Re: up to date city reports on law and order situation
Pindi and Islamabad are earily quite from what I heard... They burnt down a lot of stores, including a pretty popular Bakery whos name escapes me:(
Tough for the people there, I know someone who just went to have their daughters wedding in Islambad from the US, and had to cancel as it was on the same day as Benazirs assasination.
Re: up to date city reports on law and order situation
Sir ji, cable is still in the repairing process. We all are being routed through alternative 'limited' alternate route for internet traffic which is why its so intermittent (on and off) and you are right you are not the only one who is experiencing that.
koi haal nai hai :)
Are you talking about lahore ya karachi?! I'm in lahore.
Re: up to date city reports on law and order situation
has rioting stopped? a friend of mine from quetta said it was peaceful over the last few days. no real disturbances there. what about other places such as abbottabad, murree, mardan, swat, d i khan, d g khan, multan, bahawalpur, turbat, gwadar, mianwali?
what is the situation in sindh barring karachi and hyderabad?
am i guessing the riots only are affecting karachi and sindh, peshawar, pindi the most?

That was United Bakery. Relatives told us that there was a lot of damage in Satellite town and around Murree road. The ILs are still stuck in Karachi for a cancelled wedding and are hoping to leave tomorrow. Things are almost quiet in Gulshan.
Re: up to date city reports on law and order situation
How are the halaat in Karachi? The channels are still showing that a lot of the places nothing is open. Prices are going through the roof on normal goods.
I was thinking how it is hitting some people who may not have enough food stored at their place for events like these, especially with kids?

Train service from Karachi resumes today
KARACHI (AFP) - Rail services from Karachi will resume on Monday (today), four days after rioters torched trains and uprooted tracks following the killing of Benazir Bhutto, a minister said. The violence in the wake of Bhutto’s death has caused tens of millions of dollars in damage, the interior ministry has said, with hundreds of shops, offices and banks burnt out, along with rail stations and more than 70 trains. “From Monday evening train service from Karachi for the up country will be resumed,” railway minister Tariq Mansoor told AFP, referring to links to northern cities such as Islamabad and Lahore. Mansoor put the initial estimate of losses caused to the rail network at 12 billion rupees, saying 20 train engines and 140 coaches were destroyed in unrest. The railway infrastructure including communications and signal systems has been totally wrecked between Karachi and Sukkur, but makeshift arrangements will be made to allow the running of passenger trains, he said. Four daily trains will depart from Karachi, compared to eight before the unrest, he added. Violent protests have left at least 38 people dead and more than 50 injured in Pakistan since Bhutto was killed at a campaign rally in the northern city of Rawalpindi on Thursday. More than 400 passengers, mostly Pakistani nationals were also stranded in Indian cities of Jodhpur and New Delhi at the weekend because of the cancellation of the trains that run every Friday, the Press Trust of India reported.
India restores rail service
NEW DELHI (AFP) - India on Sunday decided to restore a train service to Pakistan two days after suspending it over security concerns. “The situation has improved. So, the govt has allowed the services to be resumed,” said Anil Saxena, a spokesman for the railways ministry. The “Samjhauta (friendship) Express” that runs between New Delhi and Lahore will leave the Indian capital late Sunday for the border town of Attari from where it would cross the border. The govt was also likely to resume the second train, the Thar Express, named after India’s western desert, to leave the city of Jodhpur for the Khokrapar next week. More than 400 passengers, mostly Pakistani nationals were stranded in Jodhpur at the weekend because of the cancellation of the train that runs every Friday, the Press Trust of India reported.
Re: up to date city reports on law and order situation
I just escaped the violence on 27th Dec. When our van reached at Qaidabad at about 6.20 I got call from my home regarding the incident at Rawalpindi. By the time I arrived at Malir 15, they started pelting stone on vehicles. Our driver drove fastly from there but later we stucked at Hasan Square and I had to go on feet. The miscreants were straight firing on people and vehicles.
Re: up to date city reports on law and order situation
They burned down United Bakery? Did the pastries offend their sensitivies? This is so pathetic … pathetic display by ‘our’ countrymen. Even if it just a few miscreants, at the end of the day, they are Pakistanis. Unbelievably jahil. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m so ashamed and embarrased by this disgusting behaviour by ‘our’ fellow countrymen, even if it is just a few. The entire world is probably giving Pakistan lanat.

Karachi limping to normal life
Updated at Monday, December 31, 2007 1245 PST
KARACHI: The city life here on the 5th day of the martyrdom of PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto has started getting back to normalcy, however, the uncertain situation galore. It may be recalled that a three-day mourning was officially announced on the unfortunate murder of Benazir Bhutto, when all the activities in the mega-metropolis here remained completely standstill. The citizens remained confined to their houses due to the loot and arson let loose in the city and the petrol pumps closing down all through these mourning days.
Essential supplies in the city started on Sunday and the City Government got several petrol pumps opened, while the things started returning to normalcy Monday morning, when the vehicles were seen plying on the roads, as these were cleared of the huge wreckages of the torched vehicles littered all over the city. Besides, petrol pumps and CNG stations have also opened up, while milk shops, bakeries and small restaurants have started entertaining the customers.
However, Lyari, Malir and other several areas have yet to come out of the shock and grief, as the life over there still remains paralyzed. Upcountry train service as yet remains suspended and efforts were afoot to get them restored. However, the people could now move through highways, as road traffics to some extent stood restored.
