Re: up to date city reports on law and order situation

we live right across from Bhutto's home in Karachi so understandably its really bad where we are.

yesterday we were in Regal Market in Saddar when it happened. Less than an hour after that every street was choked, evidently people wanted to get to safety before anything happened. We tried to get to our relatives who live close to the airport, but that was impossible. So after three and half hours we got to about 2 miles from our house. We couldnt take the car further because on every side of us they were stopping cars and burning them. My mother who was just diagnosed with a heart condition was stressed out as it was, but we had no option but to walk from there, even as we saw cars burning on every street corner, and people coming back having been looted.

We walked for about a mile and a half before we saw a rickshaw who said hed take us as far as he could. When we approached Bilawal chowrangi though we were accosted by about ten PPP supporters who had been burning cars all over the place. Thankfully they were still humans and let me and my mom walk to our house, infact escorted us.. but not ten paces and about 8 police mobiles came guns blazing sirens blaring. The youths scattered all over the place leaving me and my mom in front of the headlights like reindeer in front of..well headlights. Thankfully no crossfire or anything happened, and we managed to get home after that without incident.

Right now, the whole area is shut down close to where I live. Barbecue Tonight, a famous restaurant in this part of the city is bombed out, as are the banks near where we live. Overall it pretty much is a warzone.

While the anger is understandable, it is really sad that the people who pay for this stuff are taxi drivers and motorcycle owners.

Re: up to date city reports on law and order situation

a friend of mine form julistan i jauhr says that most of the trouble in karachi is from his own area because there is a larger sindhi population there. most of the touble in karachi is there there are sindhi populations

"others not much effected except the highways.. or gates of khi... like superhigway and national highway... there too sindhi villages.. so they burnt vehicles"

most of us who are from abroad will think the whole of karachi or pakistan is burning but this is not the case - from what i gather its some areas that are affected. my friend added the worst of it is over and hopefully peace prevail. people cant riot forever. eventually they will get tired. the danger will be if ppp supporters antagnoise mmm, pml-q, or if things get ethnic and sindhis start blaming people from pakhtun areas for harbouring terrorists. anyway insha allah it will never happen. pakistan has taken a lot of knocks and survived them. im confident it will survive this.

Re: up to date city reports on law and order situation

Any more news on the gulshan area of karachi? Are the cell phones working yet? We are still trying to reach relatives there. None of our other family members have heard from them yet and we're getting really panicked at this point! Please PM me if you have more specific info.

Re: up to date city reports on law and order situation

amana cellphones are working now, atleast mine is. hopefully your relatives will be safe, inshallah.

Re: up to date city reports on law and order situation

Cell Phones in some areas are still not working. Landhi, FB AREA, Bhadurabad were working when I called, but North Karachi, New Karachi area still not working.

Re: up to date city reports on law and order situation

Finally spoke to other relatives, everyone is safe, alhumdulillah. They are all at the same house now trying to stay in. Needless to say this was the end of the wedding for now. We're trying to convince them that it's about the time to shift here permanently. Insh'Allah everyone else's family is also safe.

Re: up to date city reports on law and order situation

Mob attack on my mamoon in gulshan e maymaar area. karachi -
noon time
source of info- my dad

amana please tell them to stay in. my mamoon was at my parents place and his son had taken shelter at a freinds place. mamoon left mid morning to first pick his so and then go home, he was using public transportation, did not find taxis so took buses to get to where his son was, picked him up, and then waited around Nipa for a bus for over an hour, took some bus to go towards gulshan e maymaar, had to walk and then got surrounded by a mob of sindhis who wanted to beat them with sticks for being mohajir. He and his son got beaten up a bit but then saved themselves by saying tha are Punjabis who live in Jeddah just visiting relatives in Karachi.

needless to say everyne is staying home, my dad went for Jummah prayers and said everything in his area is closed.

please tell your family members to be safe, and if they are stuck somewhere to stay there. army and rangers are stepping in to control these mobs, until that happens you never know, when mamoon left he thought it was safe, called around in all areas to get ppls views on situation, but these things are very unpredictable.

better be safe than sorry.

Re: up to date city reports on law and order situation

I wonder how the mob was able to tell he was 'mohajir', I mean they certainly dont have anything written on them.

Re: up to date city reports on law and order situation

So sad, nice to hear that they are safe, how do they distinguish between Sindhis and Mohajir, look wise you shud be like pathans

Re: up to date city reports on law and order situation

you surround a person and you talk to them in sindhi and then see. old routine. anytime innocent ppl have been caught in the cross fire in Karachi in ethnic fights, the mobs were able to figure out somehow that the person is of a certain ethnicity.

anyways the point is for ppl in those areas to be safe and not assess the situation themselves, it takes time to move around and things can change within minutes.

Re: up to date city reports on law and order situation

^ language primarily

Re: up to date city reports on law and order situation

being a multilingual is very useful in this type of situations
do they speak punjabi?

Re: up to date city reports on law and order situation

not sure about my cousin but mamoon speaks it very well. most of his friends in KSA are punjabi and he has been there since early 80's.
