Urdu is Dead

Sometimes I look at the dramas coming on pakistani television, and some of these words are so alien to me. There was a preview of one drama - karb-e-agaahi or something like that. Even my parents did not understand what was being said.

I know many of you may have strong Urdu skills, but many of us do not.

I had an idea that I’d like to implement in this forum, and that is to have one word a day, or whenever.

Provide the word, the definition, and a sentence in which it is used.

So all of us ABCD’s can learn a little!

Re: Urdu is Dead

I'll start. This is basic I'm sure. I've seen the expression used here.

Jarru ki jhappi.

What is jhappi?

Re: Urdu is Dead

i know this one, its from an indian movie, jadoo ki jhapee,, jhapee is hug..

ok, whats phulkay? i read this in another thread..

Re: Urdu is Dead

phulkay is roti.

Re: Urdu is Dead

Its a specific type of roti. Like you have parathas, chapatis, and different variants of roti - phulkay are also a variant of roti. I have no idea how they are made though.

Re: Urdu is Dead

phulkay are kinda like chappatis. made err by making a perra and then using a rollign pin to make it flat and round and then made on a tawa.

PCG, urdu is well..some urdu speakers however, are not.

Re: Urdu is Dead

Karb-e-agaahi. Pain over knowing something. Around there.

Don't even get my started on that whole shebang.

I want to buy an urdu dictionary. Urdu, not Unjabi or Unglish.

Re: Urdu is Dead

Phulkay r puffed up bread…naram si phuli huwe.

Re: Urdu is Dead

thanks guys...
JonyBr, thats not urdu, some of it sounds farsi.. :p
ok i think fitanat is plural of fitna?

Re: Urdu is Dead

I think I've heard of "muntaj saeein".

Something about obedience maybe?

Re: Urdu is Dead

MM : Jo khud ko samajh nai aya wo farsi hai :stuck_out_tongue: IT IS URDU. Wase urdu is derived from Farsi, Hindi etc & contain alot of their words.

Fitna starts with Fai tey. While i mentioned Fitanat starts with Fai Tu’wain. So no not even close :stuck_out_tongue:

PCG : No. & “muntaj sain” dosent make sense either. Maybe it does if u use it as "muntaj*,** sain?"*

:bravo:

Re: Urdu is Dead

okay, muntaj means "jee" or "yes", or maybe even like haazir.

Re: Urdu is Dead

Jony those are some complicated words. I know a couple of them, the other ones i have to look in the dictionary, but i dont want to post it from dictionary.
Lahut is a high point in sufiism. Its like reaching a point of being close to Allah or something like that.
Muntaj is from nateeja, so it means result.
Rest yu can post if no one else posts it.

Re: Urdu is Dead

ahem, smarty pants. Use them in sentences please. Chank-you.

Re: Urdu is Dead

  1. Sariq = (Chor) Thief
  2. Lahut = Divine Presence Aye Taair-e-Lahuti, us rizq say maut achi * *Jiss Rizq say aati ho pervaaz main Kotaahi
  3. Fitanat = Intelligence, Wisdom, skill
  4. Da'ah = never heard of it, would love to know :)
