re: Violence in Karachi [all threads merged]

Its extremely sad - can anyone from Karachi give details on how their everyday lives have been effected?

Hope the families who lost their loved ones will find the courage to bear through this ordeal.

re: Violence in Karachi [all threads merged]

^^^

Sad indeed. Politics and mafia gangs have merged.. and innocent people are suffering..

re: Violence in Karachi [all threads merged]

Clean Karachi from MQM bloodshed will stop

re: Violence in Karachi [all threads merged]

MQM gets out of government and this is how PPP/ANP gives payback. MQM’s members have been getting targeted since long, but after MQM left government they have started attacking common Urdu speaking people.

Iconoclast, why blame MQM alone? **By blaming this violence solely on MQM your hatred of Urdu speakers is exposed yet again.
**
EVERYONE should be condemned for the violence and this includes ANP and PPP members too.

If MQM is to be blamed for it then why is it demanding action from police and rangers?

Criticising police and Rangers for taking no action against armed militants creating widespread harassment in violence-hit areas, an MQM statement said that armed militants “have been attacking residential premises of the citizens…while police and Rangers…avoided taking any action against the militants”.

“Many people here had run out of their food stocks. There is no milk for children and no chance of patients being shifted to hospitals for treatment,” said Mohammad Asghar, a schoolteacher in the Orangi area.
“We are left at the mercy of trigger-happy scoundrels and the security forces are conspicuous by their absence,” he added.

re: Violence in Karachi [all threads merged]

**i really do NOT understand why this violence is allowed to continue? why are the law enforcement agencies not going into the lanes and by-lanes to catch the violators. i heard a high ranking police officer on TV say that "he can NOT destabilize the local residents." that's ridiculous! the residents of these areas are already facing the death and hardships. they can't go to work, stores are closed and they are running out of food.

i would say it's a matter of law and order so those agencies must stop this violence at any cost...go in and wipe out those thugs once for all. **

re: Violence in Karachi [all threads merged]

^^ Law enforcement agencies are under Rehman Malik and Sindh Govt. making sure that they kill as many as possible, otherwise, Karachi is not Waziristan, what is stoppong the police and rangers to take action against criminals, but when the mentality of the center is to turn a blind eye to save govts or enforce law to blackmail others.. then this is what is done... these killings were there since PPP tookover in the center,, and would continue, as killing innocents, loooting them is all PPP is good at...

re: Violence in Karachi [all threads merged]

**i agree...it's the impotency and lack of political will due to corrupt politicians and stupids like Rehman Malik are the reasons. this must stop as Karachi is the economic engine of the country and if it goes down so will the whole country. political instability is the core reason why there is almost NO foreign investment in the country.

it's the peoples responsibility to rise up and bring in a revolution likes of Egypt, Tunisia etc. **

re: Violence in Karachi [all threads merged]

MQM will not do anything which will hurt its own constituencies. Besides, MQM has been striving very hard to develop its vote bank in other parts of the country, especially Punjab. Violence in Karachi from MQM will kill any such chances.
So both can not be true at the same time. MQM either would want violence in Karachi, or it would want votes from other parts of country.

This shows that it is not MQM's policy to create chaos and violence in Karachi.

re: Violence in Karachi [all threads merged]

what policy of the PPP led govt have made you think that they are remotely interested in the development of Pakistan, they did whatever they can to stop the economic activity, they have forced closure to many industries by simply cutting power-supply... they have forced many others to leave Pakistan and operate from Bangladesh and Malaysia an Dubai....

I guess you won't see any PPP supporter who can say anything about it, and if some comes here, he would be talking about how bhutto got hanged or how benazir was killed while Rehman Malik was her chief security officer....

re: Violence in Karachi [all threads merged]

MAY 12 2007 VIOLENCE IS ALSO BLAMED ON MQM.
But Wikileaks shows that MQM did not want violence at that time either.

http://www.dawn.com/2011/05/31/2007-babar-ghauri-said-may-12-violence-killed-mqm-s-chances-in-punjab-2.html

On June 1, Charge met with Minister of Ports and Shipping (and MQM member) Babar Khan Ghauri to discuss the May 11-13 violence in Karachi. Ghauri said the Karachi violence had “killed” the MQM`s chances of gaining voters in Punjab province. The party was focusing on repairing its reputation in Karachi and Sindh.

