Says if people desire he can join politics; Nawaz is closet Taliban

By Sami Abraham

WASHINGTON: Former president Pervez Musharraf has said he could take part in Pakistani politics from the platform of newly registered political party - the All Pakistan Muslim League - but a decision in this respect would be taken only if the people of Pakistan ask him to do this.

Talking to the Voice of America (VoA) shortly before delivering a speech in Seattle on Sunday afternoon, the former dictator smilingly said: “I know a political party has been registered in Pakistan and Barrister Saif was its coordinator. However, I would decide to go back to Pakistan at an appropriate time and join politics if the people of Pakistan wanted me to do that.”

When he was told that during 2007 when he was the president of the country certain records of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) regarding the Swiss cases againstMohtarma Benazir Bhutto and President Asif Ali Zardari was destroyed, he said in a very firm tone: “It is all nonsense. I never gave any orders to destroy any record. And frankly speaking I am not even aware of any such happening.”

Later, responding to the questions after the speech in front of a gathering of about 300 people, arranged by an organisation - Friends of Pakistan First - the former president said that he had an understanding with Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto according to which cases against her were to be dropped and restriction on becoming the prime minister for the third term also had to be withdrawn. And, in return, she had agreed not to return to Pakistan before the elections, he said.

“But she returned to Pakistan before elections and it was a violations of what we had agreed,” he said. When asked to comment on the possible role of PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif, Musharraf said: “A person who I call a closet Taliban. I feel he’ll be a bigger disaster. And also, he has a tendency of can’t function with anyone.”

Musharraf said under the present circumstances Pakistan needed a leader who could pull together bureaucracy, political leadership and the military. Answering a question about corruption during his regime, he said that there was no corruption during the time he was the president and also no one in the cabinet was dishonest.

Online adds: Speaking to the audience - largely Pakistani Americans - Musharraf said the Taliban’s brand of Islamic extremism poses a serious threat to the nation. “We need to ask ourselves, do we or don’t we want a Taliban/al-Qaeda culture in Pakistan … because every action then flows from that decision.”

Musharraf’s visit prompted more than 70 protesters to gather early on Sunday evening on a sidewalk outside the Westin Hotel in Bellevue where he spoke. One sign read “Dictator Not Welcome,” while others read, “Stand for Peace” and “Mister Commando is on the Run.” “My biggest concern is that he was a dictator and now he is getting this welcome in America,” said Agha Khan, a Microsoft software engineer at the protest.

Musharraf also faces bitter opposition in Pakistan, where there are calls that he be put on trial for detention of the Supreme Court justices and other alleged violations of the Constitution. “Security would be a huge issue for Musharraf if he returns,” said Ryan Crocker, the former US ambassador to Pakistan, who is from Spokane. “So there would have to be some very solid understandings, backed up by the Army,” he added.

Musharraf, in his remarks, boosted his governance in Pakistan. He called Pakistan a “failed state” that was defaulting on debts when he came to power in 1999, and said he was able to increase freedom of the press, improve rights of minorities and stabilise the economy.

During his evening remarks, Musharraf said he lacked one thing - legitimacy domestically and internationally. He conceded he was labelled a dictator. Asad Faizi, 42, a Seattle Pakistani, who organised the protest of Musharraf’s speech, challenged Musharraf’s characterisation of Pakistan’s economic growth during his rule.

Faizi said the economy was vibrant for two or three years because the United States funnelled $12 billion to Pakistan in exchange for Musharraf’s agreement to fight terrorism. But Musharraf didn’t invest in infrastructure or long-lasting changes to build a sustainable economy, said Faizi, who has lived in California and then Seattle for the past 25 years.

Musharraf also spoke about the tense relationship between Pakistan and India. At the news conference, Musharraf denied that Pakistan has supported terrorist activity in India, which he accused of “hyper reactions” after attacks by Islamic militants in Mumbai in 2008. He accused India of supporting terrorism in Pakistan, including Balochistan.

“We must stop this confrontation between India and Pakistan,” Musharraf said, adding “We must go for peace for the sake of the world, because the world considers us to be a nuclear flashpoint.” The former president now lives in London but has been on a speaking tour through the United States this month.

After the Sept 11 attacks, Musharraf said, he didn’t buckle right away to the US demands as Bush prepared to go to war in Afghanistan. Instead, he said, it took five or six days of negotiations and Pakistan did not give the US everything it wanted, such as access to Pakistan’s ports.

