Just heard on GEO that Waqar will be apointed as a bowling coach for a year and Zaheer Abbas will be appointed as Team’s Manager for the tour of Sri Lanka by PCB.
Also Waqar expressed that he would like to be appointed Pakistans team bowling coach till WC 2007.
Let me post the news item. Be right back.
=================================
:k: very good decision by PCB
**
Video includes Yunus Khan interview, news on Waqar being coach and cricket being played on ice.
Thank Heavens, I say. There is no better candidate than Waqar Younis (or arguably Aqib Javed) when the talk is raised regarding the pace-bowling department. I am sure he will do wonders for the team, as one can always hope from such cricketers.
Very glad to hear Waqar and PCB have succeeded in their primary negotiations this time around, unlike last time.
On another note, will Mushtaq still be around, or will he be released from his duties?
WOW!!!
What a wonderful news. At last PCB has taken the wise decision:dhimpak:
No doubt Waqar, if not the best, was one of the best candidate for the post.
Hopefully Woolmer n Waqar will be a lethal combination
And not to forget, we won’t be hearing BUTTTTTAAAAA in the commentary box.
:jhanda: :jhanda:
I am skeptical of great players = great coaches equation.
Just like Bob Woolmer or Dev Whatmore were never great players.
I mean, I hear Waqar speak on TV...and he does not come across as a man with remarkable insights about the game. I had the same impression about Kapil Dev...and he proved to be a dud as India's coach.
My 0.02$.
Keep in mind Waqar will be helping out the bowlers and not the whole team, i.e. his input will not be required primarily for fileding or batting.
I think we need to understand the difference between a bowling coach and A full time Coach like Woolmer PLUS the overall benefit when a team has a full time coach along with a full time bowling coach at the same time.
Woolmer had to take care of all the departments including batting and fielding. Pakistan have been tradionally weak in these 2 departments, comparing to the bowling department. Woolmer had to put special effort to focus on flaws in batting and fielding techniques.
Now compare the challenges faced by Woolmer with Waqar. There is no need to mention about this bowling skills. He would be coaching mainly 5-6 players i.e the bowlers. One would assume that Pakistani bowlers being more talented than Pakistan batsmen, should be quick learners and will benefit alot from Waqar.
I admit that a team playing under one coach either a batsman or a bowler often does not get the anticipated benefit BUT here in this case I guess this combination of 2 W's (Woolmer and Waqar) should work. They both will be working together, will be sharing responsibilities and this means that Woolmer can really put an extra effort in areas where needed.
Hope junior players from the under 19 world cup winning team can benefit from him as they look so good & promising and he can pass on his secret to the current bowlers.
I am skeptical about this appointment. Will a great bowler turn out to be a great coach. Time will tell. It does not necessarily follow that a great bowler will become a good coach. However, if he does coach successfully and produces another Waqar or Akram it will be great.
I don't know why people should be skeptical. It is not like PCB has replaced Woolmer and appointed Waqar in his place. With this new combination of Woolmer and Waqar, it can easily be expected that the results will be better than Woolmer working alone for the team.
I don't think we need to expect Waqar to be a great coach. We have Woolmer to do that job. Waqar will only be assisting the bowlers and thats it. And with his crendentials and skills, I am sure that he will be a huge help for the talented fast bowlers in our team.
So far his tips to those who want to learn (Rana and others) did work when used properly. I think with more decipline in the team and Woolie over the shoulder, the youngersters should avail oppertunity to shine themselves for Int'l cricket with a great bowler amongst them.
As long as Wasim Akram's political mind is kept away from the team, I will take any other coach shoach. I loved Akram as a bowler but he is too messed up when it comes to team politics. Vikki is a giraaeeN so he should be harmless.
Do you know his credentials? We will find out once we give him a chance. Do you really think it is going to negatively effect Pakistan team? As I said earlier Woolmer is still there and it is not like Waqar is replacing Woolmer.
While Waqar will be helping out the bowlers, Woolmer will be doing his job as a coach, as he has done for the last 2 years.
We had Woolmer and now we have Woolmer + Waqar. It is as simple as that. I can't understand why this is going to hurt Pakistan.
I agree. Even if he fails as Bowling Coach it is not going to harm Pakistani Team. I think, what ehsan bhai wanted to say is that, lets not get over-excited since we dont know how will he deliver as a bowling coach. He may turn out to be good . Who knows? I think it is good move.
It is like killing 2 birds with one stone. Pakistani team will get a bowling coach and cricket spectators will be spared by his cricket commentry.
ehsan bhai I think people here are getting confused or maybe I should say they are mixing two things. Coach and Fast/Slow bowler. Waqar is going to ONLY assist as a bowling coach NOT on every single thing. So I think this is going to be a great move.
Totally agree with fkah thats what exactly how I see. Two W’s working together and Waqar is a very proud Pakistani he loves the country and wants to do good for the country. Waqar will be only working on pace bowlers and only the bowling NOTHING else. Rest is taken care by Woolmer.
Good move, I really hope Waqar doesn’t poke his nose in Woolmer’s coaching affairs and stays in his own line when coaching, I’m sure he will make a difference. Wish all the best to our bowlers and team Pakistan
In terms of talent I think Wasim would have been a wiser choice. Wasim had a lot more variety then Waqar and could pass those on to able pupil. Waqar's main weapon was the toe crushing yorkers (atleast for the initial few years) bowled at blisterring pace. People like Asif, Gul and Rana do not bowl at that pace. They need a little variety. Maybe someone like Wasim could have a done a better job. Mera do sikkey.
