A surprisingly good outcome I think, and the best that could be expected under the circumstances. The judges voted 2:1 to split ownership.
The Muslim judge and one Hindu judge both rules that a temple existed there before the masjid, and as a result the site should be split. The other Hindu judge ruled that all of the land should be awarded to Hindus.
While this should theoretically be a good opportunity for reconciliation, it remains to be seen how the Hindu extreme right will react to a mosque existing right next to their temple at an important site in their religion. The Muslim group that is the claimant in the case has also already indicated that while they are only partially disappointed by the verdict, they will appeal to the Supreme Court.
I think that further appealing the case is not a wise move. They risk losing even the one-third this verdict had awarded to Muslims, not to mention the risk of communal violence and more Muslim deaths if the appeal results in the whole site being awarded to Muslims.
Already, looking at the 1000+comments on the Hindustan Times article posted within 30 minutes fo the verdict, there are already many posts by Hindus expression anger at the fact that the verdict did not award to whole site to Hindus… that attitude is the core that could lead to more violence against Muslims.
Re: Verdict. Babri site to be split, Hindus to get 2/3, Muslims to get 1/3
If Muslims can tolerate the call to prayer by Hindus using bells and Hindus can tolerate Muslim Azan next to their temple then there should be no issue.
Extremist from both sides will never be satisfied no matter what the verdict.
If Muslims do not appeal against the decision who is stopping the Hindu extremists to appeal the decision.
Given the human weaknesses this issue will remain there for a very long period of time , till people realize that there are other things which can be basis of love for someone other than their religion.

Here is the official link to the verdict from the High court. You can download the pdf. http://rjbm.nic.in/
To me the court mostly ruled in favor of Hindus. I think whole majority of Hindus will be happy with the verdict.

It's good to know that people's mentality has been changed and they believe in peace more. Charon taraf aman kayam rahe bas yahi dua hai khuda se.Amen. :)
Re: Verdict. Babri site to be split, Hindus to get 2/3, Muslims to get 1/3
If you look at any online news story, you will find that Indian hate brigade has suddenly become active and started spitting venom against their own Muslim population.
Some of them try to compare this situation with the mosque issue in new York. Indians never miss an opportunity

Whatever the historic "facts" may be, it is appeasement of fanatics who destoryed a historic site in the 1990's in spite of the court's promise to secure the site. Will this become a trend? Simply claim that any old mosque is on "sacred ground", and use that as an excuse to destroy it?
In all honesty, I would prefer if the site was razed and forbidden to be a holy site for anyone.
I do think the courts were affriad of any other outcome, and all said and done this is perhaps best for Muslims as at least they (hopefully) won't be slaughtered en mass.
But how pathetic is it, that Pakistanis can look across the border and inspite of the state of their own nation, can honestly and heartfully be thankful for the partition.

The question before the court was , whether there was a temple before and if so are Hindus allowed to pray there. The ruling had nothing to do with erasing of the mosque. That is criminal offense and not part of the case here.
I do not understand why you have to keep justifying the creation of Pakistan. This only makes me think that Pakistanis still doubt that the creation of Pakistan was a good idea.
Re: Verdict. Babri site to be split, Hindus to get 2/3, Muslims to get 1/3
This kind of verdict and matured response from nation is expected. There are three main reasons for this.
1) India is moved on. The new generation give a damn whether it is a temple or mosque and who built it or who demolish it? The genX exactly knows where their goal is. If India wants to be a developed country by 2020, there is no place for nonsense like this.
2) securlarism and independant judiciary: Verdict has given by learned judges who consider the case from all angles. ASI carried out investigation and report is based on strong evidence which are open for all parties to see and understand.

Re: Verdict. Babri site to be split, Hindus to get 2/3, Muslims to get 1/3
I thank Allah a thousand thousand times.
Indeed my dreams came true…
Arlietter bhai can vouch for me on this one, i had hopedand dreamed of a simmilar verdict.
Since Muslims are aproximately outnumbered by Hindus around two thirds more… the verdict is not only wise it is also very reprasentative of both communities needs and furthermore it comes across as very fair to me.
That said it’s regretable that it took so long and so much devestation but i am given a lantern glow of hope in a world of almost perpetual darkness.
Like others have said the extremists on both sides will make much of it, howver as a practicing Orthodox Muslim i am delighted by the courts verdict for it seems to be most fair indeed.
I salute the Judiciary and the judicial system of India particulalry those few wise men and women who helped formulate such a compromise, truly Machiaveli would be proud.
Furthermore i must thank the Decision makers as well as point out that politicians and other rabble rousers must look to this as a symbol of hope for future co-existance between our peoples.
At the end i must just add a little message for Arlie bhai…

This makes little sense to me. The verdict rewards those who destroyed the mosque with a disproportionate share of the land it once stood upon, and yet you suggest there is still this idea that bringing down the mosque was criminal in the first place? How could we even arrive at this kind of verdict, or even find any need to dive into ancient history, if it is recognized that the destruction of the mosque was not legal?

Justifying? Indeed, many of us question if the existence of Pakistan was a good idea. You see, I'm not so dead set against India that I cannot forsee the possibility that a unitied Indian subcont. would have been good. Verdicts like these convince that it wouldn't have worked.

This is more like a political verdict than a legal one. While many will hope that this results in peace, i think its far from it. In the end i feel it will be better for muslims to get a land for mosque away from this place than right adjacent to one that will be managed by teh extremist elements of hindus liek RSS or VHP.