**Baitullah Mehsud’s aide arrested
By Faraz Khan

KARACHI: An alleged close aide of Baitullah Mehsud - a senior Taliban leader who was killed last year - has been arrested from Karachi, officials of the Anti-Extremist Cell (AEC) of Sindh police’s Crime Investigation Department claimed on Tuesday.

The AEC officials said Suleman Mehsud alias Gul Shah alias Naik alias Lal Khan was affiliated with the banned outfit Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, and a special AEC team had made the arrest from Bin Qasim Town after raiding the area on a tip-off.

Two kilogrammes of potassium nitrate, around 20 metres of detonation wire and a TT pistol was also recovered on Mehsud’s indication; and the investigators are looking for his companions who are hiding in the city, the officials added.

AEC chief SSP Omer Shahid said Mehsud was also involved in the kidnapping of Mazhar Hussain, general-cum-project manager of an international non-governmental organisation ACTED (Agence d’Aide à la Coopération Technique Et au Développement).

“In May 2009, Mehsud and others kidnapped Hussain from Rajanpur and took him to Ladha in South Waziristan by road via Dera Ismail Khan and Dera Ghazi Khan,” he added.

Quoting Mehsud, the AEC chief said Hussain’s driver, who also hails from Waziristan, proposed the idea of Hussain’s kidnapping to the militants and made the kidnapping successful.

“I don’t know the exact ransom that our group had demanded, but I think it was initially Rs 25 million and later set to Rs 2.5 million. They gave me around Rs 55,000, from which I spent Rs 30,000 for a rental car in which the victim was taken to Ladha. The rest was my commission,” Mehsud told the investigators.

The AEC chief added that the accused was working in the banned organisation under the supervision of Taliban commander Shamim Khan who operates the kidnapping for ransom wing of the Taliban in Waziristan for generating funds for the outfit.

UN commission has no powers to identify Benazir’s killers: Mumtaz

Friday, March 19, 2010
By News Desk
Karachi

Sindh National Front (SNF) Chief Mumtaz Bhutto has said that the UN commission probing the assassination of Benazir Bhutto could only submit a report into the case and it has no authority to identify and initiate action against the killers.

Talking to reporters after recording his statement before the UN commission here on Thursday, he said that it was criminal prosecution case and needed transparent probe by the police.

He alleged that the PPP leadership did not want to see justice in the case and it has been hiding the killers.

Mumtaz said that he had recorded his statement and now it was the commission’s responsibility to present the report based on facts, adding that action could be taken against killers had there been a complainant against them.

He said that President Asif Ali Zardari had said that he knew the killers of Benazir Bhutto but he has done nothing to nab the killers despite the passage of two years. The NSF chief said that he was ready to go to the police station for lodging an FIR if the police were ready for it.

Re: 27th December - a day to remember

There is a statement of Rehman Malik.
I never believe on him and feel that he is responsible for great damage to PPP because he is not a politician nor he is a security man. He has never been a PPP activist in past. But for the sake of record.

From Online
*Notable progress in investigations into BB’s to be divulged after 31 March: Rehman Malik *

KARACHI: Interior minister Rehman Malik has announced that there has been a notable progress in investigations into the assassination of late Benazir Bhutto.

Replying to the question of progress regarding murder of Benazir Bhutto, while talking to journalists, after concluding his meeting with PML (F) head, Pir Pagara in Kingri House on Sunday, he said that any premature disclosures might compromise the investigations, hence the public should wait until 31st March, for substantial disclosures.

He also assured of strict measures against target killings in the city, and strongly refuted any differences among coalition partners MQM over local body elections; saying that a final round of talks was going on between both PPPP and MQM.

Earlier, while talking to Pir Pagara, the interior minister invited the PML (F) head to Islamabad as his (Rehman Malik’s) personal guest, promising Pir Sahib a trip to Bhurban as well.

The Interior minister also expressed his keen devotion for Pir Sahib, since Rehman Malik’s Karachi University days, while both also deliberated over socio-political situation of the country.

Pir Sahib expressed his keen and best wishes for President Asif Ali Zardari and PM, Yousaf Raza Gilani, while Rehman Malik also gifted a sword to Pir Sahib.

He also said that Pir Sahib had given him many useful advices, which he would definitely follow.

After N$ suicide attack on 18th amendment , Last two days were some type of suicide attacks by some honorable and now President Zardari is not behind.
What he did ?
See below but I am sure Rehman Malik has advised him to do so.

