Washington: US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta said on Saturday it would be impossible for US to pay $5,000 for each Nato truck, given the economic challenges his country was facing.“Considering the financial challenges that we’re facing, that’s not likely,” he said during an interview ahead of the crucial Chicago summit.US was paying $250 a truck on average before the blockade of Nato supply from Pakistan after Salala check post incident, a senior US official said, adding US was hopeful the issued would be resolved in the summit.Thousands of trucks a day carrying supplies would go through multiple border crossings from Pakistan to Afghanistan, making the fees a potentially massive source of revenue for Pakistan.The U.S. has shifted deliveries to different routes through Russia and other countries to Afghanistan’s north after the blockade from Pakistan.

We started it wrong, once again. The question of duty of logistics should have been the last item on the agenda. Apology over Salala and drone should have been sitting on top of our priority list. They are willing to pay from $1500 to $1800 for each truck that crosses from Pakistan, but that too with Pakistan providing security to US and Nato convoys. Now calculate how much we will have to spend on the security cover for the Nato traffic and when trucks are torched, how much will be detucted from these peanuts of $1500 to $1800?

The reason the Americans give to Pakistan for not increasing the rates for NATO good transit is that they are giving CSF to them which is not given to the countries in the Northern Distribution Network. However there's no link as such between CSF and NATO charges, as the former was to pay for Pakistan's services to the American "WOT". None of the countries from the NDN are fighting for Americans. While CSF can be used to better equip the army to fight the war, the NATO charges can be used to improve the destroyed infrastructure. Anyways it seems the deal would be on American terms.

There’s no if and buts, Pakistan will have to open the supplies and that too on American terms. Apology, Drone attacks, price of transiting the supplies will be decided by the Americans, since beggars cant be choosers.

any idea how many trucks pass each year? 1000, 5000?
I think about 6-700 containers (using calculations from 365 million dollars/year if the Americans pay USD 1500-1800/container) pass per day. About 250,000 containers per year, no wonder why the infrastructure of the country has been destroyed by the supplies.

If you look at the REASON why the supply routes were cut off, and negotiations on money now, you'd realize how sick the minds of those in charge in Pakistan.

Looks like at the end of the day, It will be Pakistan who will apologize to the US over Salala and will waive the $250-fee on Nato trucks, accompanied by free security services for the traffic.

The border crossing dispute is stuck over how much the US will pay Pakistan to allow trucks to transit its territory. Before the airstrike, the US paid about $250 per truck. Now, two US officials said, Pakistan wants $5,000 a truck and an apology for the deaths in the airstrike. The Obama administration has said it was willing to pay as much as $500 per vehicle and has expressed condolences and regret, but no apology.

Well in that case Mr. Panetta, you should pack you bags and leave the country because invasion and that is thousands of mile away from your country require money to be spent... if you are bankrupt or cannot afford to pay such amount, then don't ask us to provide you free services... we are not running any charity here!!!

Because this time Pakistan Railway/NLC will deliver the stuff.
Its a win-win situation for both, not a bad deal though. 1 million bucks a day for railway, it will help over come the loses because of that ....... bilour !
