Re: Urdu Proverbs...

What is the difference between proverb and an idiom

like muhaavra Vs Zarb-ul-Misl....

Re: Urdu Proverbs...

A proverb is something which teaches and has history behind it...An idiom is used to express a sentiment but not always necessary in rhyme...

Like: "Early to bed and early to rise and so on..." is a proverb first uttered by Ben F...

An idiom expresses a sentiment like: "I am going to kick your ass... Although there is no literal ass to kick...It just expresses an emotion...You just get what it means...

Re: Urdu Proverbs...

Zarb-ul-Misl main Tashbeehaat ka unsar numaya hota hay . . .

Re: Urdu Proverbs...

*"Aanhkon ki reh gayeen sooyiaan, aur gayee karnay singhaar...*

Meaning: Just a little more to go, no time for rest or frivolity...

History: A certain king was hexed with a spell that made needles go throughout his body...One of his two wives spends an entire night plucking the needles out of the king's body...

When she comes to the eyes of the king, she decides to go and pretty herself so that when the king opens his eyes, he will see who spent the night taking the needles out of his body fall in love with her all over again...

As she leaves to tidy up, the second wife walks in and calmly removes the remaining pins from the king's eyes who upon immediate revival finds wife #2 and falls deeply in love with her...

This proverb is also used as an idiom if split in half, i.e. 'Aankhon ki sooyiaan reh gayeen hain..."

Meaning, if ever asked, how much work you have left to do and it's just a little, you can say this...

Re: Urdu Proverbs...

"Mor ko us ki dum le Doobi..."

Meaning: When someone haughty, vain or arrogant takes a fall through pride or arrogance...

History: During the monsoons, it is high mating season for the peacock and the males are in full plume...

The plumes though being breathtakingly beautiful, are heavy...It is during this time that tigers go on an all inclusive peacock diet...

Although the peacock is an agile flyer, the cumbersome plumage during the mating season makes it heavy and clumsy...And easy prey for a tiger...