**UN report on death of Benazir Bhutto delayed **

Benazir Bhutto was assassinated leaving a party rally in December 2007

**A United Nations report into the assassination of Benazir Bhutto has been delayed at Pakistan's request.**

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon accepted a postponement until 15 April hours before its scheduled release.
Pakistan’s former prime minister was killed in a gun and suicide bomb attack during an election campaign as she left a rally in Rawalpindi in December 2007.
The country’s information minister said the delay was requested so two former heads of state could give their input.
Qamar Zaman Kaira said the two unnamed officials had warned Mrs Bhutto her life might be in danger and “could be helpful to the commission in finding who was behind her assassination”.
Security alert
A UN spokesman, Martin Nesirky, confirmed the report had been finished and that neither the UN secretary general nor the Pakistani government had seen it.
The report, withheld at the request of Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari - Mrs Bhutto’s widower - follows a nine-month inquiry into the facts and circumstances of the killing.

Ex-President Pervez Musharraf had refused to seek a UN probe

The three-person inquiry team was led by Chile's ambassador to the UN, Heraldo Munoz.

It also includes Marzuki Darusman, the former Indonesian attorney-general, and Peter Fitzgerald, who led an early inquiry into the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
The panel was set up following a request from Pakistan’s coalition government, led by Mrs Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party.
The previous government, led by allies of former President Pervez Musharraf, had blamed Pakistani Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud for the assassination. He was killed in a US drone strike last August.
The trials of several Islamist militants charged in connection with the assassination are ongoing.
Mrs Bhutto was the first woman to become prime minister of a Muslim country. No post-mortem examination was held following her death.
Before the delay was announced, a UN spokeswoman in Islamabad was quoted by AFP news agency as saying that all of the organisation’s offices in the country would close for three days from Wednesday “to avoid any unwanted situation” related to the report’s publication.
It was unclear whether any closure would now go ahead.

BBC

If the report is completed why is information ministry/Zardari seeking former heads' inputs? Zardari probably wants someone to check out the reports before being published/becoming official. So much money has been wasted on this investigation and in the end Zardari asks to delay the report, pathetic.

The matter is not so simple. In this type of conspiracy different stake holders are often involved. The killers are afraid and they must have their men in government so they misguided perhaps. I never think that Zardari is intelligent enough and the other bad habit with him is that he trusts friends while there is never a friend of a king.
I am afraid of the day when he will say, "Rehman | you too".

You say they must have their men in government, are you saying some PPP MNAs who could've conspired in BiBi's murder?

Also, do you really believe Zardari has friends? I believe there are no friends in any mafia.

One more thing, the investigation is completed by UN, not govt of Pakistan so ex-leaders couldn't have influenced anything in the report. What is Zardari trying to hide?

No MNA even MPA can think of this. No elected person could be pointed out any time but the government consists many others and often they are used without a complete knowledge
I also don’t believe but perhaps Zardari believes that he has friends.
Main question of this probe.
Who was having links with Baitullah
and who funded ?
I got something more.
MNA s of PPP are very angry on delay.

PM for patience on UN report

Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani asked the members National Assembly to observe patience for release of the United Nations report on Benazir Bhutto’s assassination. “Let the concerned person come, he will reply. And the concerned person is Interior Minister who is Minister-in-Waiting with the Turkish Prime Minister,” the Prime Minister said, in response to a point of order by opposition member Raza Hayat Hiraj.
“When this House and the provincial assemblies had unanimously decided that the United Nations should probe this matter, how we can cause a delay. BB is our leader and she sacrificed her life for democracy and the people of Pakistan,” Gilani said.
The Prime Minister said, “we should not discuss the issue when the relevant authority is not there to brief.” Commenting on another point, the Prime Minister said, according to parliamentary traditions the members do not cast aspersions on the Speaker and if any members had any reservations he is used to meet the Speaker in her Chamber.
Raza Hayat Hiraj had stated that the report was to be presented to the United Nations Secretary General on March 31. But despite that a hefty amount was spent on it, the report has been delayed on Pakistan’s request.
“We are also waiting the report as our party was pronounced ‘Murderer League’ and we want to know who has been held responsible in this report,” he added.
Meanwhile, Makhdoom Faisal Saleh Hayat had demanded, his party will know the report even if it had held the PML-Q responsible. “We shall acknowledge the report even if we are held responsible. But, if we are not accused, then the government will have to tender apologies for alleging us.”

**I have some idea, wanted to share.

May be this delay is caused to pass 18th amendment first.

**‘Who Assassinated Benazir Bhutto’ by Shakeel Anjum**

A book that may unravel many mysteries

        Thursday, April 01, 2010
        By Usman Manzoor

Islamabad: At a time when the nation is awaiting the findings of the United Nations Mission probing the assassination of Pakistan People’s Party Chairperson Benazir Bhutto, one of the most respected journalists of Pakistan, Shakeel Anjum, has penned an investigative book revealing almost every aspect of Benazir’s murder.

