Urgh facial hair!

Okay so most of you will want to shoot me when I tell you this, but for the last 3 to 4 years ive been shaving my facial hair. I used to have really prominent growth which made me feel so manly, I think my brother was taking the pee out of me one day and I just completely flipped. I shaved my upper lips, neck and the side of my face. Needles to say it grew back, and the quickest and easiest way to get rid of it was to shave, again. I’m married now and I feel totally ridiculous shaving, I’ve managed to hide it from my hubby but I dread the day he sees me so I wanna stop. But how?! The growth is really bad (down to medical problem, on meds but not working as well as I’d hoped) and the hair grows back really coarse and thick within 2 days. I tried to let it grow but it was realllyyy noticeable so I shaved it again. Any advice? I’m thinking of getting laser treatments done but I dont have the time to make such a commitment yet (my work schedule is non stop, moving from town to town) so helpppp? Pleaseeee!

Re: Urgh facial hair!

waxing may be a good option but good facial wax would need to be used
one problem with waxing is that u need to let the hair grow back and if they are too thick u prob dont want that plus i dont know how large of an area you're shaving

so best option is get threading done from a good esthetician and that you can do once a week easily and u can use a hair minimizing lotion for the face and it works when u take the hair out by roots so either waxing or threading + hair minimizing lotion would help to make your hair come back finer + good sunscreen to protect your face

Re: Urgh facial hair!

laser all the way!

Re: Urgh facial hair!

first of all stop shaving, in the meantime while you search for an alternative (waxing, threading, etc..), use this and apply a hair minimizing lotion for the face (like surreal mentioned above)

Re: Urgh facial hair!

the only problem with laser would be you would have to grow your hair out which will not look attractive

thats why i suggested threading and the hair minimizing lotion must be for the face and not the body one and the brand would depend on where u live

Re: Urgh facial hair!

i think threading makes your hair go back thick and is easy to maintain, to have laser you have to shave the hair anyway!

wat is hair minimizing lotion and where can i get it..lol i never heard of it...

well what you can do is use threading for your upper lips and use bleech cream for your face

Re: Urgh facial hair!

firstly, you're not the only one to shave and hide it from family members and in all those cases husbands did know; they just pretended they didn't. so first of all, i'd sit down and talk to your hubby about it - it'd be a weight off your mind.

laser treatment or electrolysis won't work if the hair growth is due to a hormonal problem - the hair will keep returning. one of the first things any reputable salon that truly wants to help you would do, would be to look at your facial hair growth and ask if you've had tests to confirm whether or not it's due to hormones.

i think that first you need to confirm with your doctor if your problem is under control - if so, then you can consider laser or electrolysis.
you could wax or thread but in my experience, it's the ladies who have coarse growth due to a problem, that end up with really bad ingrowns and scarring - especially on the chin and sideburn area.

shaving might be annoying but at least you won't mess up your skin. i'm sure if you can get the courage to confess it to your husband, it won't bother you as much that you do shave.

Re: Urgh facial hair!

hair minimizing cream works when you use it after removing hair from the roots - at least thats what i have read
for normal facial hair it wont be of much benefit but for thick hair it may make it grow a bit finer

Re: Urgh facial hair!

btw i have heard bleach increases hair growth on the face?
i have seen a few girls who bleach their face and their hair are much longer

Re: Urgh facial hair!

^ yeah ive seen it too... its kinda like =|

laser is your best option. I dont know about whether hormones prevent laser from working, but they do definitely ask whether you're on birth control or not. Ive seen it help a ton of people. Besides, your work schedule shouldnt interfere, you schedule the appointments far apart (6-8 weeks apart) and you can do them at times that would be convenient. Most laser places even have hours after work hours to make ti more convenient for you...and if not, it shouldn't take more than 10 minutes anyhow for facial hair.

Its absolutely worth the money...trust me. Creams, waxing, threading, none of this will help the way lasers will, especially if your hair is dark and coarse. Just research laser places in your area and get a free consultation. Also, if youre in the US, look up prospective laser places on the better business bureau. Something like American Laser Center is NOT a good idea, for example.

