They are not recognized outside of Pakistan.

Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were both college drop outs. Both were the creators and revolutionized information technology and yes they were/are the richest people on earth. It does not matter whether some one's university is 36th or 18th, who cares :)

exactly. I think a degree these days is a social status more than anything.

These are two extreme examples, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were successful because of sheer talent, dedication as well as luck to an extent, otherwise there are thousands if not millions who are "drop outs" but they didn't reach the same stage, and there are many good university graduates who made top companies, some made it while still being in college.

So you are saying you can work in NASA, Boeing, Raytheon type companies without a degree and still churn out top notch weaponry, top notch intelligence/defense systems? People can find cures to diseases, come up with different medicines without going to medical school?
Re: University Rankings - Worlds top 200
Well NUST is not in this list as this list is really the cream of the world, but NUST is really a very good institution of Pakistan and we should be proud of that (I have spent some time there and I know the standard of the university). LUMS, NUST, GIK, Fast are not in this list. The Engineers and Doctors Pakistani universities produce are second to none in the world.
I also know quite a few faculty members who have recently left NUST and I happen to know quite a few graduates of NUST who don't want to continue their masters there. I think there is a difference between making a lot of noise and being actually a world class university. I know FAST, LUMS very well and NUST to some extent and I think LUMS is way ahead of the game. The only thing is that they don't blow their trumpet so much and don't take submission of info to ranking agencies seriously.....otherwise LUMS is 10 times better than NUST.
NUST is a fine University, just not the stanford they are trying to portray themselves as.
Re: University Rankings - Worlds top 200
You might be right about some faculty members leaving NUST, even when I was there, there used to be some clash between the civilians and the military people. The head of department of Electrical Engineering left EME College and joined LUMS. There are a few engineering courses in LUMs but otherwise its more geared towards Business studies and Computer Software/Engineering where as NUST is mostly medical sciences and Engineering so you cannot really compare the two. LUMs is a very good institute as well, anyways here’s a list of university rankings of asia and according to it NUST is the only Pakistani university in the Asian top 100. http://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/asian-university-rankings/2011?page=1
Re: University Rankings - Worlds top 200
well if alexander fleming was able to discover penicillin without going to university and james watt discovered the steam engine without having even stepped inside a higher education institution then yeah it can be done without a degree. Even if you look at a good chunk of todays business leaders (alan sugar and hilary devey come to mind) have never had any further education. Ok maybe saying that a degree is a social status was a bit much on my part but it certainly isnt the be all and end all as far as entering the job market is concerned.

I am not denying the importance of excellent educational institutions. After graduating from NED Karachi (which I still consider it as one of the top engineering institution), I did masters in one of these top universities But these are not a guarantee for producing creators that revolutionized the world. Can I quote tons of such other people who never went to such elite and super duper universities and colleges?

If a top firm wants to hire a person for its top research position or top management position and you present them one graduate from institution ranked 250+ and one from top 50, you know who will get hired and how much he will be paid :). Yes the "creativity" does not necessarily come from the institutions, probably entrepreneurship to some advantage.
Re: University Rankings - Worlds top 200
My university is in the top 30's on the list and I majored in a field that the university is known to be one of the best in terms of research for, yet I'm still struggling with finding a job.
Screw this list.
