Re: Valentine's Day - Do you celebrate it? Why or why not?
For all those trying to bash my husband and saying that he is just trying to save money, please think before you speak. My husband FULLY supports me financially and buys me nice gifts whenever he wants on many other ocassions. He is NOT cheap or a scrooge by ANY means. He just does not beleive in V-day and rightly so. If ANY of you cared to do a bit of research you would find that it IS in fact HARAM. It has pagan origins and was named after a Christian martyr Saint Valentine.
I am VERY liberal in my thinking and am by no means a fanatic, but even I have enough sense to realize that holidays like Valentine's Day and Halloween have pagan and christian origins and therefore should not be celebrated.
I think more and more Muslims celebrate it just because "its the thing to do" and everyone else is doing it and they don't want to be "left out."
You can celebrate your love EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR...it doesn't have to come once a year on V-day!
Re: Valentine's Day - Do you celebrate it? Why or why not?
LOL...thanks, I wasn't talking about you. Just the ones that are saying my hubby is a scrooge or trying to cheap out on me. My hubby has spent a fortune on me...MUCH more than his means. All you need to do is look at my finger. :)
Re: Valentine's Day - Do you celebrate it? Why or why not?
I think lots of people have a completely wrong concept of valentine's day, Especially in Pakistan.
Last year when i got orders on my site for valentine's day, lots of people start calling early morning, even before office hours asking if their gifts were delivered, they were so emotional that some people even start crying on phone saying i ruined their valentine by sending their gifts late, It's was 2pm only! and i kept explaining that i have to wait for the fresh flowers to arrive which arrive after 12, cause i don;t want to ruin your valentine by delivering yesterday's sookhey flowers!!
Man it was so hard dealing with customers. And today is valentine again and imagine what i am going through :D
However, roughly a few orders on Mother's day and Father's day :(
I buy flowers for my mom on Valentine's day. She is my Valentine every year.
Re: Valentine's Day - Do you celebrate it? Why or why not?
We dont make a huge fuss about it. Its just like any other day for us. We dont love it, we dont hate it although we do enjoy together if there is some good program on TV (talk show about it, may be special drama, concert etc)
Waking up every morning and realizing that I am alive and she is with me, my parents are doing well back home and praying for me and my kids are sleeping peacefully in next room makes everyday special for me.
Back in College/University off course it was something different ;)
Re: Valentine's Day - Do you celebrate it? Why or why not?
we never do anything special for valentine's day but do make sure to go out for dinner.. My husband really isn't the romantic type so for him a dinner followed by movie or a coffee is enough. We don't usually give gifts to each other because my birthday is a few days before valentine's day so he gets me one big gift each year. This year I got him a card with red flower that has milk choclate in it. Just a small thing that lets him know i still love him :)
Re: Valentine's Day - Do you celebrate it? Why or why not?
Just want your thoughts on whether you celebrate this holiday and your reasoning behind it.
My husband and I have never really celebrated it, although there has been the odd year here and there where he got me a small gift such as flowers or something but 95% of the time, we don't celebrate it.
My husband feels it is just a consumer holiday made to get people to spend money on stuff they can give their significant other any other day of the year.
Although I am a hopeless romantic and secretly wish he was more romantic too, I wholeheartedly agree with his reasoning behind not wanting to celebrate Valentines Day. Why have one day dedicated to declaring your love for that special person, you should do it everyday. In addition, I feel as Muslims it is probably haram to celebrate V-day as well.
Your thoughts?
We don't celebrate it. It's never been anything out of the ordinary for us.
Re: Valentine's Day - Do you celebrate it? Why or why not?
this year my daughter will be 2 years old MA.. so I was able to get some printable templates for valentine cards and we cut some shapes (all sorts) and glued them and made a card for both grandma's. Then we made paper envelopes (pink) and stuck a pink rose on each of them. Tonight i am going to take her and let her give them each their homemade card and a rose :)..
