US funds terror groups to sow chaos in Iran

US funds terror groups to sow chaos in Iran
By William Lowther in Washington DC and Colin Freeman, Sunday Telegraph

America is secretly funding militant ethnic separatist groups in Iran in an attempt to pile pressure on the Islamic regime to give up its nuclear programme.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s regime is accused of repressing minority rights and culture
In a move that reflects Washington’s growing concern with the failure of diplomatic initiatives, CIA officials are understood to be helping opposition militias among the numerous ethnic minority groups clustered in Iran’s border regions.

The operations are controversial because they involve dealing with movements that resort to terrorist methods in pursuit of their grievances against the Iranian regime.

In the past year there has been a wave of unrest in ethnic minority border areas of Iran, with bombing and assassination campaigns against soldiers and government officials.

Such incidents have been carried out by the Kurds in the west, the Azeris in the north-west, the Ahwazi Arabs in the south-west, and the Baluchis in the south-east. Non-Persians make up nearly 40 per cent of Iran’s 69 million population, with around 16 million Azeris, seven million Kurds, five million Ahwazis and one million Baluchis. Most Baluchis live over the border in Pakistan.

Funding for their separatist causes comes directly from the CIA’s classified budget but is now “no great secret”, according to one former high-ranking CIA official in Washington who spoke anonymously to The Sunday Telegraph.

His claims were backed by Fred Burton, a former US state department counter-terrorism agent, who said: “The latest attacks inside Iran fall in line with US efforts to supply and train Iran’s ethnic minorities to destabilise the Iranian regime.”

Although Washington officially denies involvement in such activity, Teheran has long claimed to detect the hand of both America and Britain in attacks by guerrilla groups on its internal security forces. Last Monday, Iran publicly hanged a man, Nasrollah Shanbe Zehi, for his involvement in a bomb attack that killed 11 Revolutionary Guards in the city of Zahedan in Sistan-Baluchistan. An unnamed local official told the semi-official Fars news agency that weapons used in the attack were British and US-made.

Yesterday, Iranian forces also claimed to have killed 17 rebels described as “mercenary elements” in clashes near the Turkish border, which is a stronghold of the Pejak, a Kurdish militant party linked to Turkey’s outlawed PKK Kurdistan Workers’ Party.

John Pike, the head of the influential Global Security think tank in Washington, said: “The activities of the ethnic groups have hotted up over the last two years and it would be a scandal if that was not at least in part the result of CIA activity.”

Such a policy is fraught with risk, however. Many of the groups share little common cause with Washington other than their opposition to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, whose regime they accuse of stepping up repression of minority rights and culture.

The Baluchistan-based Brigade of God group, which last year kidnapped and killed eight Iranian soldiers, is a volatile Sunni organisation that many fear could easily turn against Washington after taking its money.

A row has also broken out in Washington over whether to “unleash” the military wing of the Mujahedeen-e Khalq (MEK), an Iraq-based Iranian opposition group with a long and bloody history of armed opposition to the Iranian regime.

The group is currently listed by the US state department as terrorist organisation, but Mr Pike said: “A faction in the Defence Department wants to unleash them. They could never overthrow the current Iranian regime but they might cause a lot of damage.”

At present, none of the opposition groups are much more than irritants to Teheran, but US analysts believe that they could become emboldened if the regime was attacked by America or Israel. Such a prospect began to look more likely last week, as the UN Security Council deadline passed for Iran to stop its uranium enrichment programme, and a second American aircraft carrier joined the build up of US naval power off Iran’s southern coastal waters.

The US has also moved six heavy bombers from a British base on the Pacific island of Diego Garcia to the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, which could allow them to carry out strikes on Iran without seeking permission from Downing Street.

While Tony Blair reiterated last week that Britain still wanted a diplomatic solution to the crisis, US Vice-President Dick Cheney yesterday insisted that military force was a real possibility.

“It would be a serious mistake if a nation like Iran were to become a nuclear power,” Mr Cheney warned during a visit to Australia. “All options are still on the table.”

The five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany will meet in London tomorrow to discuss further punitive measures against Iran. Sanctions barring the transfer of nuclear technology and know-how were imposed in December. Additional penalties might include a travel ban on senior Iranian officials and restrictions on non-nuclear business.

