Re: Virat Kohli - A great batsman of modern cricket
oh yaaro, the thread is about Virat Kohli, so any discussion should've been about Kohli vs rest of Indian batsmen (present or past). I believe Kohli surpasses Tendulkar easily, Kohli is a master of ODIs specially in chasing situations. Tendulkar was a run making machine but more often than not his runs ended up in 'records list' while the result of match ended up where they wouldn't have wanted it to be. Kohli does not care much about records/centuries as much as he cares about result of the match.
Re: Virat Kohli - A great batsman of modern cricket
Absolutely. If Dravid was the Wall, Gavaskar was like The Great Wall of China. So difficult to dislodge. He had some wonderful duels with Imran Khan. IK got him the most times (18) in his career.
However not so good in ODIs. Gavaskar once made 36* as an opener in a 60-over match !!! (if I am not mistaken).
Yes. I believe it was the first world cup. 1975? Against England. John Snow derided him mercilessly. An outlier in an otherwise stellar career.
He would always keep his eyes on the ball. Defence - head down. Proper technique. Had all the strokes in the book.
His 36 reminds me of MAK Pataudis tortured 5. Either in Bravourne stadium against Greig Underwood and company in1973. Or against Gibbs Roberts et al at Wankhede stadium in 1975. He kept getting beaten. But couldn't get out! I had the misfortune of watching the great Pataudi struggle.
Gavaskar and Pat sometimes are known by these 2 innings. But these innings were simply a blip l in a great career.
Re: Virat Kohli - A great batsman of modern cricket
No doubt he is great among all others current Indians batsmen but while comparing with others countries in ODI's, I'll keep Hashim Amla ahead of him Who has great record in any condition!
Re: Virat Kohli - A great batsman of modern cricket
We are in that day and age when people often get confused while using terms good, great and greatest.
PS: He is a wonderful (good) player to watch in fact with his current form, he is a TREAT to watch but to be called “great”, he has to consistently perform for years in all conditions against all oppositions. Kid has only played 24 tests and most in his home conditions.
Re: Virat Kohli - A great batsman of modern cricket
VK has some ridiculous batting talent surrounding him from Dhavan, Rohit, Dhoni to Jadeja. He plays with ease and focus, which makes him handle even the most pressure situations with full confidence. It is a similar situation to Tendulkar when he was playing with Laxman, Ganguly, Dravid and others, which made his game even more perfect.
For any player to make his mark in international Cricket, he needs to have a great batting line up. I believe Amla, AB others did the same with each other. Similar case with Sanga and Jayawardane.
