upper cast hindu women cover their heads

i am curious as to why it is that upper cast hindu women from the brahmin caste are obligated to cover their heads with dupatta. the concept seems quite similar to that in islam. any comments?

Obviously they are oppressed lol

what does THAT have to do w/ oppression???

Moona - ignore him/her/it.

It's a cultural thing. I've seen Hindus and Sikhs from all castes, backgrounds, usually cover their heads.

I think it's just north indian women because of the islamic influence although who knows maybe it was there before that time. i dont think it's just brahmins. Also theres a theory that women from the upper classes are more secluded/protected.

this how we were dressed no sexual repression

^^ The question is why are they obligated to cover their heads with dupatta. Not to find out about Indian erotica. I am sure you can do better.

no practise is universal or mandatory.

You could have said just that. Publicising erotica was not required.

It's the same reason why many Muslims in the west (myself included) don't dress traditional anymore, and wear jeans, shirts, etc.

Assimilation. Muslim control over India was once powerful enough that non-Muslims tried to look/dress Muslim. This particularly happened in the Indian upper classes, who had much greater interaction with the Muslim rulers than the common Indian peasant in a backwater village.

It's human nature for the weak to imitate the powerful. Today, most of the world tries to Westernise (look/dress/act Western).

Hundreds of years ago, even during the reign of the Turkish slave-kings in India, before the Moghuls, upper-class Hindus tried to Muslimise (look/dress/act Muslim). Many went as far as becoming Muslim too.

Mad Sci, I had read something similar once before but I wonder if this is true or just a glorified hypothesis. After all, some hindus may also tell you that the word “brahmin” is a distortion of the name of the holy prophet Ibrahim and that brahmin priests shave their heads in keeping with Ibrahim’s practices centuries ago. But really, I wonder if there is a solid answer as to where this tradition of northern Indian or brahmin Indian women covering their heads comes from. I find it very interesting.

So why is the media and film industry so heavily censored?

Xtreme :k: :hehe:

Found this on the webspace of a hindu guy

As the Islamic population in India swelled, the identity of the Indian Moslem acquired a new definition. Islam now actively influenced most facets of life. The Hindu elite adopted the purdha system and their language began to be written in Arabic script, leading to a new language, Urdu. Calligraphy came into its own and was raised to the highest form of aesthetic expression.

I think that answers your question…

So i'm still waiting to hear from Channmahi, Chaltahai, rvikz, queer etc about why there is so much censorship in Indian films and media?

India being the land of Kama Sutra and all...