Comment:

Does this surprise any of us to know that " Terrorism " is a phrase used by America to justify attacks and boycotts of its enemies, and when it serves their interests they would forge alliances with the devil himself.

Those people who are working for an alternative system to the Capitalist one are now being seen as the new enemy with American politicians making references to the Caliphate as being the new evil empire.

....looks like just a newspaper "matetrial"...
CIA have learnt a hard lesson from their past mistakes in soviet era Afghanistan..

Also if Americans will do this in Iran..Irani government can pay them back heavily in Iraq, where American troops are surviving on the mercy of suicide bombers!

Re: US funds terror groups to sow chaos in Iran

Americans this time will ensure that they apply new tactics. Their strategy in Afghanistan and Iraq has failed miserably. I guess these fellows will go for surgical attacks. Good intellingence or bad intelligence...doesn't matter. They need an excuse..and excuse is Nukes and CNN/BBC will do necessary story telling.

They attacked Iraq because of WMD's which were never found but subsequesntly excuse became war on terror, absence of democracy and war crimes. As if these fellows are all doodh ka dhula.

Re: US funds terror groups to sow chaos in Iran

if it happens, it will be aerial attacks and missile lobbing. No one has the apetite to get in a ground war, especially with a purpose to actually hold land.

Re: US funds terror groups to sow chaos in Iran

^ ^ ^
Nope !
attacking Iran aerial or land is not as easy as Iraq....I can see from here the air-base of US in Al-Udied and it is within Iran's striking range just across the Gulf...
America is further more vulnerable as US Navy fifth command is based in Bahrain with Aircraft carriers, again Bahrain is within striking distance of Iran!

Look at the geography here, If Saudi Arabia allows US to use it's bases for strike against Iran, take it for granted, Iran will retaliate by destroying Saudi Oil fields..costs for these on economy worldwide is beyond our calculations!

Further Iranian Revolutionary Guard and it's Navy will control Strait of Homruz..so virtually NO Oil can pass from here..whole world will have to suffer because of this..

Last but Not least..Iran supported Hezbollah will open another front against Israel NOT to mention Hamas and Islamic Jihad of Palestine may announce another "Intifada" or "Uprising" at the same time...this will virtually make Iran a Hero among Muslim nations!
Iran can also attack Israel (read america) since it has ballistic missiles of 2000Km range.

All I mean to say is that it's not like Iran is invinsible and US can't do it...But look this case...it's totally different than Iraq...stakes will be very high both politically and militarily as Iran has some considerable "Capability".....any strike will make Iran a "martyr" and Saudi as "American" traitor...

Considering above US can't achieve it's objective of destroying only "Nuclear facilities" without much escalation

Re: US funds terror groups to sow chaos in Iran

But they can use Arabian sea for launching attacks, like they did way back in 2001 for attacks on torra borra ?.
What stops them from using Afghanistan as a launch base ?

Re: US funds terror groups to sow chaos in Iran

^ ^ ^

yes! as I said Iran is not invinsible and US can easily destroy Iranian Nuclear facilities...BUT the previous mentioned vulnerabilities are still there and Iran has warned any attack on it and it will retaliate by striking at American interests anywhere in Gulf...it's Complicated and definately NOT like Afghanistan or Iraq.

Let's hope America and Israel can start learning how to co-exist with nuclear Iran like India and Pakistan have learnt.

Re: US funds terror groups to sow chaos in Iran

The firepower now assembled in the Arabian Sea will allow the U.S. to operate a 24 hour non-stop ariel offensive against Iran for an excess of 30 days.

Re: US funds terror groups to sow chaos in Iran

^ ^ ^
and Iran too....this time US may suffer "considerable" damage across it's various bases in Gulf..although at the end it will destroy Iranian facilities.

Re: US funds terror groups to sow chaos in Iran

matrubhoomi i agree with your assessment, and that is why I said the only thing possible if at all would be an aerial campaign.

I dont think any administration can be stupid enough to start another war while the one in Iraq, Afghanistan etc are going so horribly wrong

Re: US funds terror groups to sow chaos in Iran

^
How well the Patriot system and Arrow Weapons System perform could prove vital.

Re: US funds terror groups to sow chaos in Iran

but would anyone be ready for the potential consequences. If our govt wants to do something this time, I hope they think it thru first

Re: US funds terror groups to sow chaos in Iran

Hahahahah

First, the Iranian "Navy" would last around 30 minutes, then would exist soley on the bottom of the gulf.

