Shocked to see so much Punjabi bashing in this thread. I am lucky I guess because I can understand pashtu and memoni, speak urdu and Punjabi fluently. This is the way it should be. People should be well versed in both the national language and their mother language. Instead of trying to stick to one language and enforcing some alien language on yourself. I love Punjabi because not many people speak it and I feel some sort of connection to Punjabis because of the language. If everyone spoke the same language then it would be really boring. I feel I am special because I know TWO PAKISTANI LANGUAGES. Mostly, urdu speaking people just know ONE language.
However I do agree that urdu should be a common language. I mean let's say I only knew Punjabi and I went to Karachi where everyone spoke urdu then I might have gotten a bit lost. Or no wait, Punjabi speakers can easily understand urdu. Let's say an urdu speaker ended up in Punjab where everyone was talking to him/her in Punjabi, he would not get it. So yes people should know both urdu and their mother language.
LOL that reminds me, when I talk in urdu I deliberately talk in a Punjabi urdu of accent. Why do I do that? People hear my urdu and automatically ask, are you from Lahore? So my accent of urdu is like a hint about where I belong from. However when I speak in English people do not think I am a paindu person.
I definitely agree with you there, language or even what kind of accent you have has nothing to do with your intellectual capabilities. The most jahil person might be living in UK or USA and have an accent. Language is a language indeed and I believe the current system should continue. Where urdu is the national language however people are free to learn their mother languages as well.
I believe your mother language has a deep connection to your culture. Every province has a different culture, meaning different cooking styles, different clothes, different dances, different music and language is a very important part of your culture. Gives you an identity and tells you who you are.
Plus Punjabi songs and culture is so rich! Just love it! :jano: :jano: Chak de pathey!
Oh lets not forget, I love it when my urdu speaking friends or those people that don't know Punjabi ask me what the songs or lyrics mean! I am a Punjabi language promoter ;)
One only needs to ask a Sikh person what is the value of Punjabi
People who talk bad about PUnjabi do not know anything about the history of PUnjabi and how many intellectuals and poets Punjabi did bring forth.
The best Urdu poets are non-Urdu speaking
Faiz Ahmad Faiz
Allama Iqbal
Habib Jalib
Ahmed Faraz
Plus have you seen how famous Punjabi is becoming. Every other Indian movie has a Punjabi or Punjabi influenced song in it. Dil Bole Hadippa was heavily influenced by the Punjabi language. In general if we think about it, Punjabi is really famous. Even more than urdu. People listen to Punjabi songs but they so not know what it means and then ask their Punjabi friends for translation. Thank god for Imran Khan and Amar Arshi etc.
Oh and as for poetry, urdu is a relatively new language. All the great poetry has been done in Farsi and Punjabi. History is Punjab is rich and diverse and like I said we have a very rich culture.
haan definetly
i always talk about this with friends and amazed how much Punjabi is used in films and songs
but believe me i fell in love with punjabi after going to this site:
Plus if the muhajirs attack our language, they attack our culture. Punjabis have notably been seen as short tempered people so beware
I know I am amazed at this Punjabi phenomenon. The sad thing is that our Punjabi brothers and sisters from India are doing more to keep the language alive than us. Instead us Pakistanis are fighting over which should be the national language and the urdu muhajirs are bashing punjabi speakers and vice versa. We are doing an India vs Pakistan in this thread.
We should be so proud of ourselves:k:
Punjabi is here and it is here to stay. Get this fact in your head. Punjabi is the in thing these days. Definitely Punjabi is being used in films and songs. It is being used in dramas as well. Sad thing again, that India is doing more to promote Punjabi than us Pakistanis.
Punjabi is not urdu in anyways. I bet any urdu speaker to come and hear REAL punjabi and translate it. They will not be able to. There is a reason Punjabi is a language and not a dialect or something.
yeah u will never get bored
browsing through the site
and its all about punjabi culture
nothing to do with religion
all about promoting and cherishing punjabi herritage

