hello ppl, im in my 17 week of prenancy, everything was going well till i got a appointment letter from the doc saying i need to do a level 2 ultrasound test. it was just that, i went for a regular ultrasound test past sat. the baby was moving around alot, the tech lady couldnt get all of the pictures of the baby, im just very worried. any ideas about the risks of this test. i been upset all day and worrying every min. please reply and pray for my baby boy.

Level 2 US is normal. I don't know if you know the gender of your baby but this is when they tell you if you want to know. They look at the development of the baby, organs, etc.
How many US have you gotten done so far?
I got my level 2 US done last Thursday. They didn't give me the news I was expecting but I am still very thankful to Allah.

i have gotten only one ultrasound because i was having problems with my health insurance. the doc said that the babys weight and height is good. but the tech who was doing the ultrasound last was a student and wasnt getting good pictures of the baby because he kept moving that morning. that was past sat then the doc sent out the level 2 ultrasound letter that same monday right after the results of the ultasound. the tech had said to me she couldnt get good pictures of the baby because of the movement. just pray that the reults of my babys ultrasound are good ameen.. im very worried... ... wat did the doc say to you when she wanted you to do the level 2 ultrasound for your baby? and sahar___ the difference is that regular ultrasound just taking ok pictures but level 2 ultrasound takes 3d pictures of the pictures which are more clear and detailed.

I think the level 2 UltraSound is normally done around 20-25 weeks. There is nothing to be worried about. The difference is that it's more detailed ultrasound conducted by a doctor instead of the technician. It is a full anatomy U/S done by a MFM (maternal fetal medicine or the periontology department at the hospital). It's more thorough and along with baby's anatomy, organs grown; they also measure the blood flow to the placenta and amnionic fluid retention.
All in all it's more comprehensive, no need to worry. It helps flag any underling issues and it more helpful and reassuring. I do not know about other places but in Canada it's common, you can even request ur OB to get you a requisition for one. Only ur OB/Gyn can give you a referral for this kind of U/S and not ur GP.
I had one at 25 weeks (where they checked baby's heart, brain and kidney functions along with anatomy scan) and am scheduled for second one at 34 weeks, but my case is a bit complicated. Normally they only do one, IF deemed necessary. It's not a set in stone thing and it not done for all pregnancies only the ones where there might have an ambiguity or in ur case where they were not able to collect complete data through a regular U/S.
My understanding is that since they were not able to get clear pictures through a regular U/S (be it coz of technician's lack of experience or fetal movements), ur OB requested a level 2 U/S to be on the safe side. My suggestion would be please do not worry unless the doc. tells u that there is some complication. Too much worry and anxiety is not good this early on pregnancy, it produces hormones which make fetus mimic ur emotions. Whenever I feel anxious I usually read Ayat-ul-Kursi.

Everyone has at least three US as far as I know. One early in the pregnancy, one after 16-17 weeks and after 34 weeks. Most women have level 2 US unless your insurance is not going to pay for it or something.
I am 23 weeks pregnant and I've already had 4 US. Like Choozy my case is a bit complicated too and I'll have 1-2 US every month from now on. This doesn't happen with everyone though.
Just pray and go get it done. Like I mention before if you don't already know your baby's gender you find out now.

Nothing to worry about. I had 3 ultrasounds [even a transvaginal one] just because they weren't able to get all the measurements in my first pregnancy. If there was anything to worry about, thet wouldn't send a letter! They'd call.

i have this ultrasound this coming week IA everything will be good in the US. i had one more question. why do the doc count the weeks of you getting pregnant from the last first period day. when u had your last period before you found youre pregnant?

