Re: Very essential question which needs clarification
Because it is very reasonable and right thing to do in order to show that the words are in sync with action.
( In my PM I gave you example of another Ex-Moderator showing similar racist sentiments long time ago and it was appropriately dealt with and her posts were removed when I pointed out, hope its not the same person.....)
The thread was ruined by CB jumping in to it with bad attitude and consistently supported her views.
I pointed out the obvious problem of one team member showing hateful sentiments against people of one country at large (happens to be Pakistanis) and two other team members liking it. That makes at least three team members offending Pakistanis.
Besides no open apology has been offered for the offense from CB. Right there is the essence of the problem.
I am waiting for Teggy Bhai to return after he gathers sufficient information as he promised.
I am quoting your post for reference sake, to keep relevance to the original topic at-hand.
What I am going to say applies in general.
Having read through the thread in question, your objections here, and what Huma has already said. I have to say that we should take a step back.
Lets consider the fact that the thread was opened for a specific issue facing Pakistani society, and Pakistanis at-large. I am of the belief that because the thread brought about the commentary it did, has proven its' purpose, which is to highlight the fracture that exists between Pakistanis of different geographic locations though their claim to the homeland may be in unisome. Having said that, it would be more appropriate to keep the dialogue open and serve to work on solutions to bring about ways to bridge this gap that has come to forefront. It's obvious it exists; otherwise this thread would not have been started.
I do realize the structure of what was said by the team member has been seen to be offensive to some members, and that acknowledgement already exists in my early response, and it has been authenticated by Huma. This in itself speaks in terms of actions taken that the raised objection is not being ignored, or hushed. Rather the Administrative Team appreciates the feedback, acknowledges it, and vowes to work with team members so that we may not see a repeat of this again.
I would also again like to reiterate what I stated previously, Gupshup's core beliefs are those of the Pakistani society, and its' overall membership body. The guidelines that are in place, have been put in place by the feedback of members. This process is in works every moment that we log onto Gupshup. So there is absolutely no question about a conflict of Gupshup's core values, its' Team Members, and/or its members. Though Members are in a position to alter the values because the policies are generally based on members' input. This is member empowerment in action. The team is there to facilitate and ensure that each of the team members serves the members honorably, and adheres to the guidelines in place.
Also, to demand a specific action is akin to asking for revision of the system in one-go. You can understand how that would be counterproductive, and contribute to disorder within the Team. The members are afforded several bypasses before meeting any administrative action, that is, after deliberate violation of the policies sometimes. It is therefore, fair to coach team members when their remarks/contribution may slacken once in a while, because they're valueable not only as team members but as also members of Gupshup. Often, after a member leaves the team, they remain as a contributor and member of Gupshup's family at-large. Team members will be afforded the same opportunity as members. Though, more is expected of the team members. And a vigilant system remains in place that has been successful in addressing internal team issues.
So please extend your cooperation. Continue to report any posts that you deem irresponsible, or offensive, and the Administrative Team promises to improve from that and ensure that we minimize any remarks that would be offensive to others. It is a motto that we strive to fulfill each time any of the team members logs in in their Moderator/Channel Manager/Administrative capacity. There is room for improvement, and we will continue to improve.
Let us be cool minded, and not rush to rash decisions. If there's anything else that should need to be addressed, please post again. Otherwise, let us move forward having learned from this, and lets not let the spirit of discussion die over disagreements. An objection is an opportunity to learn more about the other person's perspective.
Again, the Administrative Team thanks you (all) for participating and voicing your concerns so passionately, we take that personally. And pledge to ensure that this disappointment has been heard, noted, and steps will be taken to ensure that the team members take all possible steps to get their point across in a manner that does not offend our valued members.
One last thing, and it has been mentioned before; however, I feel the need to state it again. Let there be no doubt that remarks made were not deliberate, or with the intent to cause trouble and/or malice towards fellow Pakistanis. A similar claim has never been made against the team member before, that I can recall. It is therefore very likely that the message could have been delivered in a more likeable manner, and there is room for misunderstanding of the core of the comments made. This is an area that needs improvement on all sides. We should work to take all steps necessary to listen to each other, and understand the other person's point of view, and the one who is addressing others should take all measures to ensure that the purpose is to contribute with the sense of helping to improve rather than cause hurt.
There will be coaching in place within the team in light of this unfortunate incident to ensure that it is not repeated again. This objection will not be disregarded. I assure you of that.