Second, the Iranian economy is heavily dependant on oil imports. Despite the fact that Iran has huge reserves of oil, it has only about 50% of the refining capacity it needs for it's internal use. An attack on anybody elses oil refineries would guarantee that iran would ahve no oil imports and it's economy would collapse.

Third, as mentioned above, Iran has limited oil refining capability. They have nine refineries, three of which are large and critical. Any attack on Saudi or Bahrain, or UAE, or Kuwait would guarantee the destruction of those refineries, and the Iranian economy would collapse for decades. Have we mentioned that Arabs do not like, nor do they trust Persians?

Fourth, any attempt to block the Strait of Hormuz would flip the whole world against Iran, including Europe, China and India.

Fifth, Irans military is largely Russian, and some Chinese and has 1960's capabilities at best. The military was largely US until the fall of the Shah in 1979. With no spare parts, all of the modern pieces essntially became worthless. So anything that Iran has, has essentially been rebuilt from scratch starting in 1980. As there have been fairly effective sanctions in place, the Iranian bluster is there most effective weapon. The Iranians might get in a lucky shot or two, but they would last less than a week before the vast majority of their capability was destroyed by air power.

Sixth, Iran suffers badly from West-envy. Getting slapped back into place would collapse the moral of the Iranian people. While in public statements they would blame the US and the West, in private they would blame the Mullahs.

Seventh, the US endorsing a separate Kurdistan would be lots of fun for the Iranians. (and the Turks).

They will continue to with bluster so long as that is effective, but they will back down quickly, as they have no natural allies other than Syria, Hezbullah and the Palestinians. None of these entities would care for a minute about Iran without Irans oil wealth. Iran is in a small little box and despite the fact they are making a lot of noise, the walls are closing in....

Re: US funds terror groups to sow chaos in Iran

OG but surely it is not liek taking candy from a baby, otherwise W would have launched something already to give ppl something to cheer about now that the Iraq and afghanistan adventure is not unfolding the way it was sold.

Re: US funds terror groups to sow chaos in Iran

I think Afghanistan is OK, and Iraq is a mess, so W would need a damn fine excuse to do something.

But the US is not looking to hold ground in Iran. Virtually all of the fighting would be done by the Navy and the Air Force. Oddly enough a few units that were bound for Iraq were diverted to Afghanistan. Theoretically they are fighting the Taliban, but if they end up on the Iranian border, the could be used for rescue missions.

I think Bush may figure that his legacy is already cast, and that the least he can do is to do all of the fighting on his watch, rather than leave open problems for the next president. It looks like North Korea thing might get negociated, which only leaves Iran as the last remaining Axis of Evil member unresolved. Bush may want to deal with them all before he leaves office.

Re: US funds terror groups to sow chaos in Iran

^ Will be good if he can deal with one of them, isn't the bloody nose you got in Afghanistan and Iraq enough. The aerial strategy has already been tried by your friend Israel in Lebanon last year and you can see the utter failure of that policy. Go ahead be glutton for punishment yet again.

Re: US funds terror groups to sow chaos in Iran

iraq would be a huuuuuuge mess if and when iran wants it to be, and unlike now, the violence will be directed at the cloisters of american presence. the influence iran has over iraq is religious and not political, therefore it cant be stopped by say toppling key leadership figures. iran will retaliate by broadening its ground operations because they know they cant match america's aerial/navy prowess. there is nothing america can do right now aside from making noise and hoping that iraq fixes itself magically before iran gets the nukes.

its going to stay a stalemate.

Re: US funds terror groups to sow chaos in Iran

could you please tell that to kharzai of faghanistan as well so he stops his whining.

btw did you hear the latest, they want to pardon all the warlords. nice..what a move

Re: US funds terror groups to sow chaos in Iran

They want to pardon Nasrallah and Moqtada al-Sadr?

Re: US funds terror groups to sow chaos in Iran

oh no, not those morons, but the morons of the afghan variety, the warlords that had tore the country to shreds. They are now buddy budy with kharzai govt and incidentally some of them are former taleban supporters.

I dont see why these gusy would nto be tried for human right violations for what they did during the period they were destroying everything.
