US involved in secret talks with senior Taliban

Looks like Uncle Sam is thinking of exit strategy which is good. Pakistani officials should also start talking with TTP before it is too late.

DAWN.COM | Pakistan | US involved in secret talks with senior Taliban

ISLAMABAD: The Obama administration may be close to reversing course on its current strategy in Afghanistan, after DawnNews quoted sources as saying that high-level talks with senior Taliban militants are currently underway.

The indirect talks involve officials from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Britain, and top Afghan Taliban leadership, including the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen Chief and Abdullah Anus, among others.

Sources told DawnNews that Anus is the son in law of Abdullah Azzam, a noted terrorist and former mentor of Osama bin Laden, who was killed along with his sons in Peshawar in 1989.

In addition, Abu Al Hasan Madani, one of the key leaders of Rabta-e-Alam-e-Islami, has also been engaged in the process, as has Abu Jud Mehmood Samrai, an Iraqi who also holds Pakistan nationality and who played a very important role in the Afghan war.

The first round of talks have concluded, and a second, face-to-face meeting is likely after Eid.— DawnNews

US has been hinting at 'talks' long time ago, they just wanted 'Taliban minus Mulla Omar', then they started separating 'good Taliban' and 'bad Taliban'... its anybody's guess who is good and who is bad ;)

[/QUOTE]

for the given scenario
theres only ttp mehsud group who may require some amount of talks (to hand over suicide attack planners) otherwise no other talks are required.
of course the broader group known as terik e taliban pakistan is not at war with pakistan and only calls itself so to show solidarity with the afghan taliban. most afghan pashtuns and others are calling themselves taliban for the same reason.

pakistan-ttpm talks are required if obama chooses to escalate in afghanistan in the coming days, but we'll be back at this US exit juncture in a years time if not in 6 months

time to get a pak army general to sing about how they've been double crossing the US in afghanistan

Re: US involved in secret talks with senior Taliban

^^

What other choices Pakistan Think tanks had?

Total submission, when Kabul fall to US-led and Indian Supported Northen Alliance?

or

Create an alliance with China/Russia or be part of it and let the toppled Taliban take care of Americans ( Indians will disappear from the Afghan Horizon once US is gone), which they did and now America have forgotten about everything else and all western media talks about is how to get out of this mess called Afghanistan..

Pakistan took the second option... and now obama for the second time in less than a year is giving new Afghan policy or i may say an exit strategy...

The Main points of which would be

Pakistan Army have defeated Talibans,

The Bad Talibans are now history the talib leadership is visionary and ready to talk

Karzai is corrupt leader hence he is biggest reason (ever) for Anti-American sentiments in Afghanistan

All Goals and objectives has been achieved and now it is about time to lay out timetable for an exit of over 100 thousand troops from Afghanistan...

Some one should initiate talking with Mehsuds so that suicide nonesense should stop immediately. Once Americans are out from Afghanistan, most probably Taliban of Omar will take over. Taliban attitude would be different at this time because of disconnection with Pak army since 2001 and Indians may continue in Afghanistan. However Karazai and co may go home.

Re: US involved in secret talks with senior Taliban

USA & UK can cut loose/give-up and leave Afghanistan whenever they want, because it won't make a tiny bit of difference to their societies. It doesn't matter to them if Taliban ruin (already ruined) Afghanistan or build it again. what impact North Korea or Cuba or even USSR had on their societies? On the contrary, giving up to PTT will have a huge impact on Pakistani society. Question is, do we want TRUE enforcement of Islamic rules or of a twisted PTT version of Islamic laws, if later then sure we should have talks with PTT.
They are merely looking after for their national interests, we should also learn to protect our national interests.

Talibans are not a threat to their national security, there can be an argument that they MAY economically bleed out USA & UK like USSR, but it's very far-fetched. TTP, on the other hand, is a threat to Pakistan's security, both ideologically & economically.

^^^^^

Once dialogue with Uncle Sam is successful, Taliban will be a part of Afghanistan government supported by Uncle Sam. This scenario is quite scary when army is fighting with Taliban now. Once again army has to turn around 180 degrees which is not good. Before this happens, talking form this side should also start.

