Useless Degree

How can any degree be useless? whether it be fashion or history or english, why do people think that u cannot benefit from these subjects? why the hell do we think that being a doctor engineer are only subjects worth studying?argh!

I have two degrees in English. When I first talked about pursuing English, my parents freaked out. They couldn't believe I would pursue something so useless. They thought I didn't understand the difference between career and hobby.

Now they've totally changed their tune. I've even heard them telling people how important humanities/liberal arts degrees can be. I think it's a matter of seeing all the different opportunities that exist for those types of degrees and also understanding that a degree is not simply a piece of paper that leads you to a job, pursuing a degree enhances the way you think and see the world.

You too Sahar? My goodness.Well when I applied for the English programs all my friends thought I was nuts. They all kept saying how useless and 'easy' it was. I was quite disappointed that they couldnt see what an English degree actually was.

Eventually though they got around to seeing things my way. Most of my friends are into science or math degrees.Back then I thought perhaps I was also making some sort of mistake. But right now I feel I made the right choice by going towards an English degree.

My parents were quite agreeable now- but at first they thought it might be better for me to study math.

^ lol I only got away with it because I was also Pre-Med. I fulfilled those requirements cuz I liked all the Chem and Bio classes, but I had no interest in being a doctor.

Really? I took only one bichem course. One was enough for me.Although it was rather interesting I had no interest in pursuing a career of that type.

I have found that a lot of employers find my degree to be useless, not including the multitude of aunties and uncles that feel the same way. A common question I get at interviews, "so have you had much luck with that degree?", or "what can you do with that degree?" sigh

Part of the going to a dedicated science, engineering and medicine university like I did is that you get deeply ingrained with the belief that a degree that is NOT in science, engineering, or medicine is not worth the paper it’s written on

Well… I had that feeling whilst I was studying, anyway. Now, as a working professional, I generally hold that any degree is of real benefit because it proves that you have that certain level of intellect required to be a manager.

I’m still very suspicious of the liberal arts though :snooty:

You should be.

We are smarter than you :stuck_out_tongue:

Munni – Why did you edit? I think that that degree could be useful, but in a more general sense about the world, and perhaps not toward any specific field – except maybe law?

Take this job and shove it! No no.. Take this degree and shove it. I have 3 masters degrees. I really dont need them, only professional experience matters. These are standards set by the business druids. Anything else is considered "boffo".

^ agree...

a degree without experience is useless... sadly

Munni since you already have that degree -can't you use that to maybe do a minor in something related to that. I would think it could become quite useful when combined with another degree that is maybe more narrowed down.

And you cant exactly get much experience without a degree.

It is not which degree but from where.

True. I had a comment to that effect in my original post and then edited to remove it, thought unfair allegations about being elitist and snobbish may have resulted :D

Regarding experience -- Definitely agree with that to some extent. I learned a lot more from my student-teaching than I did from my education classes. As for my study of literature and writing, definitely enhanced from teaching, but I needed those courses to give me solid basis for my ideas.

But as MQ says, you can't get much experience without the degree.

Regarding Matsui's comment -- I definitely think that a lot of the opportunities I got were because of where I went to high school, college, and grad school. People made assumptions about my qualifications, intelligence, and quality of education. Luckily they were right :D

Madsci, it would also have been unoriginal. Much like your signature :snooty:

you dont sound like you went to Oxford.:stuck_out_tongue:

thank god MQ. I also didn;t go to Chico State which is a little better than Oxford.

Lot of hangovers? :p

It's not just parents or aunties, I recently got the rudest comment from guppy friend regarding people studying accounting, the person themselves is studying medicine. A lot of desi med students turn out to be pompous jerks and lets not even get started on their parents who think they become MD's as well.

^ not all :) some med people are clueless about other things.. and they're so lovely when u teach them how to add a "header" in word haha

IT sux…
I,m even ready to flush it down the toilet. :nook:
