Re: US to fingerprint all visitors.

I was refering to the new development as alluded to by this article:

The first link, whilst dated is relevant. I’m sorry if US based guppies dislike it, but this is crazy, bordering on the obscene. No sane nation would undertake such actions. I travelled to Western Europe after 9/11, and they were gentlmenly at immigration etc.

This bully tactic is only going to (a) turn people away from visiting the US and (b) further build anti US feeling as people react to an unjust criminalization of themselves based on race/colour/heritage.

Liberty, the civil rights group, have justifiably expressed there outrage.

Re: US to fingerprint all visitors.

Good one :)

Re: US to fingerprint all visitors.

Really? People seem to be still coming to the US ports and putting up with the indignities of the customs and immigrations.

How are other customs' procedures at emerging economic giants like China, India?

Re: US to fingerprint all visitors.

India and China (certaintly) dont claim to be a beacon of fair play and justice for all.

Surely you agree that to criminalize the average Brit is wrong, its just wrong. This nation (wrongly) stands by America at every turn, yet we get paid back like this?

Re: US to fingerprint all visitors.

Customs procedures in India are quite easy but you will note most of these guys don't know how to smile. Eventhough the number of foreign/overseas travellers are increasing exponentially, customs clearance at any airport in India currently remains a bottleneck although all of these airports are in the process of ramp up for better facilities..it will be some more time when things would improve. But anybody coming from Pakistan might get under scanner. We have several cases of missing Pakistanis in india...no jokes...press states that.

Re: US to fingerprint all visitors.

I am not disagreeing with you at all. I think criminilizing Muslim US citizens at the US-Canada border posts, or any domestic airports is unfair and counter productive just like criminalizing visitors to the country.

My contention is that people, especially non-muslim US citizens, say two things:

  • for the safety of my family, I'll support "criminilization" of any US muslim citizen or visitor.

  • if America is so bad, why do people keep coming to our doorsteps?

Re: US to fingerprint all visitors.

Why is it? when the Americans are asking you for all these clearances you lot are making all this hue and cry, but if you were in Pakistan you would have bent over backwards to accept e every wrong idea by the Pakistani authority and then say its ok!

Are you all being racist towards the Caucasians…..
Bad very bad :nono:

Re: US to fingerprint all visitors.

Then it must be true. I take it "rediff" reported it. ha!

Re: US to fingerprint all visitors.

Nonsense, I regard any infringement on the rights of a man to feel at ease until there is reason to criminalize him as wrong, be it in pak or the US. The difference is that the US was founded on principles of equality, justice, liberty, as espoused by your founding fathers, it is not living up to its own ideals.

Re: US to fingerprint all visitors.

I will be back I am going to get cigarettes its 1:30 at night.

Re: US to fingerprint all visitors.

I think Quaid e azam was much more liberal…and had the same principals…I dont know why we are not living up to our standards…

PS: I will be back in 15 minutes.

Re: US to fingerprint all visitors.

No one has said America is bad, I have always maintained that the founding principles of America are great, in the true sense of the word. I majored in US history and have great admiration for the political ideas of the FF, esp Jefferson and James Madison, who first espoused representative govt as we’d recognize it in any western sense.

BUT, my quam is with what the US is doing now. People put up with it, I’d imagine for simple economic reasons, they can make money in the US. Most immigrants I’d wager come from Latin America, or the developing world further afield, and have little alternative.

Such actions as taking credit details, prints, ID’s…these are the basis on which police states are formed. This is a slide into gestapo territory, and it threatens to happen in what was (past tense deliberate) a beacon of hope in terms of meritocratic and democratic governance.

What would James Madison say?

Re: US to fingerprint all visitors.

True.

Re: US to fingerprint all visitors.

Lux, this is not a random anti US rant, I am not prone to those. As mentioned previously, I majored in US History, I have a good knowledge of the political traditions of the US, of its Foreign Policy, of its wars, of its engagement with the outside world. This angers me for 2 reasons:

(1) It criminalizes a massive group of innocent people. Alien to any tradition of fair play.

(2) That this can happen in a nation founded to avoid top-down tyrannical laws which infringed there rights. This is alien to your traditions, you too should be alarmed.

Re: US to fingerprint all visitors.

^

googly miaN,

I am alarmed but I am in a minority. The questions I wrote in my post #28 is what you hear from Americans when you ttalk to them about this. And, these are not back water hicks who say such things; they are educated people.

Re: US to fingerprint all visitors.

yeah a measly 2 million, my point as that I dont trust these machines and while I have nothing to hide atleast from the authorities (parents are a whole diff story) I am troubled with the prospect of errors and limitations of the systems getting me in trouble. As you know in such cases you are treated as guilty until proven innocent..atleast in the media and on the street. and even if teh charges are dropped rumblings remain that ‘maybe’ they just dinn have enough to pin anything on ya but that you are mixed up in the wrong business.

But hey I have been a huge fan of Chertoff when he decided to kill an entire company and affect livelihoods of tens of tousands of people, only to protect some big shots, and looks like he got rewarded for it. Seeing him in is post is similar to seeing ‘brownie’ as the head of FEMA. Just not qualified.
