Unlocking the iPhone 4

I bought a pretty decent iphone4 from craigslist and unlocked it in 2 mins using gevey sim ( not to mention that it took me about 10 mins to cut, trim and file my regular t-mobile sim to a micro sim)

Phone works beautifully except that FaceTime is not supported in unlocked phones, plus even Skype was not working but after downloading a fix, I can at least receive Skype calls.

Anyone else using a jailbroken unlocked iPhone 4? Please do share your experience as I want to know what to expect.

Re: Unlocking the iPhone 4

I have a jail broken unlocked ( from the company) 3Gs, and all I had to do is wipe it on the side of my jeans, put a film protector, a snazzy cover, and I’m all set :snooty:!

So you can’t make Skype calls?

Re: Unlocking the iPhone 4

First and foremost. The two need to switch phones pronto. The queen gets the sweet stuff while the king the lousy’s (lousy as in not so latest). Until then, I be outties with them paperworks. :snooty:

Re: Unlocking the iPhone 4

Do Facetime and Skype really not work with unlocked iPhones? I was going to get one for my other half..

A factory unlocked or a Gevey unlocked Iphone4 works equally well.

As for Facetime, that is very much easy to enable as well. All you need to do is to follow this guide to the tee and you shall be good to go.

[QUOTE=]
First, get to your desired firmware (I’m running 4.3.3), jailbreak it (may not be necessary, but I jailbroke mine), and ensure it’s properly activated and that push is working. Either use a legit sim, or SAM to activate.

Then, use the program DISK AID, connect to the root of your iPhone.
Navigate to System > Library > Carrier bundles > iPhone > Unknown.bundle

Save out the carrier.plist that is in unknown.bundle. Save it to your desktop somewhere you can find it later.

Then, navigate to your intended carrier bundle, for example, mine was Rogers, so I went into the Rogers_ca.bundle, copy the carrier.pist from here into the unknown.bundle folder.

You have just overwritten the stock unknown carrier plist with the Rogers carrier plist.

The reason for this is so that you can use the correct number registration used for facetime activations.

Reboot your iPhone. Do the gevey process again. If you can’t see the option to edit your “Cellular Data Network” in Settings > General > Network, then it worked. To clarify, it should be missing.

So, now you have verified that you are using the Rogers carrier.plist. Go to Settings > Phone > and Turn ON facetime.
It will send a text message to the proper Rogers auth number (49988) instead of the UK number the unknown carrier tried to use.

You will be authorized! FaceTime works. Congrats.

Now.. you could leave it as is, but you might not have wifi tethering support.

To enable tethering, reconnect your phone to DISK AID and restore the saved unknown.bundle carrier.plist into the uknown.carrier folder.

Reboot.
Do Gevey process again.
Go to Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network, and reset settings.
It should clear all APNs
Manually re-enter your carrier settings for APN, MMS and Tether.

Exit

Everything should now be working, Push, Facetime, Cell Data, WiFi Tether.
You’re welcome!

NOTES: This process of swapping the carrier.plist file into the unknown bundle folder should work to enable facetime with any OFFICIAL carrier.

You must copy the plists around because editing them is not possible, the plists on iOS 4.x are signed and cannot be changed, but you CAN move them around.

The above has worked well and on atleast 4-5 different phones. Report back if it doesn’t for you.

Goodluck.

They work fine! I have an unlocked phone. One just has to enable FaceTime.

Re: Unlocking the iPhone 4

What? That is so not true.

Exodus, i will try and report back here

Re: Unlocking the iPhone 4

give me your facetime ID. I will prove it to you

Re: Unlocking the iPhone 4

i bought the factory unlocked iphone 4s two weeks ago.. do i need to unlock it :hmmm:

Re: Unlocking the iPhone 4

I don’t get it either. I have a JB’d iPad2 and my facetime works fine. Skype too.

Re: Unlocking the iPhone 4

I will send you my FaceTime ID seb

TB unlocked is not same as JB, is it?

Re: Unlocking the iPhone 4

No it isn’t.

3rd party applications such as Mxtube (Youtube videos downloader) IphoneModem (Lets one connect their Laptops/Desktop via their Iphones to access internet) cannot be installed on a unlocked phone. A Jailbroken phone on the other hand enables you to install those as well as limitless other applications and apply customizations on the device.

Re: Unlocking the iPhone 4

Once you JB it then you just run this little utility to unlock it. As Exodus said you may need to modify the plist (config) for the setting a bit (not sure) and you’d be set.

We should have a Facetime meeting for GS. What do you say? Let’s get everyone connected. There’s another app called Tango which is avaiable for other platforms too. Who’s up for it?

Re: Unlocking the iPhone 4

Dang you guys are confusing the heck out of me ..

Ok, good thing is that my Skype is working. I can make and receive video calls.

Re: Unlocking the iPhone 4

in.

Re: Unlocking the iPhone 4

no you dont need it to unlock again, you can jailbroke it in order to get applications.

Re: Unlocking the iPhone 4

^ STA , 4S uses A5 and it cannot be jailbroken yet. comex did pdf-exploit the ipad2 with A5 but they closed down the hole.

TLK, so you unlocked your 4 with gevey tray, but did you jb aswell? once you have jailbroken it, you can pretty much get it to do what ever you want, like make videos apps work on 3g that require wifi , customize your skype and loads of other things.

Re: Unlocking the iPhone 4

depends on the bootrom of the phone, even if you jailbreak it, its not possible you will be able to unlock it, there are many bootrom versions that still are unlockable, that is why when you jailbreak it is very important to preserve your baseband so you dont lose the unlock if you require one

Re: Unlocking the iPhone 4

NO, because its already unlocked and can be used with any carrier, and there is no tethered or un-tethered jb solution out for 4s yet, so you can’t jailbreak it, so use it as it is.
