Wake up you Live in America.

Wake Up, You Live in America!
The Ongoing Insults of Thomas Friedman
By MAHMOUD EL-YOUSSEPH
Bigotry has once again reared its ugly face in a piece by columnist Thomas Friedman, published in the New York Times on March 2,2007. Part of his piece was based on a poem he retrieved from the Middle East Media and Research Institute [MEMRI] web site. It read in part:
“When you find that the large majority of people oppose freedom and find joy in slavery – do not be too distressed, you are in an Arab country.”
First of all, MEMRI is an organization that is well known for its anti- Arab and anti- Muslim reporting. It is founded and operated by a former Israeli military intelligence officer. According to a recent article published in the British Guardian newspaper, MEMRI reporting is slanted toward Israel and it disseminates information that defames Arabs and Muslims. Citing MEMRI as a reference on Arab/Muslim issues is like consulting Hugo Chavez of Venezuela about a documentary on the U.S.A.

Secondly, the last time an Arab nation had a genuine and free election on January, 2006, the United States , along with Israel led the Western nations in a boycott of the election results by imposing a collective punishment on the Palestinian people. Simply put, cutting off the food supply line and the millions a month in collected tax revenue that Israeli owes the Palestinian Authority.
When the Palestinians were asked to choose their own representative, the majority choose Hamas. Immediately, Secretary of State Rice has the audacity to demand the return of the 50 million dollars given as an economic aide to the Palestinians. A true lesson in promoting a democracy!

By contrast, when Israel elected its 11th prime minister in March 2001, it chose Ariel Sharon for the position. He was an indicted war-criminal by his own government for war crimes committed in Lebanon . America 's official reaction was, we do not interfere in the “internal affair” of other nations. So, the U.S. president rolled out red carpet for him at the White House and even called him a “man of peace”.

Thomas Friedman’s insulting of an ancient and rich culture is cheap shot. Perhaps Friedman should take heed from the popular saying, “If you live in a house of glass, don’t throw stones…” If I were to add to the above poem, for Friedman’s reading pleasure, and others like him who frequently degrade and bash Arabs and Muslims, I would propose the following:

When the leader of a foreign nation, like the King of Jordan could speak better English than your own president–don’t feel ashamed, you live in America .

When a married female school teacher has sex with five of her own middle school students–don’t call them the lucky 5, you live in America .

When you perform a DNA test on a 5 month old baby to determine which one out of 5 men is the biological father-- what a way to go, you live in America.

When 7 out of 10 adults surveyed could pick out a photograph of Yassir Arafat, but not those of their own Secretary of State or Secretary of Defense-- it’s time to wake up, you live in America .

When a mother pays for her daughter’s breast enlargement on her 16th birthday, so she would look more appealing to the opposite sex-- get out of town, you live in America .

When you elect a president who was arrested 3 times-- don’t ask, don’t tell, you live in America .

When your president’s name is reduced to one letter, “W” so he could spell it-- that’s silly, you live in America .

When you are able to sue the weatherman–what will they do next, you live in America .

When what was once called the “People’s House” suddenly turns into a ‘whore house’-- just ask Slick Willy, you live in America .

When you have more jails and more criminals that any other country on earth"I rest my case, you live in America .

When more people in Western European nations consider you to pose the most threat to world peace – the truth is a bitter pill to swallow, you live in America .

When 34 of your sailors are killed, 172 injured, and a 23-year old brave peace activist is run over by a military bulldozer by the same foreign nation, and you are not allowed to publicly express outrage, retaliation, or initiate an investigation without the fear of retribution-- don’t be a wimp, you live in America !

Re: Wake up you Live in America.

good article

Re: Wake up you Live in America.

good one.

Re: Wake up you Live in America.

Friedman is a known anti-arab anti-islam bigot...the sad part is he is most oft-quoted author the moderately enlightened crowd...

Re: Wake up you Live in America.

the author of this article is doing the same thing to USA as what he accuses Friedman of doing to Arabs and Muslims

Re: Wake up you Live in America.

Payback is a ***** isn't it.

Re: Wake up you Live in America.

source?

Re: Wake up you Live in America.

wanna know the source as well but most importantly the comments made by gora loag khissiyani billi kay mafiq.

oh, excellent article.

edit: never mind, google rocks!

Re: Wake up you Live in America.

The author of the article decided to attack America rather than the points of the poem, why is that?

When you cannot find a single garden in your city, but there is a mosque on every corner — you know that you are in an Arab country.

When you see people living in the past with all the trappings of modernity — do not be surprised, you are in an Arab country.

When religion has control over science — you can be sure that you are in an Arab country.

When clerics are referred to as “scholars” — don’t be astonished, you are in an Arab country

When you see the ruler transformed into a demigod who never dies or relinquishes his power, and nobody is permitted to criticize — do not be too upset, you are in an Arab country.

*When you hear the clerics saying that democracy is heresy, but seizing every opportunity provided by democracy to grab high positions — do not be surprised, you are in an Arab country. *

When you discover that a woman is worth half of what a man is worth, or less — do not be surprised, you are in an Arab country.

*When land is more important than human beings — you are in an Arab country. *

When fear constantly lives in the eyes of the people — you can be certain you are in an Arab country.

Re: Wake up you Live in America.

Oh it seems that the author forgot to mention that Friedman tells us who wrote the poem, it “was a Saudi author, Wajeha al-Huwaider, that was posted on Arab reform sites like www.aafaq.org

Re: Wake up you Live in America.