  1. (C) According to Ghauri, police and Sindh Rangers were stationed at key “buffer” points in Karachi on May 12, anticipating clashes between opposition and MQM activists. At around 2:00 a.m., the officers abandoned their positions. (Note: The Rangers, like the Karachi police, might have been under local orders not to intervene (ref A). End Note.) Ghauri reported that on May 13, after a phone call with Governor of Sindh Ishrat-ul-Ebad, President Musharraf ordered police and rangers onto the streets in Karachi.Ghauri also said Musharraf asked PML-Q coalition partners to maintain a public posture that would not cause undue political damage to the MQM. Regarding whether MQM head Altaf Hussain played any part in planning the violence, Ghauri said “No, absolutely not. We were trying to expand into Punjab; how would we have benefited from this?” (Note: Reliable Embassy and Consulate Karachi contacts believe that at the very least Hussain suspected there would be violence on May 12 and supported the MQM counter-rally in any case. End Note.)

  2. (C) Comment: Ghauri confirmed what in-country MQM leader Farooq Sattar told us in a May 17 phone call (ref C): the events of May 11-13 in Karachi deeply wounded the MQM. Ghauri noted several times during the meeting that his party`s leadership felt “alone” and that they were worried the PML-Q would abandon them. Indeed, a number of PML-Q contacts privately tell us they believe MQM was culpable for the events, and the PML-Q should distance itself from the MQM to prevent damage to its own reputation.

They say: بد اچھا ، بدنام برا
I think MQM is more بدنام than it is بد

re: Violence in Karachi [all threads merged]

^^ MQM may not have hand in recent act of violence, but they certainly were in bed in mushy and did whatever was in their power to stop CJ's visit to Karachi Bar...this also includes killing people on the streets on May 12, 2007 and burning lawyers alive in April 2008

but as u have said, if they were innocent and people were being killed while they were in govt, at every level, then they should have resigned in protest to this conspiracy...which we never saw happening

re: Violence in Karachi [all threads merged]

^ So you are saying MQM itself orchestrated May 12 violence?
But that's exactly what wikileaks cables negate. That was the whole purpose of post no. 11.

When violence starts then it knows no limits. Anything can happen then. I can't say that no MQM member has ever been involved in violence. But I am saying that blaming the start of violence on MQM is/was wrong.

MQM's decision to support army was political decision which people can agree or disagree with. But violence was not what MQM wanted. It was not the policy of the party.

re: Violence in Karachi [all threads merged]

I am not from Karachi so I Am not aware of it's political situation, it's only that what I hear/ read in the media. In the past mqm has been a big party to the violence in Karachi, presently I am not sure. Besides it's the responsibility of the sindh government/interior ministry to punish and expose all people who are behind this violence. No one has publicly implicated mqm for this violence as yet, besides there are three kind of target killings being carried out, political, gang war, taleban versus Sunni Tehreek. The violence is spreading, if not controlled we might see a repeat of the 90's.

re: Violence in Karachi [all threads merged]

We watch TV before leaving for work to know the latest position of the city. ppl come late and spread rumors of unrest and leave early. No one can concentrate on work. After hearing the news for two days strike call and rumors that MQM activists are going to close all markets by Maghrib, everyone is calling home for arranging food, etc. Heard that in some areas petrol pumps have also been closed.

re: Violence in Karachi [all threads merged]

well.......nothing has changed except the fact that MQM is out of power politically.........so now they have to demonstrate their power in other ways.......

re: Violence in Karachi [all threads merged]

they are preparing for next election. :@:

re: Violence in Karachi [all threads merged]

The bullsh!t government has failed bigtime, they cannot stop violence and control the law and order situation of the biggest city in the country which also contributes the most tax revenue and gdp.
Today for the first time I've witnessed these pathetic ANP scums holding guns and firing near Orangi Kati Pahari, these guys also go up on the on top of the mountain and shoot innocents from there. Last week a video circulated in which a Pathan imam was shouting to his followers to wage jihad on Muhajirs in Pashtun language. In the video he claimed muhajirs are of jew race and need to be exterminated. And now you could see whats happening.

You non Karachiites can blame MQM all you want but only us Karachiites know who the real animal killers are. MQM has demanded gun control they had even proposed an Anti Weapons Bill. The agenda of ANP is pretty much out there, just a few days ago an ANP senior member said Karachi needs to be broken up into several pieces. By killing innocent people and spreading violence these ANP thugs are trying to break up Karachi. A city that doesn't belong to them or their ethnic group and never will. Go rule Khyber Pakhtunwa.

re: Violence in Karachi [all threads merged]

Very sad indeed.

Brings back the memories late 80s and early 90s when I was in Karachi ...... every-night we used to block the windows with wooden pallets sleeping on the floor fearing that we might get shot while sleeping from unknown bullet fired from unknown person....

re: Violence in Karachi [all threads merged]

Is the way to "demonstrate power" is to kill people from your own constituencies? Do you know Urdu speaking communities have been attacked indiscriminately? Would MQM do this?

Remove your glasses of bias, prejudice, and نسلی تعصب. Only then you would be able to see that people getting killed are from all communities. And MQM has been calling for government actions since long.
