Unexpected guests

Just curious and all… how well-equipped is your kitchen if guests were to drop by unexpectedly?

  • Would they be treated to a full “proper” meal? (proper as in… salan, roti, rice, salad etc)

  • You could whip something up and serve them so long as they’re not picky!

  • They gonna starve :hehe:

I used to fall under the last category but now it’s hovering more in the middle now…since I do have alot of frozen fish/pasta/dry foods etc in the house, I could whip something up quickly and feed a guest or two…

Re: Unexpected guests

Make anday ka salan which takes no time. Any chicken salan would not take any time either.

Re: Unexpected guests

Umm that's not what I was asking.

Re: Unexpected guests

Mostly it's in the first category but of late it's been falling more towards the last one at least for 'tea time snacks' especially if they are uninvited and fussy "I can't eat this can you make this (what you don't have) for me"- mostly when they turn up they are at least 10 in number, so mostly we equip them with snacks first.

Last time they turned up right before we were stepping out for our weekend shopping (there was nothing in the house pretty much, weird cos I am so used to having our kitchen/pantry full), I just made them some pakoreh, mint chutney and fried some shaami kebabs with lassi/chai/coffee/crisps.

For the main course mostly have some form of veg/meat in the fridge so can quickly come up with something I guess, I hope nobody turns up tonight because there is no aata so they won't get treated with roti/parathas :P

Re: Unexpected guests

Offer whatever is available, left overs, etc.

When you come without advance notice, you pay.

I hate surprises! Please do call in advance. If my pantry is full I can manage to feed people but I am more worried if the possible is clean or not (ESP bathroom and kitchen). Once the house is in order then I can whip or find something. My mom always has samosas, shami kababs and egg rolls made in abundance in the fridge for walk in guests. I'm my family I pretty much use whatever I made for lunches and snacks. I have to sit down and make like 100 samosas and egg tools. But I am afraid I will eat them all so I refrain from massive cooking.

Re: Unexpected guests

Has anyone ever had guests drop by unexpectedly and then actually criticize you for not serving them a "proper" four course meal?

Re: Unexpected guests

I did and that is what my reply is about. We have andas in fridge and all kind of chicken in freezer , whole chicken cut and cleaned , boneless chicken cut and clean and ready in minutes. etc etc.

Re: Unexpected guests

Before I had my baby I used to fall under first category. I had frozen shami kababs, keema patties, samosas, etc in freezer for unexpected guests. Now, I get scared at thought of an unexpected guest because A) House is almost always messy and unclean and B) No time or help from hubby to make large batches of anything to freeze. :o If someone drops by I usually serve tea/coffee with cookies, etc or if I have cooked something nice for dinner I offer it to guests.

Re: Unexpected guests

A proper 4 course meal for guests? o_O We never do that, unless they are coming for something special OR we haven't seen them in ages.

We usually do 'tea time snacks' for anyone who comes. These are usually already made and frozen such as samosa, shami kababs, egg rolls etc. OR maybe we will take out some chicken breast, which can defrost pretty quick, and fry some up. Then we always have other 'filler' such as cake/cookies/etc.

And no one has ever complained and wanted a full meal.

Re: Unexpected guests

We have not entertained unexpected-guests for ages but koi bhola bhatka ager kabhi aa gaya tu at least bhooka nahi jayee ga.

They only complain if they were invited or we were expecting them. You cant ring somebody's door bell and complain esp in America where it is typically not the culture in most cities. There are some places where pol do this but in most. Most people come when they are invited.

Re: Unexpected guests

Well I atleast have one or two guests dropping buy unexpectedly at unexpected time every week. I am used to of this behavior of my husbands frnds so usually i am well equipped. i always keep a stock of shami and chappal kebabs. I always marinate chicken legs and freeze them in zip locks either uncooked or steamed and then i just defrost them and throw them on grill pan or in oven. Along with these two i will make one curry and one rice dish depending upon the amount of time i have and serve them with salads.
If i just have to serve tea i will use either of the kebabs with some frozen samosas, fruit salad and channa char along with assortment of cookies and sometimes sandwiches or boneless fried chicken.
Like another guppie i am more concerned about cleaning up than cooking food as i am the most unorganized person on the planet.

Re: Unexpected guests

for unexpected guests, I usually just do tea with cookies, cake etc. and if it;s meal time, we just order a pizza! I have done that quite a few times.. no issues with it!

Re: Unexpected guests

I usually have stuff like seekh kababs, shaami kababs, naans, in my freezer, so if someone suddenly shows up, I can fix a quick curry an rice and have the frozen stuff as well. It happens a lot in my home!

Re: Unexpected guests

2 minute noodles : hehe:

Re: Unexpected guests

I fall in the 1st one.... full meal served.
pretty much we have everything required for desi dishes and yes im a house wife(full-time) so not a prob :)
I know it can be hard for working women.

Re: Unexpected guests

Probably tea and I'll bake something quick. If they stay longer I'll make a meal, but pretty ssimple (one dish) of it's unexpected guests.

Re: Unexpected guests

How can you a provide a full meal on the spot? I mean, chicken does take a while to thaw, so if I didn't have it thawed already, I'd be stuck...how do you get around that?

Re: Unexpected guests

I wouldn't serve them a full meal-they would have to make do with starters e.g. aloo tikkis and chai.