And we all know that payback excuses the one responding with inuslting comments, don’t we? :halo:

I think it makes them worse because not only are they doing the same thing they are accusing the other of doing, they are trying to claim the moral high ground while doing it.

Re: Wake up you Live in America.

Semi. moral high ground is something different from drawing comparisons. The intent of Friendmans comments are to impose superiority and look down with disdain. This is not the same as trading insults but about checking your own backyard before you claim such superiority over others. This is about over-inflated pride. About speaking of castes hidden in your intellect.

Re: Wake up you Live in America.

Wasn't the poem the work of a Saudi author? What was his purpose or does he get a free pass?

Anyway, isn't moral superiority and the supeiority of Muslims in general an integral part of the teachings of Islam?

Re: Wake up you Live in America.

Well, its been repeated Muslims dont feel superior and the ones who feel are fools. No one is superior in the eyes of God except for God conciousness, piety. Well, if the articles talks about US he is still writing the truth isnt it, so hardly matters but you got applaud the author for picturizing US in 10 lines wonderful.

No, one here is there to argue about the article but something else, well its time for you to answer and explain to us that US isnt this way.

Re: Wake up you Live in America.

Were the points brought up about Arab states (by an Arab) not the truth? I could come up with another 10 insulting generalizations picturing Arab states, but unlike you I don't see the need to post or praise insulting stereotypes and call them 'wonderful'.

These are the type of verses I think many Muslims use to jusify their 'superiority' to others. Granted followers of other religions have their scipture and claims of superiority, but I think it is safe to say that when one believe they follow the only, one, true belief and all others are doomed to hell implies a superiority.

"You are the best of the nations raised up for (the benefit of) men; ..."

"Behold! Allah said: "O Jesus! I will take thee and raise thee to Myself and clear thee (of the falsehoods) of those who blaspheme; I will make those who follow thee superior to those who reject faith, to the Day of Resurrection.."
- Quran 3:55

O you who believe, do not take [certain] Jews and Christians as allies; these are allies of one another. Those among you who ally themselves with these belong with them. GOD does not guide the transgressors.

Re: Wake up you Live in America.

Freidman was just quoting what he read...why attack him? But the comments about living in america are also unfortunately mostly true, though a bit exaggerated

Re: Wake up you Live in America.

^^ these are extreme cases

most americans are god fearing christians

USA's population is 300 million with 215 million are white, 40 million are spanish, 35 million are black, 10 million are Asians.

Most whites, spanish and blacks are god fearing christians.

Re: Wake up you Live in America.

Oh common guys. Fraud please tell me you found it an enjoyable read, as in, you laughed. This guy's an idiot.

Friedman quotes a spot on criticism of ALL of Arabia. Can you any reasonable human being argue against what was said?

This Yousef character on the other hand has made a mockery of rational criticism. By cherry picking news items and defining them 'Americanitic' characteristics, his lack of academic luster makes it obvious he's no Edward Said. Heck, he's not even a Ziauddin Sardar. This guy's broad generalizations make him a royal prick.

George Bush using W as an initial = being American? Common now Yousef, is that the best you could think of? Friedman's saying Arabs live in the 14th century and you have a bone to pick with America over an initial? What about you taking a go at your long winded Arab folk-hero Prince Bandar bin Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud? He sure loves initials too.

Friedman extended a rational critique of the Arab world. A critique MANY muslims share. Emotional Yousef on the other hand desires to grab a yellow notepad and scribble together an incoherent and casual point-and-laugh of modern science among other things.

Usual answer from your side doesnt mean anything to you rather to mee tooooooooooooo.

These are the type of verses I think many Muslims use to jusify their 'superiority' to others.
Put down thte complete post dear friend and where is the word superior, its called the best just because you live in US and you since US is a super power doesnt imply that you too should be called a super power, and moreover read the criteria and the complete verse. I have discussed earlier also.
"Behold! Allah said: "O Jesus! I will take thee and raise thee to Myself and clear thee (of the falsehoods) of those who blaspheme; I will make those who follow thee superior to those who reject faith, to the Day of Resurrection.."
- Quran 3:55
Again, your way of understanding its says superior in faith, dear friend and nothing else does it imply we are superior. I feel with superiory, joins attitude which leads to ego, well God abhors ego but loves humble people. I feel personally you can be more rational.

So whats wrong with, big deal and if you know the context of the verse then you would refrain from copy pasting, well to tell you this verse is in context of following them like we are doing today, which is unlike Islam(Here again we dont say we are superior i say its unlike Islam). IN that case why did Prophet, have a Jew neighbour, made treaties with them and overall jews came to the Prophet to hand over the money as he was the trustworthy.

Forget that when Umer conquered Byzantine, why was he kind to the christians, who called him as they were oppressed so where is your thinking cap now.
"Today I have perfected your way of life (din) for you, and completed My favour upon you, and have chosen Islam as your way of life."
- Quran 5:3
I dont have anything to say regarding this, its just your bigotry that you have pasted this verse which has nothing to do with superiority read it a million times and if you have an answer wrt superiority get back other wise forget it.

PS. This should have been in the religious section, since you have taken it up as usual we muslims provide non-muslims with answers but the vice-versa a good 90% is untrure, instead of answering the non-muslims try to turn the tables.:D

Take care