That is really nice.
I was just wondering,** we are people who are most probably not even Pakistani and yet we are arguing over Pakistani languages like we are Pakistanis. **What about the people that go outside or are born outside Pakistan and do not even know urdu yet alone their mother language.
Seriously people should stop with the urdu and Punjabi bashing. I already cleared it that both languages are important. There is no difference. One should know their national language and their mother tongue.
Oh and I am blessed because even though English is my first language I know all the major Pakistani languages as well. Punjabi and Urdu being the fluent ones.
One should always stay in touch with their heritage and roots. Even if that means being acquainted with your culture's language.

Yeah I know what you mean. I also totally agree with you on the part where you say that Indians are keeping the Punjabi language alive. There is some stupid stigma attached with speaking Punjabi in public places in Pakistan and even in foreign communities. Even though im not nationalistic in anyway I am somewhat proud to be punjabi. The language, culture and customs are indeed very unique in the Indian subcontinent which should be an identity for Pakistani Punjabi's and not something to be seen as Pindu.
Yes, I may be somewhat bias because I cannot read, write or understand Urdu but I totally dislike how Urdu is being pushed forward by all forms of government in Pakistan but our ethnic identity is being pushed aside because of political correctness.
I am sure you don't but anti Punjabis or pro urdu language people will soon come and give their daleel against Punjabi language or how Punjabi is similar to urdu and stuff. Anyways, haters will always be there. Nothing can be done about that.

U know let them come
that way they only prove how insecure they are
it will only prove the inferiority complex that they have
i eat them raw grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
lolz
just kidding
i am not a veg but i have no appetite for them.

I know, instead us Pakistani Punjabis think it is not right to speak Punjabi and should make our kids learn Urdu. There is nothing wrong with that but Punjabi should also be taught to the kids. This is how a culture stays alive. Plus come to think about it, Punjabi culture is heavily dependent on the language. Indian Punjabis are definitely giving a boost to Punjabi all over the world. This is evident by the amount of Punjabi influenced movies and songs coming out of Bollywood these days. Even pure Punjabi singers are shockingly high in number. There is a demand that is why they are singing in Punjabi and not urdu?! This should be kept in mind much?! Punjabis from UK, USA, Canada, Holland, Denmark, India are singing in Punjabi and keeping it alive.
They should be an identity. Oh and have you noticed that many Punjabi customs and traditions have been adopted by people all over Pakistan? Where do you think parathey or lassi or makai ki roti came from. Oh and there is samosay and then there is Punjabi samosay. Did you notice the word Punjabi with the samosay word?
There is a stigma attached which should not be there.

Oh and one thing I noticed, Karachi people think that urdu language belongs to them. They are the ones that can speak urdu language properly and no one else can. That is so weird. Have they ever heard people from Lucknow speak urdu? I think that is the most purest form of urdu that is there. Urdu in Pakistan has been diluted and mixed. It is not longer the pure urdu that people used to speak. It is becoming slang urdu. There is a huge difference between the urdu written in novels in the olden times and the urdu used now.
I am proud that I am originally from Pakistan and I can speak both Urdu AND Punjabi fluently.
Oh yes, insecurity shows as well as the complexes that people have, from their comments in the thread.

I was born in Karachi and lived there for 9 years then migrated (kidnapped by my parents) to Holland.
never lived in Punjab but my parents are from PUnjab
i am Pakistan but i feel punjabi
why? only because of the greenry nothing to do with anything else
i love greenry and unfortunatly there is so little space left in Karachi bc its so crowded
thought the Nazim of karachi is doing good work these days to make Karachi
pleasant city to live in.
I do know that karachi till 1970 was such a nice and pleasant city thats why it was called the city of light.
Wow I would have never thought you would be a Karachite. My sisters were born in Karachi LOL. Punjab has always been an agricultural province and hence it is green. So can you read and understand Punjabi? :-)
