US bombs Pakistani border patrol

US forces in Afghanistan bombed a Pakistani border patrol after they were shot at by a Pakistani soldier, the US military has revealed

A statement said that a B-52 dropped a bomb near the border town of Shkin after a Pakistani guard opened fire and wounded an American soldier.

He started shooting after being asked to return to his side of the border.

US forces regularly patrol the area looking for suspected al-Qaeda or Taleban forces.

Sensitive border

The US soldier who was injured has been transferred to a military hospital in Germany.

His condition is not serious.

It was not clear why the Pakistani soldier had opened fire in the incident, which took place on Sunday.

The area was the scene of a gunbattle last week in which an American soldier died after US forces came under attack while on night patrol.

He was the first American to be killed in Afghanistan on active duty for seven months.

The attackers are reported to have fled across the border into Pakistan.

Pakistan has pledged to clamp down on the movement of suspected al-Qaeda and Taleban members across the border in order to help the US war on terror.

Another, somewhat clearer account of the incident

http://www.dawn.com/2002/12/31/nat25.htm

SOUTH WAZIRISTAN, Dec 30: A group of the US-led allied forces and members of the South Waziristan Scouts, posted at the Angor Adah checkpoint, exchanged fire on Monday. No casualty was reported.

According to reports reaching here, an official of the scouts spotted two missiles abandoned across the border in Afghanistan and informed the allied forces. A group of the allied forces arrived at the place to destroy the missiles and contacted the scouts to identify the spot where the missiles were lying.

When some scouts crossed over the border, shooting started which was returned. However, no one was hurt.

Both sides were accusing each other of the incident.

Later, the commandant of the scout force, Mohammad Seed Khan, arrived at the checkpoint and controlled the situation. The scouts closed the adjoining road for vehicular traffic as well as passers-by. The telephone link to the town remained disconnected till evening.

According to another report, US planes bombed a religious school in the Pakistani area but no one was inside the building.

One more report

2 border guards killed by US fire

By Hayatullah Khan

MIR ALI: Two Pakistani border guards were killed when American and allied forces opened fire at a Pakistani check-post at the Pak-Afghan border near Paktika province of Afghanistan.

On Sunday, unidentified terrorists opened fire at an America checkpost at Birmal near the Pak-Afghan border inside Afghanistan, killing two American troops. In retaliation, they targeted a Pakistani checkpost killing two scouts. Later, the American troops chased the assailants, killing one of them inside Afghan territory.

2 bombs from US aircraft fall in Pakistani area: Residents in Birmal said Monday that bombs apparently dropped by US planes fell near an abandoned religious school and a police checkpoint in Pakistani territory, but no injuries were reported. One bomb hit a perimeter wall at an abandoned madrassa in the village of Birmal, local resident Allah Noor Khan said, AP reported.

More hats off to Musharraf for allowing them carry out such assaults in Pakistan. Eventhough I dont care what they did to the Americans, they should not be allowed to make attacks on Pakistani soldiers.

Yes,

Dawn, a clear proof. Thanks Mad Scientist.

Private news Agency are pathetic.

Thats sad. They should appreciate our assistance in there war of terror. Pakistanis should now be more vigilent and prepared to defend themselves eye for eye.

Second most trusted source of Pakistan.

It has got to be confusion among US and Pakistan soldier with Al-Qaieda fugitives.

This is the place where these fugitives can hide easily.

Situation tense after Pak, US troops clash

PESHAWAR: The situation remained tense at Angoor Adda (Pak-Afghan border near Paktika province) on Tuesday following clashes between Pakistan’s paramilitary troops and US soldiers a day earlier.

Reliable sources from Angoor Adda told The News that following the Monday incident, Pakistan deployed its regular army to assist its already deployed paramilitary forces, Waziristan Scouts, to safeguard the border.

In the wee hours on Tuesday, unidentified attackers from inside Afghanistan again fired 12 rockets on Angoor Adda.

The sources said a week ago, unknown assailants started firing on the US troops when they were on routine mobile duty at the nearby Paktika province.

The US troops in retaliation killed Said Muhammad, a resident of Wana, headquarters South Waziristan Agency. The body was later brought to his hometown for burial.

A large number of people after attending funeral of Said Muhammad staged demonstrations against the US troops. On Monday the US troops came under fire from unknown assailants at the Pak-Afghan border. The US troops asked Pakistan’s paramilitary troops to hand over the accused.

The sources said that officials of the paramilitary forces told the US troops that they have no knowledge about whereabouts of attackers.

This enraged the US troops who tried to cross the Pak-Afghan border forcibly, which was strongly resisted by the Waziristan Scouts.

According to unconfirmed reports, heavy firing took place between the two sides resulting in the killing of seven US troops and injuring of one soldier from Waziristan Scouts.

The sources said Wana officials rushed to the area and avoided bloodshed.

Following the exchange of fire, the US gunship helicopters targeted a double-storey madressa-cum-mosque owned by Maulana Muhammad Hassan, former Taliban official and close relative of Said Muhammad.

The US forces dropped three missiles on the madressa. Two fell on the madressa destroying its walls and rooms while one fell on the nearby ground, the sources said.

No casualty was reported as the Maulana has already vacated the madressa.

Till the filing of this report, officials of both sides were said to be in a meeting on the border to normalize the situation.

