When I posted that, there was no news of who was behind this. And it seemed like a typical Columbine type attack.
However, the guns in the US are part of the problem here.
Wht can u expect when a 12 year old kid can buy an assualt rifle in VA?
I hope universities everywhere will talk about this incident with their students.
At both Universities where I teach at, and where I am a student... we've received an email from the Deans... and we also got together in our atrium to hold a moment of silence for reflection and reconnection.
If you took a survey and asked people to classify a Pakistani the most popular choice would likely be Arab, sorry. Arabs = Muslims in a lot of peoples minds and Pakistan is an Islamic country hence the mistaken generalization for the people being Arab. That said bigger cities and people who are more well read would likely classify Pakistanis and Pakistanis as the Asian label is saved for Chinese, Korean, Japanese, ect...what you call oriental which I think is seen as a derogatory or improper term in the states these days but would also know better than Asian could very well mean Pakistan.
Story floating is that this guy was of Chinese back round here on a student visa. not confirmed.
Interesting. I know the US govt classifies Pakistanis etc as Asian. Maybe there should be a subdivision into "East Asian" and "South Asian".
I am shocked that Oriental is deemed offensive. Its common use.
why do these attacks occur in US with such regularity?
Senseless acts happen everywhere. North Americans are just more compassionate towards their own people - they report injustices. Other societies could care less if a man throws acid on his wife or if a rape victim is thrown in jail.
these attacks occur because of senseless right to arms law. funnilly its purpose was to arm everyday people to act as a militia against the central government if they ever tried to take over the individual states! its a draconian law. US should outlaw guns to save lives

It's not the guns, but the people who pull the triggers - huge difference. Canada has almost the same number of guns / capital, and so does Switzerland.
Tell me how that would have helped fool? How would this have been prevented?
Why do idiots always have to make this about the US, or Bush? Turn off your frikin' agenda for a day, and realize this was a mentally sick kid, and that could happen in any corner of the world. Random violence is not an excuse to make jabs at your favorite political targets.
My daughter is a Freshman at a big college. There is no one who wants to protect their kids more than their fathers. But the random nature of this crime cannot be prevented. We had an argument here, where some of Saddams' thugs used a drill to interrogate someone. Then people were wondering why drills were not on the sanctions list.
The point is with billions of people on the face of the earth, there will always be random violence. It is a fait accompli with billions of people. Take away guns, and this kid could mow over people in his car. He could make bombs with gasoline. The random senselessness of this is the stunning thing.
In the mean time try to be a good human and put your crappy comments away for the day.
