Well, how ironic that Friedman is criticized like this. Friedman has done more to help Americans know and understand the Arab mind than almost an writer in the US. That he uses a poem which makes generalizations is simply for simplicity. Please remember that Friedman is a writer who won a Pulitzer Prize for a multi page expose on the massacres of Sabra and Shatilla. To say that he is anti-arab is transparent defensiveness.
As far as Memri, please show me some clip or item that is false, or a fake. I have not heard or seen anything that says that Memri documents things in the Arab world that are patently incorrect. The video clips they post are items that most of the mainstream US media would ignore. This is done partially out of political correctness, partly understanding that one video clip ma be an extreme view. At best Memri items can be said to be take out of context, or to be given excess importance. But to the discerning viewer it is eye opening to see some of the things that are said, published and broadcast in the Arab media.
Lastly, this piece is mean spirited. If you have ever seen Friedman speak, he has genuine affection for Arabs, as he spent years in Beirut as the Bureau Chief for the New York Times there. What Friedman does do, is to try to let Americans know how different the thinking and the mind set is in the Arab world from the way Americans think. If this process is occasionally offensive, the points of the poem should be debated openly point by point, rather than presenting the most insulting and offensive view of the US in retaliation. The writer is taking a bit of a defensive cheap shot rather than considering the points Friedman is trying to make. After all, Friedman is simply republishing this poem which was written by an Arab, and published in critique of the Arab world.