Re: US involved in secret talks with senior Taliban

^ It doesn't matter as long as they have no influence in Pakistani militant elements. Root out these foreign elements and their presence in Afghanistan won't make a tiny bit of impact on Pakistan. We have our mortal enemy on eastern borders and had Russia on western boarders for 12 years, did they pose any threat to Pakistan's existence in the way these TTP goons do? NO, because they had no INFLUENCE in Pakistani society.
We must root out them, talking with them will open a door to increase TTP's influence on western borders, which will lead to far worse situation Pakistan.
Irony is our "leaders" are not sincere with country, otherwise these developments can turn the tables for Pakistan.

So SA is playing role in this negtiation.

DAWN.COM | World | US confirms Saudi role in talks with Taliban

WASHINGTON: US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke has confirmed that Saudi Arabia has initiated a dialogue with the Taliban and that the United States would support any Saudi initiative.

Remember, Taliban in Afghanistan have no connection with TTP, so from that perspective Pakistan should be okay.

Canadain PM Stephen Harper said about a year ago, following are his words, verbatim..

“We cannot win in Afghanistan, PEROID”

So you say that Afghanis and their Jihadi-supporters HAVE learned from the history? And only the non-Afghanis need to learn?

Additionally thanks to their good knowledge of HISTORY, these Afghanis are avoiding all the pitfalls and mistakes of the past?

p.s. Somebody deleted a detailed response to the HISTORY lessons. So here is the shorter version.

Perhaps a good crash course in comprehension & angreji would be of great help. BTW there is tons of material on US and its “tail between the legs” startegy or what they say in your world the great “exit strategy” A strategy that is usually devised after success but not in this case, Does Vietnam/NoKo rings the bell?

May be you should take a crash course in HISTORY too along with other two mentioned above to understand in what context “Those who do not learn from histroy are doomed to repeat it” is quoted when they talk about Afganistan.

Here try this, it may help, there is plenty more where that came from just ask.

P.S: I do not blame the mods to delete your rebuttal which I am sure as usual was nothing more then noise and waste of bandwidth.

OK.

So Afghanis HAVE learned from their history?

May be the world is missing that part of YOUR HISTORY. hahaha.

See, I told ya, you have a severe comprehension problem.. May be the mods did what they did was also wrong.. LMAO.... Stop wasting bandwidth with your gibberish...

So you don't know if the Afghanis have learned a lesson.

Correct?

Here is brief description for ya!

Back in 1985-86 Russians for the first time in their war against Muj, deployed their elite troops including air-cavalry.

I am not sure if you are familiar with the therm "air Cavalry". May be your HISTORY have angels and daemons instead.

Afghanistan was a graveyard of Empires. That's true.

But it was a graveyard for the Empires only until the Empires used HORSE cavalry.

Now my friend the same Afghanistan is the graveyard of primitive Afghan tribals and their Pakistani-lackeys.

Had you read your history, you would have know that with the advent of mechanized infantry, HORSES were sent to pasture. And then in the fateful years of 1960s, for the first time ever in HUMAM HISTORY, large scale assaults by air cavalry were made possible because of helicopters used by the US army.

Soon every MODERN army adapted and refined their methods.

One of those armies was from Russia.

And if you knew the history of the world (and not the history of madrassahs), you would have known that Russians were able to wipe out the Muj from major battlegrounds in Awghanistan within 9 months.

Had it not been the weapons and money and training from the USA and West, all those Muj would be speaking Ruskie lingo.

If you knew the real history, Air cavalry can only be stopped by using air-to-ground missiles and air-to-air combat.

Afghans used the stingers and blow pipes to fend off the Commies but poor Awaghans and their jihadi supporters in Pakistan forgot about it.

And guess what, without those stingers, these Muj are running like cockroaches, from every corner of mountainous terrain.

How else do you think Pak army has routed the brave Waziris from their hideouts?

Answer: With the air-assault.

And that my friend is the history that you do not know, or perhaps cannot even comprehend.

Burqa, advise for you get out of burqa ASAP, lack of oxygen is bad for brain cells if you do have such a thing. What yanks couldn’t do in 8 years Russkies did in 9 months.. :rotfl:

BTW: How old are you?

OK MO mian.

No answer to the HISTORY, so you are now jumping into the cesspool of personal insults.

Shabash.

Respect Bruqa, and keep the memory of Mullah Ghazi alive for ever ever ever.
