I usually associate above situation with the 'NICE GUY' syndrome (in ur case it will be NICE GURL hehehe).
This is a v.common scenerio when people are over and you don't know them much / don't have many things in common. You look for things to talk too that are in common but you don't want to go too personal (cuz it can come back to you too)
Now my solution is not for everyone. You have two choices. Either talk about something contraversial OR ask an opinion about something religious (the "problem" is lil out of the norm but not specific to you). This is not for you to get informed but just to get the conv. going. You will be amazed how much info you will get out of them (even though they will not have any knowledge about the subject). :)
I myself can talk about nothign for hours so usually not in that situation :)
