VB Series/Changes for VB series Announced (Merged)

Lee included in Australia A squad

December 21, 2004

Brett Lee has been included in the 13-man Australia A squad which will take on West Indies and Pakistan in warm-up games. The A side will play one-day games against West Indies at Hobart on January 8 and 9, while they will take on Pakistan in a one-dayer at Adelaide on January 12, and then in a Twenty20 game at the same venue the next day.

Lee has been a permanent 12th man in the Australian Test side, thanks to Michael Kasprowicz’s consistent performances, but these matches will ensure that Lee gets some practice ahead of the VB Series.

However, Trevor Hohns, the chairman of selectors, indicated that Lee might be rested from these games if he played in either the second of third Test against Pakistan. “We are mindful of the lack of opportunity Brett has had this summer, so we feel that these games should give him some useful match practice,” Hohns said. “We will review his place in the A-squad if he takes part in the Melbourne or Sydney Test matches, given he then would have had some bowling under his belt, but in his best interests we want to have some game-time organised for him if the Test line-up remains the same.”

West Indies tour of Australia in jeopardy

Cricinfo staff

December 21, 2004

West Indies’ tour of Australia suffered another jolt with the players’ demanding US$500,000 as appearance fees and the board subsequently rejecting that demand. The West Indies Players’ Association wanted the money for the 14-member team in addition to match fees, tour fees and incentives, according to Chetram Singh, a board official.

According to an Associated Press report, Singh, who was also the president of the Guyana Cricket Board, said that the demand “puts the tour in jeopardy.” Singh also termed it as “absolute madness” hours after the players’ representative, Dinanath Ramnarine, lay it in front of the board. The players were paid a total of US$390,000 in appearance fees for 2004, which included four Tests and seven one-dayers against England before two Tests and five one-dayers against Bangladesh.

West Indies’ tour of Australia was almost called off last month as most of the senior players, including Brian Lara, stayed away from a training camp because of a conflict over personal endorsements. The players felt that they risked losing their image rights because of their contracts with Cable & Wireless, the rival company of Digicel, the board’s new sponsor.

The board barred the players from the camp but both parties soon agreed, after mediation, to resume the camp on November 29 and allow an arbitrator to sort out the issue.

yeah Michael Kasprowicz has been consistently producing - it's tough for Lee - it's not the first time Cricket Australia has gone with a young talent - the same scenerio had in the past between Harvey and Bichel --- Hogg and Warne..

i don't like this idea of including Australia 'A' side in the event - if not West Indies bring some one else. - it's already tough for Pak to face the national Australian side - and it would be wierd to see Australia taking on Australia 'A' in the VB series final.. would be no fun..

^ England would be a good option but they are busy spanking Saffies

i have a bad feelin abt our chances this whole tour!

Whatever happens in the tests, I expect a good performance in ODI series. Inclusion of Afridi and Malik brings variety and aggression to an otherwise lethargic and laid back lineup.

^ same here. Don't forget A Razzaq's power in ODIs.

Lara leads squad of 14 for VB Series

Cricinfo staff

December 25, 2004

The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) have announced a squad of 14 to participate in the VB Series which takes place in Australia in January. The squad will leave for Australia on 29 December, and is captained by Brian Lara. It will also mark the first assignment for Bennett King, the West Indies’ new coach.

The WICB said, however, that there were a number of issues still unresolved and it had agreed to the terms and conditions outlined for the tour on the basis that some of them were applicable only for this VB triangular series. This, the board said, had also been done in the spirit of compromise urged by the CARICOM Prime Ministerial sub-Committee on Cricket.

The Board was also encouraged by the fact that its major sponsor, Digicel, had accepted a warranty clause, inserted in the contract for the VB Series as a short-term measure, in the interest of sending the best team on tour. This clause is intended to ensure that, during this tour, there will be no actions taken to damage the interests of the sponsor.

In this context, Teddy Griffith, the board president, wrote to the chairman of the Prime Ministerial sub-committee on cricket, Keith Mitchell, the Prime Minister of Grenada, urging him to follow up on his stated commitment to discuss with Cable and Wireless, the implications coming out of the warranty included in the players’ contracts for the Australia tour.

Mitchell said that, in his discussions with Cable and Wireless, he had been assured that the company accepted that the West Indies Cricket Board had sole copyright of West Indies Cricket and anything pertinent thereto. He had been further assured that Cable and Wireless would do nothing in the future to display any advertisement, both in the electronic and print form, to give the impression that any relationship between itself and any of the players (both individually and collectively) was in their capacity as members of the West Indies Cricket team.

Team Brian Lara (capt), Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Christopher Gayle, Wavell Hinds, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Marlon Samuels, Dwayne Bravo, Ryan Hinds, Courtney Browne, Ian Bradshaw, Pedro Collins, Mervyn Dillon, Reon King, Xavier Marshall.

changes for VB series

just saw this on geo, azhar mehmood, hafeez, taufiq and rao are in the squad while farhat, sami, danish, asif and khalil are going back home... razzaq and inzi are also fit for the one dayers... i'm really glad to see azhar back in but i think he'll just be a backup for razzaq but i hope they don't drop him after this series thats what they always do to the poor guy... i dont know how hafeez got a recall i remember after he was dropped inzi said he would probably never play for pakistan again

Re: changes for VB series

hafeez back
inzi had no right to say that hafeez’s career was finished

Re: changes for VB series

moin or rashid still missing

Re: changes for VB series

These changes make sense. I think Azhar should be preferred over Razzaq. He (Azhar) will be more enthusiastic on getting a chance and may perform with some spirit.... something that is seriously lacking in Razzaq. Besides, this will also be an eye opener for Razzaq that he is not an automatic selection and need to perform to justify his spot.

Anybody can make a comeback based on recent performance and I guess Hafeez did pretty decently in domestic cricket. Inzi was probably mad at Hafeez's performance back then but still it was politically incorrect for him to have made such a statement. Personally I think Arshad Khan is a more useful bowler than Hafeez but maybe he is not that much of a batsman.

Re: changes for VB series

The Reason Hafeez made a comeback is the possible unavailability of Malik to bowl andthu the inclusion of an off spinning all-rounder. Hope he does well.

Re: VB Series/Changes for VB series Announced (Merged)

I think Hafeez has done well in domestic cricket, it was really stupid of Inzamam to say he would never play for Pakistan again.
