yeah a measly 2 million, my point as that I dont trust these machines and while I have nothing to hide atleast from the authorities (parents are a whole diff story) I am troubled with the prospect of errors and limitations of the systems getting me in trouble. As you know in such cases you are treated as guilty until proven innocent..atleast in the media and on the street. and even if teh charges are dropped rumblings remain that 'maybe' they just dinn have enough to pin anything on ya but that you are mixed up in the wrong business.

But hey I have been a huge fan of Chertoff when he decided to kill an entire company and affect livelihoods of tens of tousands of people, only to protect some big shots, and looks like he got rewarded for it. Seeing him in is post is similar to seeing 'brownie' as the head of FEMA. Just not qualified.

Aren't arrest records in America permanent, meaning they are never expunged even if charges are dropped?

Its easy for me, I live in England, I only have to say "sadly, I'll just decide never to go until this law changes"-thats sadly become a position forced on me and many brits as per the BBC forums.

BUT, American citizens should resist this action-for your future.

Jack Abramoff scandal exposed the Republican party's corruption at every tier of the US govt. People did demonstrate their indignance with their votes. So, there is outcry. Unfortunately, people here are afraid of the moose-limbs and forgeigners and will support any violations of civil liberties (albeit long term negative effects) to protect thier families and themselves.

I think we would. Our PM sits in parliament as is the traditin in Parliamentary systems. Our representatives have a Q/A weekly, broadcast live on BBC2.

I think travel industry in the US may be a better bet to protest against these kind of non-welcoming procedures. Civil liberties groups are usually told to take a hike.

The survey showed that the United States was ranked “the worst” in terms of visas and immigration procedures by twice the percentage of travellers as the next destination regarded as unfriendly – the Middle East and the Asian subcontinent.

More than half of the travelers surveyed said U.S. immigration officials were rude and two-thirds said they feared they would be detained on arriving in the United States for a simple mistake in their paperwork or for saying the wrong thing to an immigration official.

The survey was taken between Oct. 25 and Nov. 9 against the backdrop of growing concern in parts of the U.S. business community over a steady decline in the number of foreigners visiting the United States.

Travel Industry Association statistics show that the U.S. share in world tourism declined from 7.4 percent in 2000 to 6 percent last year. A one-percentage point increase, according to the association, would mean 7.5 million additional arrivals, $12.3 billion in additional spending, 150,000 additional U.S. jobs, $3.3 billion in additional payroll and $2.1. billion in additional taxes.

^ Ironically, the above survey was primarily focused on the gora traveller from European countries, who are deemed to have more sympathy towards US, and also arguably face far less problems in getting visas or entry into the US. They have not even begun the analyze the anti-muslim, anti-middleeast and anti-south asia (perceived) bias experienced by many.
