Ahead of tomorrow’s first VB Series final against Sri Lanka at the Adelaide Oval, Ricky Ponting says Sanath Jayasuriya and Co. can expect a barrage of short-pitched deliveries from Brett Lee.
“We’ll use some changes of pace through the innings and Sanath can expect some short stuff as well. It’s important we start the game off well, they’re a very good front-running side and when they get started they can be hard to peg back with bat and ball so we’ve got to start really well,” Ponting told AFP. “You can’t afford to give him width, (Kumar) Sangakkara is similar as well in that they’re very strong square of the wicket. And Adelaide Oval, the way it is, you’ve got to look to bowl pretty straight.”
Jayasuriya hit 114 off 96 deliveries in Sri Lanka’s earlier win over Australia, but Ponting remained confident of restraining him. “Looking at the way they’ve played their cricket, the toss is going to be pretty important because they’ll want to bat first.”
Tom Moody, Sri Lanka’s coach, is, however, unperturbed. “I know teams in the past have targeted that area (with short balls) with Sanath and there’s times he may have felt uncomfortable and others when he’s got runs very quickly,” Moody said. “So if that’s the plan, that’s the plan they’ll go with and with short boundaries square of the wicket, we’ll see who comes off best.”
Moody also said that Glenn McGrath’s absence - the fast bowler is with his wife as she undergoes further cancer treatment – would be missed. “Certainly (losing) someone with the experience Glenn has, there’s going to be a lot of responsibility on who partners Brett (Lee), and who follows the opening attack,” he added.

Australia will play the same side that beat South Africa by 57 runs last Sunday in the first final against Sri Lanka at Adelaide on Friday. Ricky Ponting confirmed the squad at his pre-match press conference today and he will marshall a pace attack including Brett Lee, Stuart Clarke, Nathan Bracken and the Supersub James Hopes.
There is no room for the fast bowlers Brett Dorey or Mick Lewis, who has replaced Glenn McGrath as he spends time with his cancer-hit wife Jane. Adelaide will host its debut finals fixture as the MCG is prepared for the Commonwealth Games, but the match was still not a sell-out on Wednesday.
“It’s a great opportunity for South Australians to get behind this match, the first final we’ve ever had in Adelaide,” James Sutherland said in The Age. “I know that the SACA are very keen to make a success of it to prove that the Adelaide Oval is a venue worthy of more international cricket.”
Australia 1 Adam Gilchrist (wk), 2 Simon Katich, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Damien Martyn, 5 Andrew Symonds, 6 Michael Clarke, 7 Michael Hussey, 8 Brad Hogg, 9 Brett Lee, 10 Stuart Clark, 11 Nathan Bracken, James Hopes (Supersub).

Michael Hussey expects some stiff competition from Sri Lanka ahead of the best-of-three VB Series finals starting on Friday, and he believes the slow pitches in Adelaide and Sydney should suit their type of bowling.
“It’s going to be a really tough game against the Sri Lankans, particularly here [Adelaide] where the conditions suit them,” he told AFP. “We had a good win against Sri Lanka here, but it certainly does suit them a bit better than pitches like the Gabba.”
South Africa needed to defeat Sri Lanka at Hobart to secure a place in the finals, but they were knocked out after a dramatic batting collapse. “So [Sri Lanka are] probably playing the better cricket at this point,” he said. “They’ve played the most consistent cricket, so I think that’s good for cricket to get the best teams in this series playing in the finals.”
Hussey said the South Africans needed to recharge their batteries before hosting Australia later this month. “It’s been a long tour having Tests and one-dayers so I’m sure they’re pretty weary and looking forward to getting home and getting into their own beds,” he said.
The second VB Series final is at the SCG on Sunday and the third final, if required, is scheduled for the Gabba on Tuesday.
