It just hit me that for the cost of my 2002 Volvo S60 2.4t with 73,000 kms I could have bought a 2004 VW Passat 1.8t with 7,300 kms.
2 years younger and 10% the mileage.
Did I do the right thing? The chief advantages that I see in the Volvo is perceived better reliability in the short and long term, a better engine, better ride and better refinement. The VW would have similar build quality, would be roomier, and have the same specifications.

VW has always appealed more to me as a value buyer who wants the sport sedan experience but doesn’t need or want the “image” pricing of the glamour cars. I think VWs are generally a very good bargain for what they have to offer w.r.t. both comfort and performance.

VW's are good but volvo is in a class of its own. Volvo all the way. It is a car built with safety in mind yet very elegant and pleasure to drive. I have been a volvo owner now for over 10 years.

Ok, I finally put my mind to rest. I ended up with a sportier car and I'm happy with it. Vroom vroom, photos will inshallah be posted once winter's over and I get the pretty alloy wheels out of storage and onto it ....

Oh c’mon Ehsan Pa Ji … Volovo is no more a Volvo … it’s more “a Ford inside - a Volvo outside” … ever since Ford took over Volvo the quality has slided down the drain … over r the days when u could call a Volvo really an out-and-out swedish car … now it’s not

Not necessarily. Mercedes is a fine car, and perhaps one of the best luxury cars in the $70-120k range, however, unless you go for AMG package, Merc is not a driver’s car. Before buying my current car, I test drove MB, and decided it didn’t offer the driving experience I was looking for. I guess, at the end of the day, its a personal choice.
Re: VW Passat and Volvo S-60 … correct me if I am wrong, but they are in different leagues, IMO. If you consider new car prices, in US$, both automatic, VW Passat 1.8T starts at $23k, where as Volvo 2.5T (they discontinued 2.4T) starts at $31k. Thats a 35% price delta. So they are definitely not in the same class. Having said that Passat is an extremely fun to drive car. Though, the 1.8T engine is the same one used in Audi TT, A6, Golf, Jetta and Passat, one would think that with its bigger body size, Passat can’t be as agile as the smaller siblings/cousins are. Volvo is more staid and they sure hype their safety-first credentials, though if you consider the safety equipment (# of airbags, crumple zones etc), they are similar to many other companies, including VW. Plus, after Ford acquired them, Volvo’s build quality has reportedly gone down a notch, plus they are now sharing the infamous Ford parts as well.

I've got the same color too but mine is 4 years older than yours with black side skirts which I despise and planning to paint over myself.
