Upgrade XP to Vista

I seek help.
i’m runnin XP Home right now, but i wanna upgrade to Vista Ultimate. The only thing stopping me is, eventhough if i upgrade, will i lose all my applications that are installed right now? Or does it just overlay XP and everything’s intact as it was with XP.
Please help…

  1. Either i can easily just upgrade to Vista w/out worries of having to install a gazillioin applications i have right now

  2. I’ll have to save all the programs on an Ext. Harddrive and then reinstall after i’ve upgraded.

Really appreciate your help…

Re: Upgrade XP to Vista

I have XP on my Sony and I bought an HP with Vista Premium on it. Overall I like Vista. A few of the things are annoying that sometimes that permission box pops up where the admin has to confirm whether they really want to make a system change. Of course Word, Excel, Outlook etc. were new. 2000-2003 Office don't work on Vista. So that was a problem because they give you a 60 day trial for office 2007. After that it doesn't work.

As for other programs, such as Adobe Standard, Adobe Photoshop, Scanner (that I bought while I had XP), and a few of other optional programs, they installed without any problems. Only for the scanner, I had to go to Cannon's website and download the Vista driver, but that's all.

I am not 100% sure which one of the 2 is the best solution because I didn't do either of those. But I just wanted to let you know what I experienced, hoping it may help. If you have additional question, feel free to PM and I'll be glad to help.

Re: Upgrade XP to Vista

^^Thanks a lot for ur response Shikra! n if i need, i'll def. PM u

Hopefully someone who's done an upgrade can help..i would've called Microsoft by they're not available today :(

Re: Upgrade XP to Vista

Even though your programs will remain intact when you upgarde, I strongly recommend doing a "clean install" and not an upgrade. I upgraded my Dell from XP to Vista and even though all of my programs were saved, the performance was not very good, plus I was getting all kinds of error messages. So one day I decided to do a clean install. I saved all the stuff that I needed on DVD's and did a clean install. I now absolutely love Vista! The performance is great and it's quite stable. (Even though my scanner stopped working after I did a clean install, but it was not a big deal since I rarely use it).

Hope this helps. You can also PM if you have any other question. :)

Re: Upgrade XP to Vista

I second PB, do a clean install. There are some leftover XP files that kill the performance. Make sure you have the Vista drivers for all your hardware and all the apps are Vista compatible.

The upgrade option is there and if you don't have installation files for all your apps that would be the way to go. When you run the install it does tell you if there are apps that are not Vista compatible.

PS: Don't PM me :p

Re: Upgrade XP to Vista

yup, I agree all the above who suggested for a clean install :k:

Best would be to install to install the 64bit version right away, if the Mainboard/CPU/RAM support that? Get the most out of the installed Hardware.

Re: Upgrade XP to Vista

Ok....so why would i want to do the Vista upgrade rather than the full...i mean ws the difference...if any.

i'm runnin the Vista Upgrade Advisor right now...lets see what the results are...

Re: Upgrade XP to Vista

^^ No, he's also suggesting that you do a full install rather than the upgrade, since an upgrade leaves a lot of mess behind, thus degrading the performance.

The only time you would really want to do an upgrade is when you don't have the drivers for some of your stuff, such as printer or scanner (even though that can be obtained online).

Re: Upgrade XP to Vista

I hope you have disabled the UAC (User Account Control) and not still allowing it to annoy you :)

Re: Upgrade XP to Vista

I think I tried that but it gave me problems after that. I can't remember what kind of problems it gave me but I do know that I had to turn it back on. I have turned it off just now and will find out next time I restart my computer what kind of problems it gives me. If I remember to visit this thread again, I'll note the problems here :D

Re: Upgrade XP to Vista

I thank you all so much for your feedback and suggestions. I think i'm gonna have to do the dreadful deed and backup my stuff on dvds and then reinstall.
Is vista just as good at recognizing most drivers like XP was?

Re: Upgrade XP to Vista

Vista recognized all of my peripherals' drivers, except for the scanner, which I knew wouldn't work. I would recommend checking out the hardware manufacturer's sites for Vista compatibility.

thanks PB....:)

Re: Upgrade XP to Vista

No problem!

Good luck with the reinstall. :k: Be patient though. It takes a while to complete

Re: Upgrade XP to Vista

lol yea...i'm aware
i'm gonna do all my homework on it first though....cuz i dearly love all the crap i have installed on this setup...so if most of it doesn't work out well with vista, i might have to tough it out XP a while longer :(

Re: Upgrade XP to Vista

Same here. As I said, all programs worked fine except my Cannon scanner. All I had to do was install the Vista driver from Cannon's website. That fixed it.

Re: Upgrade XP to Vista

All's well so far...i'm almost thru burning stuff on dvds....just wondering...how do i know if my pc supports X64 or X85?
anywhere i can check to see which i can install? Which is better?

Re: Upgrade XP to Vista

For regular home use, I would say go with the regular 32 bit version. X64 provides better performance, but not all programs/games are compatible with it. Even if your hardware is compatible with x64, I would still recommend going with the 32 bit version because of the compatibility reasons.

This site lists the reaosns why home users should stick with the 32 bit version:

Re: Upgrade XP to Vista

Perfect! Thank you so much. that's exactly what i wanted to know.

Re: Upgrade XP to Vista

Vista is a joke, it's gotten worse reviews compared to any OS ever launched by windows. Check out pc-mag for quotes but I've had so many people downgrading to XP...
