plays on for a bit i mean he will be thirty two only later this year and he can still offer something at test level i’m sure, look @ mcgrath, warne, bichel etc they are in their thirties but they are still going strong and waqar bhai is one of the fittist guys in the paki cricket setup i’m sure he can carry on for longer anywayzzzz i am with him i wish him all the best

Waqar lost the plot 18 months ago. he's still a useful bowler but on the decline and if he's really 32 I have no idea why he has lost a yard of pace 2 yrs ago. Carry on playing by all means but stick to County cricket.

I hope he makes it back the current fast bowling squade looks quite good with two S's Umar, and Shabir. but i realy want to see him back. i think the current Pak SA Test series will test pak's bowling Resources.

he's lost his touch. He can't even swing the ball. I don't think he'll make a come back.

Well ur wrong if u fink dat, bcoz i hve a positive feeling dat he will be bak. not jus frm reading dis but frm b4.
Waqar is not 2 be blamed 4 da bad performance during da World Cup bcoz he tried his very best 2 keep da team 2gether, wen sum senior players nver wanted 2 play serious cricket.(1 of da senior player im chatting abt is still in da team n he has been given another chance), if u don't believe on my words read Richard Pybes interview after da world cup.
newayz i kno i want Waqar bak, n *Inshallah * he will be bak.
Don't u feel his experience is going down da drain, u can only form a new team wen u can train youngsters n 2 train youngsters u need senior players.
Experienced players will help da youngsters n 1 year won't harm Pakistani cricket, well it hasn't for years.
Hope 2 c Waqar bak!!!!!!!!!!

our young players are doing quite well without the "mentoring" of the seniors thank you very much. And you guys act like these seniors were saints or something, need i remind you of the bickering between two W's and the divisive nature in the clubhouse that was created. by the way, are'nt you going a little to crazy with the short hand writing.

i nver sed dat dey weren't doing well wid out da senior players.
n if u hve a problem wid my short hand writing Don't read it. only bcoz u don't understand it!

Well to be quite honest, i cant see Waqar making a comeback when we have bowlers of the calibre of Sami, Akhtar, Gul, Shabbir and co.

Waqar was a legend, but now his time is over.

Waqar just doesn't know when to quit. His time is over. Pakistan has to get on without him. While it does not reduce his contribution to Pakistan cricket or his status as a legend, the time has come for him to say goodbye to International cricket.

In all honesty, even if Waqar makes a comeback, he will just be a shadow of himself. He will have to rely on his previous experience, line, length and a hint of swing to get batsman out (the way he had been doing till he was axed after WC 2003).

Even if he makes a comeback, he will be competing Gul, Shabbir and the likes, for the place of third seamer, assuming the top slots have been occupied by Sami and Shoaib. I think this is a disgrace to such an honored name and a lethal bowler of the past. He should realize that he is well beyond his peak. He can drag his career for 1 more year (in the manner described above) but it will earn him more respect and dignity if he announces his retirement (something that he should have done after WC 2003, in my opinion).

i understand ur point of view but Waqar does deserve another year if he doesn't den Inzamam ul haq should quit 2, bcoz its the rite time for him 2 retire bcoz he woz also dropped for his bad performance. Bcoz the team has players like Hafeez, Yasir Hameed n Naved Latif.

I know he should hve retired after the world cup, but he feels he can still play jus like Inzi sed he can play for another 4years.

Nisaa, Inzimam only suffered a patch and now we have seen him that he is back in his form, the way he pulled that test from all lost to a win was simply amazing. Even if BD was a minnow still it is tough with 8-9 wickets gone.

Anyway, the comparison between two is not right. One is a bowler who has lost much speed and control (swing) over the ball, what else would be left for a "FAST" bowler?

Thats right and above all he can be re-called directly as a captain (even after retirement) by PCB we have seen this drama more than once.

Waqar was a great bowler and will always be amoung bowling greats but every great has to retire one day.

Isn't that the pic when waqar took the 1st catch for wasims wicket in W.C. It was the 1st wicket pakistan took in the 3rd over i think.

Nope. He wants to be back in the team within a year. Say mid 2004, he plays for another year, that is 2005 and then ditches the team and announces retirement. That is not very good planning for the WC in 2007. He will deny an upcoming bowler like Gul or Shabbir the required and necessary experience. I would rather play a bowler who will be with us for the next world cup. Younis should retire now, failing that PCB should ignore him.

Lets jus wait n watch wot happens!!