Re: Urgh facial hair!

because i can't be bothered to argue. from the website of a random place offering laser:

"If you have an underlying hormonal issue causing the hair growth, you won't see good results from laser hair removal until you get it under control. Your body will be busy developing new hair and regardless of how much of the "current" hair is destroyed, it will be replaced by new hair. You will need to stop treatment and obtain medication to stabilize your hormonal levels."

Re: Urgh facial hair!

Have you consulted a doctor? You should rule out any hormonal disturbances first. If you have abnormal hair growth, irregular/scanty periods and weight gain then polycystic ovrian disease has to be ruled out. Once you pin point the problem, the problem can be treated.

Re: Urgh facial hair!

mahi, she said this in her post:
"But how?! The growth is really bad (down to medical problem, on meds but not working as well as I'd hoped) and the hair grows back really coarse and thick within 2 days."

Re: Urgh facial hair!

There must be some alternative treatment. Maybe changing meds and adjusting the dose would help. What about shaving and waxing alternatively?

Re: Urgh facial hair!

Here's an idea for avoiding laser: maybe you could let only some parts of your face grow at a time, and as the hairs grow, bleach them. When they;re long enough, thread or wax the area. For example, let only the top half of your upper lip grow and continue to shave the bottom. let it grow for a week, use bleach to keep it unnoticeable then thread/wax/tweeze by the end of the week. then work your way around your face. I don't know i haven't figured out the logistics yet, but you get the idea. but you know- honestly, if you exfoliate and have a good pair of sharp tweezers with a magnification mirror and are patient, you can pluck away even really short hairs.

Thank you for all the replies everyone, I’m sorry it’s taken me a while to get back on here.

Well the problem with waxing and threading is that, I have tried it before but obviously it doesn’t work properly unless the hair is of a reasonable length. I literally can’t bring myself to let it grow too long because I feel really self conscious. Especially around my husband who’s very (this isn’t meant to sound naughty in anyway lol) touchy feely, always lovingly stroking my face and playing with my hair. So the last thing I want to do is have him stroke my stubble!

How long does the hair have to be for hair removal creams to work?

And thank you Stoppit, your post was very helpful. Yes it’s down to a hormonal problem but Mahismart its not PCOS, they ruled that out in my early teens. I’m constantly changing meds but nothing seems to be making a difference, my doctor was actually the one who suggested laser but after a bit of research the point stoppit made keeps popping up. Growth due to hormones can’t be stopped.

I don’t think I have the courage to tell my hubby, I’ve never told anyone! We’ve been married just over 4 months now (mashalla) but I’m really scared it will put him off me kinda thing.

Can anyone recommend a good hair minimizing cream? Even if it just makes the hair grow back finer that would be really helpful too.

Urgh I think this hairs here to stay then :bummer:

Re: Urgh facial hair!

I've tried plucking and I just cried my eyes out, it hurts so much when its not your eyebrows! Its def a no no, try hair removing cream, painless and effective IMO.

Re: Urgh facial hair!

if Gina were here she’d be horrified at the thought of suggesting hair removal cream for the face.
a lot of people have bad reactions with it on the body, let alone the face. you would still have to use it every 3 to 4 days (if you’re shaving every 2 days at the mo) and those chemicals on such a regular basis would not be good for the skin in the long run, even if there were no immediate negative side effects. if you do try it, make sure you get one that is meant for use on the face.

i’m not being purposefully negative and saying there’s no solution but i really think some risks aren’t worth it.
sonia_c - please find the courage to talk to your husband. he sounds loving and i’m sure this will not be as big a deal as you think it will be. i’m also pretty sure he already knows you do something so it probably won’t be a surprise to him. it will be a huge weight off your mind and i think if anything, it will bring you closer together. imo, sharing what we can’t with others, is what makes the bond between husband and wife.
i’A you will find a solution to your hormone problem, then you can look into something permanent like laser or electrolysis. just do not expect your doc to give you good advice - 99% of them don’t have a clue about Laser treatments.
