My mum lived on the same street and had been asked by my dad's mum to come over and help put the gota/sequins on the wedding lengha for this girl my dad was supposed to be marrying.
The day before the wedding my dad's mum fell out with girls family over jaheez and the girls family broke off the wedding. So in deperation my dad's mum came running to my mum's house and asked for my mum's rishta and they said yes and my mum got married the next day to my dad...and wore that very lengha she had helped to make. A few months later she came to the UK and they have now been married 30 years.

Its not sad. Your mum and dad were supposed to get married to each other and when Allah Swt wants something to happen, it happens because it is better for everyone. Yes, things can seem to be sad for sometime, but I am sure that girl also had got some good guy as her husband.

Such stories really make me wonder if its true at all tht the Almighty has no hand in who you get married to and how.

No hand of Almighty? I think it shows that Allah has complete power in choosing our life partner. Her dad and the family planned to marry that girl but Allah knew that her mum was best for his dad and he had written her mum in her dad's qismat.

AND that is precisely what i am saying too! Such cases do show there is a supreme power directing these things but then people say who we get married to is not destined, its more like result of what we select and how we go about the whole thing. Very confusing.

Oh sorry I misunderstood you. Really? Do some people say like that? I wonder about the strength of their iman then. Everything is written by Allah and everything happens according to his will. If a guy selects a girl and marries her, it was also according to Allah's will. Its just that they want to take all the credit :p
