I don’t know if there has been a thread open for Kohli, but I have recently watched him in India/NZ series and I am very impressed with his technique, temperament, performance under pressure and versatility. He has played several memorable knocks for India and is the backbone of the Indian batting at No. 3, after the departure of greats of last decade.

He has played most of his matches at home, so he's got an excellent record there. But he has to show he can bat away from home too.

I won’t call him a great in tests yet. Pujara is probably a better Indian test batsman right now. Kohli needs to play more away series. He has got the talent to become one for sure

He is a great ODI player not so good in tests yet. I wont put him in the league of Tendi, Dravid or Ganguly.

I agree, he is not in the league of Tendz, Dravid, Laxman and Gangz, but he could be down the road atleast for one days. He needs a partner at No. 2 or No. 4 to build long partnership. Right now India enjoys good batsmen till No. 7 and that kind of provide a safety net for middle order, therefore we see Dhoni hanging around with late order in most ODIs.

Above said I expect Kohli to become a better test batsman when he succeeds Dhoni as test captain (? after 2015 World Cup)
Michael Clarke was averaging in the mid-40s before assuming Australian test captaincy. He has managed to push his test average above 50 since then (although it has to be said that most of his huge knocks have been in Australia). Same thing happened to Steve Waugh
Imran also improved his batting when he became test captain (averaged 50+ in his 48 tests as captain as opposed to a career average of almost 38). I guess the additional responsibility of captaincy worked wonders for him
Virat can certainly become better than Laxman and Ganguly

btw, his performance in SA series was 31 and 0.
He might become a great player but his attitude in field doesnt suggest that.

^ yes, lets see. SA bowling is probably better at the moment with Dale Steyn spearheading the attack. But Virat has averaged only 20 against Aus in Aus in past.

Best Indian Batsmen**
Tests: Gavaskar
ODIs: Sachin
T20Is: Kohli and Yuvraj (MSD a close third, doesn't get a lot of opportunities as he bats so low down the order)
