...Vista and Windows Media Player...

Those of you who have windows vista, here’s a question for you.

I am using firefox, the latest version 2.0.0.2. When I open some sites that need media player, such as the videos at CNN, it gives me an error saying “windows media player not detected, click here to get the player”. Fine. I click on the link and it downloads the file and tries to install it but fails because according to the error message, I already have windows media player version 11 (the latest one) installed on my system and it can’t install this older version that I am trying to install.

Can anyone who’s using vista check to see if they can access CNN videos using firefox please? I may need to go to media player website and download the latest version or the codex etc. Not sure.

EDIT: Went to microsoft’s site and tried to download the latest version 11, and that also confirms that I already have the latest version installed.

Re: ...Vista and Windows Media Player...

Reinstall Firefox?

Re: ...Vista and Windows Media Player...

I think the problem lies in firefox. Its not working with the latest mediaplayer. And you cant install an older version because microsoft doesnt want you to. You could try uninstalling it somehow and then reinstalling wm 10 or so.

Re: ...Vista and Windows Media Player...

I have wm 11 and when i was using the site cnn.com it said that cnn could not confirm the version of media player but i chose "continue playing" and everything went ok

Re: …Vista and Windows Media Player…

^ What version of firefox are you using?

DP I might try to uninstall 11 and install an older version, lets see if it lets me do it.

EDIT: I just checked the add/remove program list and media player doesn’t appear there :hmmm:

Re: ...Vista and Windows Media Player...

it says Firefox/2.0.0.2

Re: …Vista and Windows Media Player…

I have the same version and I am also trying to open CNN videos but for me it doesn’t open it. Here’s the screen shot of what I get.

Re: ...Vista and Windows Media Player...

i guess u should reinstall firefox.........by the way i am using win xp not vista

Re: ...Vista and Windows Media Player...

What I have got by reading all posts that there is an issue between CNN & WMP 11 - firefox is not an issue in the whole scene, or if it is then its the plug-in. If it plugin-issue please report this problem to firefox & they will look into this issue.

Re: ...Vista and Windows Media Player...

Shikra, I am using Windows Vista and FF 2.0.2 and i just checked CNN.com and i got the same error msg as you. Nothing wrong with your FF or WMP.

Re: …Vista and Windows Media Player…

this should work:

  1. Download the files npwmsdrm.dll, npdrmv2.dll and npdsplay.dll. ( Make sure your npdsplay.dll is version 3.0.2.629).

  2. Copy those 3 files to two places:

  • The Media Player directory, usually C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player
  • The Firefox plugins directory, usually C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins
  1. Restart Firefox and see if it’s working.

edit/ even found the files :hehe:

Re: …Vista and Windows Media Player…

Stay away from Vista till the 1st patch is released. So many loopholes I don’t see how it’s more secure then windows 95. I even tested the beta version for windows not to mention the final release and what amazed me was how a powerful company like Microsoft would release a product that would be no different then the previous versions. The only thing I like about vista was the fact that you can use (ALT TAB) and see the windows in 3-D.

If that’s amazing then I wonder what you call this… XGL baby.

Re: …Vista and Windows Media Player…

I am wondering what kind of practical use XGL has for an end user

Re: ...Vista and Windows Media Player...

Stop the fud ... share the loopholes you have discovered, fact is you have none!!!

Are you a security expert? please give us the benefit of your immense knowledge without perosonal biases.

Rock on !!!

Re: ...Vista and Windows Media Player...

Its Win+Tab actually!

Re: …Vista and Windows Media Player…

You don’t have to be a security expert to agree with something the entire computer industry agrees with. That’s like saying you can’t say the war in iraq is wrong since your not a war expert. http://news.com.com/Why+Microsoft+is+wrong+on+Vista+security/2010-7349_3-6123924.html

Try google.com = vista security flaws … almost every site mentions the fact that people wait 6 months or more after the release for the patch to cover loopholes. I’m not saying to drop windows, I use it myself  I love it but that doesn’t beat the purpose of my first post in this thread.

Re: ...Vista and Windows Media Player...

you guys are welcome :o

Re: …Vista and Windows Media Player…

Actually I’d like hear what you have to say about those “security holes” as well. I know everyone keeps saying its bad to upgrade and they all have their reasons. Are you basing ur whole theory on “them”?

I think its early to upgrade too, but just cuz I’m not prepared. U, on the other hand (if i’m not wrong) work for the BustBuys’ GeekSquad, why do you think its a bad idea?

Re: …Vista and Windows Media Player…

Guys, we have a winner

I downloaded these files and copied them to both of the mentioned places. Restarted firefox, opened CNN video, it gave me a warning that’s the plugin is not recognized. Gave me 3 options: Continue to video, cancel, and upgrade.

I chose continue and it took me to the video. Then I closed it to see if it’ll gave me the same message again and I opened another video, it gave me no message and took me straight to the video.

HP Support idiot couldn’t help me but Gupshup (well, dutch sahab) did it :k:

Now, how exactly did you know that these are the files that you need and this is where they have to be? Just because you know it or did you research into this? Either way, Thank you

Flame I am glad to know I am not the only one. Do exactly what DP suggested and you’ll be good to go.

All systems have loop holes. Vista is no different. Features wise, I kinda like it. It’s annoying right now because a few things need to be installed before it can be run on auto-pilot.

Re: ...Vista and Windows Media Player...

Agree 100 percent, I am using it since it was released last Nov. it has many many problems from compatibility issues to stability and crashes... Stay away until the first SP.