Reuters adds: An American soldier wounded in Afghanistan at the weekend was shot in an exchange of gunfire with a Pakistani border patrol, prompting the US to drop a bomb on the border area, the US army said on Tuesday.

The American was part of a unit conducting a routine mission with Pakistani forces along the Afghan border when a disagreement appeared to break out, according to a statement released by the US military at their Afghan headquarters at Bagram air base.

“A Pakistani border scout opened fire with a G3 rifle after the US patrol asked him to return to the Pakistan side of the border,” the statement said.

“That individual and several others retreated to a nearby structure,” it added.

“Close air support was requested and one 500-lb bomb was dropped on the target area.”

The US military said the incident happened near the Afghan village of Shkin, which lies on the border with Pakistan.

“We are working with the Pakistanis for an accurate battlefield damage assessment from the incident,” it said.

The US statement did not give details of the joint US and Pakistani mission or say whether it was taking place inside Pakistan or Afghanistan. US forces patrolling eastern Afghanistan for al-Qaeda fugitives say they cooperate with Pakistani forces on the other side of the border, but do not cross into Pakistani territory to pursue fugitives. The US statement also did not say what the Pakistani border guard was doing inside Afghanistan. The wounded soldier was flown to Germany for medical treatment and is in stable condition, the US military said.

It is very difficult to understand the facts but I trust the news from dawn. I think there are elements in Pakistan trying to engage in "Jehad" with US from this side of border. But bombing was unfortunate incident. I hope Pakistan military also conduct their investigations to find out the real facts about this inccident.

it is natural when one of the us army men were fired at they are going to
fire back regardless where it comes from . they are not not diplomats
or politicians.

I think the US military presence must be removed from Pakistan immediately. Are we a soveriegn nation or stooges of the US, Saudi Arabia and the like? They shoot at our men and we take it sitting down? I really hope that the MMA and the NWFP start a movement to remove the US presence. Enough is enough..I support the President but he's playing with fire, as the Waziristan Scouts are all from Waziristan Agency.

Raj,

Agree with you yaar but remember these Waziristan Souts are causing problems for Pakistan. Remember, our 18 soldiers got shaheed because of them. The place Al-Qaieda fugitives are hiding is a tribe location where Pakistanis, Pakistani Soldiers can't go but they can easy go whereever they want in Pakistan.

Hope that's clear to you.

On one side its Al-Qaida and Taliban and on other side its US army. A soveriegn nation means not outside army then when should we allow Al-Qaida and Taliban to roame free in Pakistan?? same rules apply to all. Either have them all or none in Pakistan.

Right..We are still losing credibility in FATA. Do you know the system there? We (Pakistani govt) BUYS the loyalty of the Maliks aka Tribal leaders. The average person there not only sees their malik as corrupt but also the Pakistani gov't for letting the system be perpetuated. Adding the US to this mix adds fuel to the fire. There is no doubt that their loyalty to talibans is absolute but we risk permenantly alienating them from us, if we continue in this manner. I don't want to see Pakistanis getting involved in someone elses mess. Remember PT, we're only a fair weather friend and stormy clouds approach...

To be honest, I've no idea what the FATA is about. I'm glad you've raised these points. I only know that Pakistanis aren't allow to go to FATA. That's it. It's a disturbing area and a place where smuggling could be done easily on free-hands.

Raj,

Take a deep note right here, Pakistanis/Pakistanis Soldiers aren't allow to go to FATA. And it is very easy for Fugitives to go do Terrorist Activities either in Afghanistan or Pakistan and take a refugee in FATA. I know adding US wouldn't solve the mess but to say you don't wanna see Pakistanis getting involved in someone's else issues is untrue. Our people always tend to involve in other's issue. Lack of Education should be blame.

Look at the facts guys;

(1) The US border patrol was patrolling the area.

(2) They found this guard (whatever) in the Afgan area and they told him to go to his side of border.

(3) Guard open fire on US soldier, injuring one soldier.

(4) The gaurds took shelter in a building. (may be a Maddresah).

(5) US patrol ask B-52 to bomb the building.

(6) Building damaged, No casulties.

(7) The area was in Waziristan. A FATA area where Pakistan government do not have full control.

Now the questions should be asked;

(1) What should be response of US solders when they were attacked? kill or to be killed?

(2) Did any Pakistani died in this inccident?

(3) Should a Pakistan government be blamed for this inccident?

(4)From BBC - The provincial assembly approved a unanimous motion on Wednesday condemning the bombing as a violation of airspace and sovereignty.

If the area was in FATA how come this has violated the Pakistan's sovereignty (remmber we do not have full control) and plus the fact it was started from Pakistani side.

(5) Adding to the US hate compaing the MMA launch demo against US action and War against Iraq. Some extracts from these as well

"If the US attacks Iraq there will be open war here. No American will be safe here - Maulana Samiul Haq"

In Peshawar, several thousand people took to the streets chanting ''Down with America'' and "Long Live Saddam Hussein."

So we support Saddam Hussain and his oppersive regeime but not Irqi people? we are also forgeting that same Saddam has wage war against Iran, Kawait and Kurds.

Whatever is the result, one thing is sure, MMA and Taliban supporters will gain from this situation. More Pakistanis are died in Afghanistan in "Jehad" led by our mullahs then in the hands of US soldiers.
