USB encryption and password manager

What are some of the recommendations in USB encryption and password management. Preferrably AES 256 bit encryption. Basically I’m looking for:

[ol]
[li]USB encryption software -[ul][/li][li]requirements are that it must be capable of mounting USB drive as a separate disk/volume on my computer.[/li][li]Must be portable and executable via USB itself. In other words, I shouldn’t be required to have admin rights on the computer I’m using USB on, neither should I have to install the app on the computer I’m using to be able to launch USB. It should be self-containing on USB itself.[/ul][/li][li]The second type of software I’m looking for is the password manager. So far roboform2go looks best but I’m wondering if there are other better options (I don’t like its GUI when in login/identities etc editting mode). This software should be portable and self-containing on USB and I shouldn’t have to install/configure anything on computer before using it.[/ol]Basically I want to have my most valuable data available on USB that I carry but still secured so that it’s not visible to others in case it’s lost or if someone is snooping around.[/li]
The softwares can be free or commercial.. doesn’t matter but they must be portable/self-cotaining on USB without any installation on computer/lapttop. Thanks.

Re: USB encryption and password manager

For password storage I use eWallet by Ilium Software (http://www.iliumsoft.com/). Even though it only does 128 bit RC4 encryption I use it because it has versions for Windows and Windows Mobile, so my file is sync-d.

Re: USB encryption and password manager

That's different type of software though..I'm looking for something specific that can be used for USB drive + can be launched from it as well.

Re: USB encryption and password manager

Try these ***U3 ***devices… but only 128 bit encryption:

I use the: SanDisk Cruzer® Micro 4GB (Black)

Re: USB encryption and password manager

see if truecrypt helps.
truecrypt.org ; u can run that off USB

Re: USB encryption and password manager

^^ I'm sure it would, specially with the hidden volume built in.

Re: USB encryption and password manager

truecrypt doesn't work off usb. that's the problem. otherwise it's a great option. it's a 'traveller' mode but even for that you've to first get some kind boot program 'burtPE'. that's kinda long winded. I wish they had a program like portableApps that you just plug in and launches and you can mount your drive by typing the password.

actually an additional good feature could be to lock down the drive after say 3, 5 failed attempts (user configurable) add really unbreakable layer of security (what are the chances someone is going to 'guess' or break your password in say 3 or 5 attempts?).

there does seem to be something like this be sandisk called cruzer professional but it seem like an enterprise/business product not commercial. I couldn't find it on any retailers' websites.

Re: USB encryption and password manager

You can actually get thumb drives with finger-print authentication, which prevents unauthorized access to files on the drive.

Re: USB encryption and password manager

yeh, these look good..however i already have a 4gb usb so this is might be something to look at in a year or so when the technology is matured/becomes mainstream and bigger storage size with cheaper prices.

Re: USB encryption and password manager

so after much search and trying out i ended up buying roboform2go. i think it's the best option available out there right now. it's portable and secure, has a good search capability to search through your data etc.

the gui could be improved though but it's not too bad right now. does your job adequately.

for future enhancements they should consider including a vault feature where you can "store' your files by drag and drop and they're encrypted and you can take them with you on your usb. I know there are other stand alone vault programms out there but since you're already using roboform it'd be nice to have everything in one place/program.
