Just want your thoughts on whether you celebrate this holiday and your reasoning behind it.
My husband and I have never really celebrated it, although there has been the odd year here and there where he got me a small gift such as flowers or something but 95% of the time, we don’t celebrate it.
My husband feels it is just a consumer holiday made to get people to spend money on stuff they can give their significant other any other day of the year.
Although I am a hopeless romantic and secretly wish he was more romantic too, I wholeheartedly agree with his reasoning behind not wanting to celebrate Valentines Day. Why have one day dedicated to declaring your love for that special person, you should do it everyday. In addition, I feel as Muslims it is probably haram to celebrate V-day as well.
Re: Valentine's Day - Do you celebrate it? Why or why not?
Okay, number one.. i dont think its haram!
number two, i haven't celebrated it with anyone yet but i look forward to celebrate it one day.
People come up with the reasoning that love is there all year round then why just the valentines day? But my reason to choose to think thats its fine, is because dedicating one day to just 'celebrate' your love and companionship does no harm. Telling your special someone that how much they mean to you on a specific date doesn't make it haram.
Re: Valentine's Day - Do you celebrate it? Why or why not?
I don't think it's haram either, but I do think it is unecessary. 1 day a year to do something special for your spouse, it's just so contrived. You should appreciate your spouse every single day of the year.
Re: Valentine’s Day - Do you celebrate it? Why or why not?
I have been against prescribed stuff, expectations and made up stuff. why valentines day, why heart shaped crap, jewelry, dining, bears, chocolate.
why not celebrate your love on aril 15th instead with a nice hike.
and if valentines day was not enough, we also have sweetest day.
although I must say valentines day during uni days was a big thing, chicas just dinn wanna be alone, and thats where public sevants like yours truly stepped up :halo: I should get a medal or something
Re: Valentine's Day - Do you celebrate it? Why or why not?
1) Yes, SO and I usually go out to dinner. Last year he bought me a pair of shoes I really wanted for Valentines (we went shopping a few weeks before Valentine's and when I saw the shoes, he told me he'd buy them as Valentine's gift). This is so far I know we're going out for dinner for sure. We're going on vacation next week so probably no big gift. But we don't do anything "big gifts", flowers or anything else. Usually mainly dinner.
2) I don't see it as a big deal. I have enough worries to deal with in my life.....I don't have the time to sit down and "analyze" whethre or not I should "celebrate" Valentine's. Although SO and I regularly do "date nites", Valentine's is just another excuse to do it.
3) As far as your husband thinking this is a "consumer holiday" and that's why he's won't celebrate it....I'm sorry but I think that's just his excuse for not wanting to do anything for it. He can send you a FREE e-card for Valentine's day....he can cook dinner for you and surprise you with a bubble bath....he can pack sandwiches and take you for a picnic....there are MANY free or super-cheap ways to "celebrate" Valentine's.
Re: Valentine’s Day - Do you celebrate it? Why or why not?
Well every day is a special day for me and my Wife…
Why should one day be more special than another…?
Every day is a valentines day, call me old fashioned but I always think of her and every lunchtime I go window shopping and at least bring back something no matter how small or great.
I am always looking for something for her and me to enjoy… Be it clothes, flowers, decorations, jewellry just about anything that stands out.
Afterall who else can I treat like that?
To me every day is a valentines day and sure we argue sometimes but thankfully it’s nothing like the typical arguments people have and we are both very childish really, she always tries to get something or make something for me and I for her…
When your in love every day is a Valentines day…so while I dont exactly get the red roses and other Valentines paraphernailia out on February the 14th I still technically celebrate it every single day.
Re: Valentine's Day - Do you celebrate it? Why or why not?
i think Valentines day is great if your with a partner, only a scrooge type character would not buy or do something special on Valantines day if its celebrated by everyone else. Dont you feel left out? Everyone else got something nice, maybe got a meal cooked by thier partner, or a card, or flowers.
if your husband says its all commercialism then let him do something special for you instead. Its the thought that counts not spending money.
Valentines day is every day but Valentines day is THE Valentines day.
Re: Valentine's Day - Do you celebrate it? Why or why not?
Never celebrated coz :
1- dont have a valentine :-P
2- the day and the thought behind it doesnt attract me at all. If i have someone special, i really wont wait for some day to express my love for him. If i love him, i love him always, every single day.