That's the best they can estimate when you conceived. They can move your due date around if they want to. Also, the due date is their best guess. You don't always have the baby on the due date.
They have horomone levels in the blood report which helps them determine what week you are in and the ultra sounds help them too.

oh ight thanks.. it just seem confusing to me when the doctor say that, because i had my last seen period on july 24 but we got married aug 12 2010. i was counting after our marriage date instead. that is why, i am praying everyday inshAllah the baby is fine. im feeling fine so far in my prenancy. my 19 week just started today. ...thanks for replying

salaam everyone.. im very upset.. i went for my level 2 unltrasound...im 24 years old... i was in risk for 120 out of 1 for my baby to have DS. but they did the US on the baby now they saw a whiteish spot on his heart and some blood in his internals. but his heart is fine and hes great in height and weight. hes moving and everything. his brain, heart kidneys, and bladder everything in legs and toes and hands are fine. im just at risk for this down sydrome for the baby.i dont want to do the ammonia test for the baby cuz it has a risk of miscarriage. replys please... anyone went through this??????????

^ From what I recall, it depends on the way the fetus is developing. There are early indicators, but they ARE NOT always accurate at all.
desigirl321 -- I haven't been through this myself. Hubby and I did not plan on doing an amnio because we felt IF there was an issue, we would still be parents to this child and raise her/him. We did not feel we needed to take the risk. It wouldn't make a difference in the end. I guess you and hubby need to decide what you will get from the amnio.

im just a bit confused, im trying to thing back to my obstetrics rotation and yes downs syndrome risk increasess with age and but shes very young.
The only thing i can think they saw in a scan is the Nuchal Translucency which is done it 11-13 weeks plus 6 days. But NT only shows a potential risk to help decide whether to take things further or not. So just wondering what reasoning they gave her!
Most women given a high risk (one in 150 or less) will go on to have a baby without Down's. Even with a risk as high as one in five, your baby has four out of five chances that he does not have Down's. Nevertheless, once your pregnancy has been labelled high-risk, you will probably feel anxious and perhaps unsure of what to do.
The only way to know for certain if your baby has Down's or another chromosomal abnormality is to have a diagnostic test but this is a very difficult decision.
Book an appointment with your midwife or doctor and discuss things more and pray lots!

hey salaam guys, yes it was little high when they did the bloodwork. it was 120 in 1 for me then they sent me for a ultrasound of level 2 yesterday. they saw whitish spot on the babys heart but the doc said it could just be a spot like normal babies have them sometimes before they are born because my babys heart and everything in the heart is normal mashallah. hes good in weight and height. i did get a cold like two weeks ago . and the other whitsh spot could be blood that the baby took in when my gums got big from the pregnancy. or from the cold i had. the doc cant say if its a white mark or blood in the bowel area. she wants me to do a virus cold test to rule it out. they are the only two things she saw in the ultrasound. other then that, the babys brain heart kidney bladder and toes legs and hands and neck nose and eyes are fine.MashAllah also his weight and height is good as well as hes moving around and everything. no one in my family or my husbands family had this before MashAllah. because of these two marks in the scan made the DS chances go up from 120 in 1 to 30 in 1. im gonna do the virus cold test of blood and urnie next week to rule out one of the marks. the doc said these marks are not the major ones for DS but they are notice able. oh yah the mark on the heart could be just a spot that the baby has. she said too. im just too confused. ill love my baby boy no matter as well my husband but still InshAllah hes fine in every way. i saw him in the US he seem so cute and happy moving around. and please tell where in the quran can i find Ayat Karima ???? please if anyone else know anything at all about this topic. it would be great. i need everyones prayers. thanks sahar and inspiron for the support

with my older daughter docs saw CPCs(cysts) in her brain and i was at 1/4 risk for giving birth to baby with chromosomal defects. but same like ur baby she was very active and grew fine. we both had a test (i forgot the name)for chromosomal abnormalities and it came out fine. we refused amnio or aborting options. i used to cry a lot then. i had like 7-8 US but her growth was good in my last US her palms were open. the doc grew less worried. finally she was born healthy n fine. AH. u r at 1/120 u should hav high hopes. IA everything will be fine. read some duas.
