Waar -- Box Office Predictions

Re: Waar -- Box Office Predictions

^^ Critics are benchmarking it against a good hollywood film -- which is unfair given the limitations of film making in Pakistan (lets just put it this way -- there is an absence of any film making infrastructure). *Waar *has to be seen in the context of how much it pushes the local productions forward technically and execution wise -- where it has done a tremendous job. The movie is also notable for absence of any cheap distractions, for which makers have to be commended. Shaan does very well, it comes across as a polished product. Therefore the IMDB rating of 8.1 is accurate.

Re: Waar -- Box Office Predictions

Pakistanis in Pakistan on this forum better go see this movie.

Re: Waar – Box Office Predictions

Re: Waar – Box Office Predictions

So this guy liked Zinda and Afridi but disliked Josh and Waar.

Re: Waar – Box Office Predictions

Rigid censorship destroyed the film industry after Zia or just plain bad productions did ?

How many movies can be made with 2 mils to follow Waar ?
How will one Waar revive the industry ? It took 3 years to see the light of day (or rather the dark of the theaters).

Many small budget movies with good stories will revive film industry.
Big movies need many theaters to recover investment.
Quality movies should be aggressively marketed in India also.

Re: Waar -- Box Office Predictions

Heard many awesome things about Waar

Re: Waar – Box Office Predictions

Indian media is pissed off at the movie :hehe:

Pakistan film depicting ‘Indian agents’ does roaring business

ISLAMABAD: As a police compound here comes under terror attack, an ‘Indian female agent’ cum social worker in Pakistan is dancing with a mercenary celebrating their success. This is a scene from ‘Waar’, a film doing roaring business here.

Said to be the most expensive Pakistani film ever to be made, the film is rumoured to be partly funded by the military, a charge denied by the film director Bilal Lashari.

The film is about Pakistan’s fight against terror but seems to lay the blame for everything bad happening in the country at India’s doorstep.

The script revolves around a plot by ‘Indian agents’ to carry out the biggest ever blast in Pakistan.

Waar opened on Wednesday on 42 screens across Pakistan and set a new record of box-office collections pertaining to Eid openings.
After a first day opening of Rs 11.4 million the big budget flick earned a total of Rs 42.6 million till Friday night, breaking all previous records of Eid collections.

Waar has also broken first day record set by King Khan’s Chennai Express that had earned around nine million rupees on Eid-ul-Fitr.
The film has received mixed response from film critics but has been hailed by many ultra-nationalists here who blame India for kidnapping, terror or assassinations that take place in Pakistan.

Not only that, the film bizarrely suggests that even the dreaded Pakistani Taliban is controlled by India.

“The entire patriotic narrative that RAW is backing Khawarij, political traitors and terrorists in Pakistan has been depicted well. #WAAR,” Zahid Hamid, an analyst known for his extreme anti-India statements said on Twitter.

However, many are also have a different view. “Propaganda is one thing, and can be found in any ‘wood’. I just wanted better scripting and continuity. And no accents FFS #Waar,” Zarrar Khuhro, an analyst tweeted.

Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, a three Emmy and an Oscar award-winning Pakistani-Canadian documentary filmmaker tweeted, “#waar has cliches but so do Indian movies v go 2 c- whether you like the film or not, watch it for the sake of supporting local talent.”

“I just found $2 million to cut from our military budget. #Waar,” tweeted PPP leader Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.

Waar is a story about a retired army officer who had taken an early retirement from the forces due to personal reasons. This lead role is played by one of Pakistan’s top actor Shaan.

Re: Waar -- Box Office Predictions

^Video..posted..was interesting. In salay indians ko kia takleef hai. They have got more anti-Pak movies made than anything. Double standard!..

Re: Waar -- Box Office Predictions

Read an article on dawn that thou it bagged crores it's still considered an "Average" movie due to the large amount spent on making it.

Re: Waar – Box Office Predictions

I don’t usually follow Pakistani entertainment much. But wherever there’s an opportunity to support Pakistan, it should be done. Period!

It’s also funny seeing the freak-out reaction from Indian media. The height of hypocrisy. They make a 100 propaganda movies, and expect Pakistani TV Channels to show them, even at the cost of circumventing the regulations that may be in place. Pakistani film makers decide to tell their version and suddenly it’s all sour. For that reason alone, I will urge all my family members to go and watch the movie and support Pakistani Film Industry. **

Hawkish** Indian spin doctors can go Pepto Bismol shopping in the mean time and take care of their verbal diarrhea.

Re: Waar -- Box Office Predictions

^Teggy for President!. This is exactly what i have been wanting to say..thanks for putting this to perspective. If they had released in Canada and US..i would have spent my money to watch this movie..and will for sure support our industry if they keep making good movies.!

Re: Waar – Box Office Predictions

This is an entirely fabricated narrative, gift-wrapped in high-res shots of Pakistan’s mountains and Meesha Shaafi’s legs - See more at:Make Love, Not Waar | The Friday Times

Re: Waar -- Box Office Predictions

In this narrative, the Pak army and its “premier” intelligence agency work on macs and solve crises before we know they have happened; NGO and human rights campaigners should be treated with suspicion because actually they are just foreign agents waiting to seduce and sedate you before dismantling the state; certain deluded politicians in Pakistan, rich and philandering as they may be, are still honorable because they at least salute the portrait of the Quaid-e-Azam that hangs in their houses; the head of our spy intel branch is a woman who wears jeans and hacks into files on her MacBook; the Indians just want to destroy everything for no reason other than a bit of fun; and the tribal terrorists have absolutely, positively and completely nothing whatsoever to do with the Pakistani Army. At all. God Promise.

Re: Waar – Box Office Predictions

yaar film to suuper duuper hit ja rahi hai :meeno:

Shaan uncle ka bhurapa sanwar gaya!!!

Re: Waar -- Box Office Predictions

Is Waar a hit? Hasan Zaidi wrote a really good piece for dawn explaining the economics of a hit or flop film. Here's an excerpt:

Now let’s take a look at the economics of Waar. According to the initial claims of the producers, the production cost of the film was 20 crore rupees (US$2 million). This would mean that the film would need to gross between 57 and 66 crores rupees **at the box office for the producers **just to break even (an ‘average’ film in box office terms). F*or ***Waar to be considered a ‘Hit’ it would need to gross between 114 crore and 133 crore rupees. For it to be a ‘Super-Hit’ or ‘Blockbuster’ it would need to earn at least 150 crores.

He's also listed the international box office rating criteria of a movie
**

  • A ‘Flop’ is a film that does not recover even 50 per cent of its cost.
  • A ‘Losing’ film is one that does not recover its cost but loses less than 50 per cent of the investment.
  • An ‘Average’ film (box office-wise) is one that barely covers its investment.
  • A ‘Plus’ film is one that recovers its investment and some profit on top of it.
  • A ‘Hit’ film is one that doubles the investment of its producers.
  • A ‘Super-Hit’ (or ‘Blockbuster’) film is one that earns at least 250 per cent of its initial investment for its producer.

Re: Waar -- Box Office Predictions

Trailer looks really promising. Almost had to pinch myself, could not quite fathom a Pakistani film being made on par with a hindi movie. This is a really good sign.
