Re: ...Vista and Windows Media Player...
Well HP sent me an e-mail and sent me a link to a page that tells you how to uninstall IE, how to fix it, how to install it, and everything with IE.
I wrote him back and said:

Re: ...Vista and Windows Media Player...
Actually I'd like hear what you have to say about those "security holes" as well. I know everyone keeps saying its bad to upgrade and they all have their reasons. Are you basing ur whole theory on "them"?
I think its early to upgrade too, but just cuz I'm not prepared. U, on the other hand (if i'm not wrong) work for the BustBuys' GeekSquad, why do you think its a bad idea?
Dude I can easily say the same exact thing to you. You're really contradicting yourself by saying it's too early obviously meaning you have some sort of doubts even though you're not a programmer (small time if any) or a rep working part time with geeky hair who has no gf at best buy.
It is a bad idea to upgrade as of rite now cause of hacker threats. If you're simply running it to browse GS and surf the web for personal use then I wouldn't see a problem in using it but I got my entire line of 13 stores behind the line and it's security is my #1 priority. From using VPN routers, to using static ip cams, etc... btw you don't have it yourself so what's the big fuss about?

Re: ...Vista and Windows Media Player...
U basically said the same thing as before, that its unsafe. My question was weather you have seen any particular security hole that you have experienced.
When I said I'm not prepared I meant I haven't prepared my network to support Vista yet. I'm working on it as we speak. I got Vista when it first got released in November 2006.
And please don't get personal with me about things, ever. I don't know you and now I don't think I want to anymore.

13 stores, that's it!!! I got 75,000 employees across the globe with Vista, wake up and smell the roses dude :)
It is onvious that you are biased and don't have any data to share. Show a report for Forrester, Gartner, IDC, etc. A name that we can trust. Or how about a report from McCaffe, Norton, CA, and other security vendors who can back your claim.
If you want to be succesful, you need to honest first and need to judge things without personal or political biases.

Re: …Vista and Windows Media Player…
I don’t know whether my laptop is crap or it’s vista ![]()
It was running fine til last night. I restarted it because it had been a while since I restarted my laptop. After that, windows never came up. Whether I choose to open it in repair mode or normal mode, it doesn’t reach the desktop. A blue screen of error pops up for a second and the computer restarts automatically.
The last thing I did before restarting it was that I used the roxio program for the first time that came with the computer because my brother wanted to burn some naats. I don’t think there was any virus or anything because I didn’t download anything suspecious.
I tried calling HP support and in one and half hour, no damn body answered their phone, so I hung up. Now I am reformating the drive.
Re: …Vista and Windows Media Player…
Since we know that most of the OS release patches to fix bugs, Vista may still be buggy & there might be patches coming for it from time to time. Initial releases of Windows always had these kind of problems.
Re: ...Vista and Windows Media Player...
I was expecting that but I really wasn't expecting it to crash within a month. I thought they would had improved it after hearing from people using the beta version but I guess they didn't. Oh well, will have to wait for the patch. Plus I don't know why they made it in such a way that some programs can't be used on it.
Re: …Vista and Windows Media Player…
for me vista wont play embedded media player videos in IE7 even… ![]()
Re: ...Vista and Windows Media Player...
/\ try reinstalling ie7
Rockistan: Boston and TB are right actually. Vista is safe and if you are so worried about security go with linux. True there are plenty of BUGS that need to be fixed, but those dont really have to do anything with safety in your context.
Re: ...Vista and Windows Media Player...
The only thing that concerns me is the compatibility issue. There are a few apps that are not going to jive with Vista. One was Symantec AV, for which they now have a new version out, hence I've started getting the network ready.

same here, I have some software that wont run on Vista, and I really need it. So I have to stick with XP for now.
Re: …Vista and Windows Media Player…
hey shikra, i got a similar blue screen of death but i dont remember if it was after a reboot..anyhoo the laptop restarted after the erorr and showed me this:
I clicked on check for solution and it actually came up with one. Windows has released a hotfix for the issue but oddly enough they suggest that it is better to wait for SP1 instead of downloading this hotfix..![]()
Re: ...Vista and Windows Media Player...
^^Both you guys, check the Performance and Reliability Monitor and in there click on the Reliability in the left Nav bar. It should then show you exactly what crashed and how.
Re: ...Vista and Windows Media Player...
^ But the problem with me was that it never brought me back to desktop. I had to restore windows.
I've done it now. Good thing I didn't have a lot of documents that I lost. Only a few and I'll get up to speed pretty quick. What I'll do now is this:
-schedule daily PM backups of important folders (and documents in them)
**If I set a partition on C drive, I know it becomes a separate drive, but can that be accessed in case system crashes? For example, currently I have C: and D:. D is for recovery and I was able to boot up my computer using D and it made my computer as if I just bought it. My back ups cause the storage space to end on D: so my hands are tied there. I wonder if I set a partition on C drive and store the daily backups there, I wonder if I'll able to access it in case the system crashes and I can't access C:
Also, people who may have tried this; When you do daily back ups, does it overwrite old files (in other words add files that are not there) OR does it store those files everyday in separate folders?
**
Re: …Vista and Windows Media Player…
usually the software overwrites the old version. but I believe that can be changed aswell. You could download/buy some software to create an E drive just for documents. I v done that and it works like a charm :k: second option: you could always enlarge the D drive :k:
try partition magic :k:
Re: ...Vista and Windows Media Player...
D drive came already as a "separate" drive, and since it has recovery files, I don't want to mess with that.
Would you recommend partitioning the C drive using the tools that came with windows? Lemme try and see how that works.

Honesty? What does that have to do with this topic? I am being honest to myself cause if you look back in history Microsoft OS's aren't great at launch. I mean it's that simple man... keep this thread alive and we'll see what happens. You'll see reliable names like BBC, CNN, heck even al-jazeera talking about it.
