Re: up to date city reports on law and order situation
you surround a person and you talk to them in sindhi and then see. old routine. anytime innocent ppl have been caught in the cross fire in Karachi in ethnic fights, the mobs were able to figure out somehow that the person is of a certain ethnicity.
anyways the point is for ppl in those areas to be safe and not assess the situation themselves, it takes time to move around and things can change within minutes.
I dont know, I have relatives there who dont speak Sindhi, the only problem they had was getting home because of blocked roads, no one beat them or anything close to that.

they are lucky, things may not be same as always, ask them not to come out till situation calm down
Re: up to date city reports on law and order situation
I know, had other relatives who were at my parents home who then got to their respective places alright without any difficulty. this was a case where they did not.
being prudent and putting safety first is the smart thing to do right now.

**Army called into Hyderabad and Karachi **
Updated at Friday, December 28, 2007 1950 PST
KARACHI: Army soldiers patrolled the streets of the southern cities of Hyderabad and Karachi on Friday in an effort to quell violence following the assassination of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, witnesses said.
The violence has killed at least 23 people, said Ghulam Mohammed Mohtaram, home secretary for Sindh province.
In Hyderabad, soldiers patrolled the streets and refused to let people out of their houses, witnesses said. Troops were also seen in Karachi.
Mohtaram confirmed that the provincial government requested the army’s help ``to control the law and order situation’’ in Karachi, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Nawab Shah and Ghotki.
Earlier, army spokesman Maj. Gen. Waheed Arshad said troops were put on alert in four cities in Sindh as a precaution but were not yet patrolling the streets.

Extreme rioting on Murree Road!!! Police using tear gas. My dad passed through Murree Road, there was a heavy contingent of police present there, there were people attacking the police and cursing at them and throwing rocks and other items at them.

I hope your families are well off now. In Lahore there is not much of a riot. Especially not in Defence area, but telephone lines, cell phones and Internet is jammed at times.

Re: up to date city reports on law and order situation
i woud never thought i would say this but the mqm have apparently played a positive role in some areas of karachi ie f b area, nazimabad, gulshan - where they have cleared roads of ppp fighters/looters and counter-fought them.
Re: up to date city reports on law and order situation
X2 - I am so sorry to hear about your maamoo. I am glad to hear that he made it out safely. We finally got through to the parents this afternoon. They said that a nearby shopping area being looted and on fire. They are really anxious to get out of karachi asap. Fortunately khala had the house and freezer well stocked because they were expecting many more guests in the next few days, so there is no need to go out for awhile. The biggest concern is that the family is separated in different parts of karachi. They wanted to try to get together today but we told them to stay where they are. Islamabad is calmer. The looting is unreal - my SIL said that many of the banks have been looted and burned.
Re: up to date city reports on law and order situation
Protesting and getting angry is their right but I hope people who are looting banks taking advantage of the situation should be shot. How dare they are using this criticial juncture for their personal gains.
I was at centerpoint signal in lahore last evening and there were some 20 odd youngsters using sticks on cars at signals and they were friggin laughing and enjoying that. They were just doing it for fun and not out of anger. Sad!!

X2, thank God the family is safe.
There are always insane elements - the fire starters. But when the $hit hits the fan, these guys are the first ones to disappear and leave the peaceful protesters to face the fire.
Re: up to date city reports on law and order situation
all, I am in Gulshan Iqbal and I can’t agree on this part. MQM has almost all control on Karachi but only when it comes to them destroying the city/ransacking/bhatta-khoring, not when defending it. PPP jiyalas burnt properties, hundreds of cars, minibuses, banks, other government/private properties and MQM was busy somewhere else. I don’t want to play any political game here but MQM stayed silent for major part of the “protests” so far, hopefully today will be a more peaceful day.
It is true for all political parties who have a city/area under their control. They use the city for their own interests but fail to “defend” it on such occasions. I can’t recall a single example of otherwise situation.

There are many many incidents of loot maar as well, people breaking into shops during "protests".... when people can loot the aid trucks meant for quake affected people then this is not far from such people.