The book, ‘Who Assassinated Benazir Bhutto’, is an investigation carried out by the crime reporter of daily ‘The News’ in the past two years, coupled with his discussion with officials of intelligence agencies, police sleuths dealing with the murder and those who had carried out investigations, first with the British Scotland Yard and later with the United Nations’ Mission.

The book covers almost every aspect of Benazir’s murder and reveals many hidden secrets for which the people of Pakistan in general and the PPP workers in particular have been waiting for over two years. Analysts believe that the book by Shakeel Anjum is a comprehensive study of Benazir’s murder where the writer has revealed earth-shaking news pointing towards those in power. At the same time, he has wisely kept the decision to be made by his readers after showing them the leads of various ‘plans’ which were hatched before and after Benazir’s murder.

The 300-page book joins many dots that are yet to be linked and answers many so-called theories that were presented after the high profile murder. The ‘lever theory’ presented by the Interior Ministry and later endorsed by the Scotland Yard team is one among those negated by Anjum. In his book, he has also raised questions about those who washed the crime scene within an hour of Benazir’s assassination and have not been interrogated. It merits mentioning here that Anjum is an Islamabad-based journalist having over 33 years of experience in field reporting and has been closely watching every development related to Benazir’s murder.

And this is an end to UN probe.

GEO Pakistan**
UN rejects Pak’s request to reopen BB murder probe** Updated at: 1811 PST, Thursday, April 01, 2010

NEW YORK: The United Nations on Thursday rejected Pakistan’s request to reopen the independent probe into the killing of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, saying there is no need to include any further information as the report is “complete”.

“The Commissioners have informed the United Nations that the report is complete,” UN spokesperson Martin Nesirky told journalists here.

“They believe that they have finished their work and that there is no need to include any further information. It is for them to consider whether they need to change their report,” he said, a day after President Asif Ali Zardari requested UN to delay the release of the report on the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.

The UN has not commented on the reason for the delay in disclosing the report but Pakistan’s presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar said the government wanted the commission’s report to include the comments of the three countries that had warned Bhutto.

Pakistan wants the commission “to include in its report the comments of those three countries which had warned (Bhutto) on her return to Pakistan (in October 2007) that there were serious threats to her life and that she should take adequate precautionary measures,” Babar told the media.

“We suggested to the commission that it would be helpful if the viewpoint of those three countries and their heads of governments, which had warned (Bhutto), are also incorporated,” he said.

Responding to whether the commission would open investigations in light of Pakistan’s assertion about including the three governments, Nesriky said, "Commissioners have seen a considerable amount of relevant information, including what has been in the news media in recent days.

“After conferring in light of the latest information, they continue to say that they have completed their work.”

UNITED NATIONS: A UN spokesperson Tuesday flatly denied a Pakistani press report that the government has sought further delay in the release of UN Commission's report on Benazir Bhutto's assassination, saying the report will be published next week.

“We have received no new request,” Spokesperson Marie Okabe said, while answering a question at the regular noon briefing.
The report, in a section of the press, said the Pakistan government has requested the UN to further delay the publication of the report until June or even beyond. On March 30, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon accepted a request from President Asif Ali Zardari to delay the release of a report until April 15.
The three-member Commission, headed by Chilean Ambassador Heraldo, was set up following a request from the Pakistani Government and began its work in July 2009.
The commission members include Marzuki Darusman, the former attorney-general of Indonesia, and Peter Fitzgerald, a veteran of the Irish National Police who has also served the UN in a number of capacities.
The Commission has informed the Secretary-General that, as of today, all relevant facts and circumstances have been explored, and the report is now complete and ready to be delivered,” a March 31 official UN statement said.
The Commission, whose term has ended, will submit its report on April 15 to the UN chief, who will share the report with the Pakistani Government and submit it to the Security Council for information. -APP

BB’s murder report

              Published: April 8, 2010

THE US magazine Foreign Policy has levelled the charge that Pakistan is deliberately trying to sabotage the UN report on the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. It has based this contention on the argument that the Zardari set-up believes that the findings give a severe reprimand to the security establishment of the country for not only its poor arrangements for Benazir’s safety, but also its act of literally washing off the evidence from the crime scene shortly after the tragedy took place. The magazine has also lamented the fact that the President on whose behest the UN has delayed the publication does not have a clue about the issue.
Ever since President Zardari assumed office, he has been saying that he knows the identity of the killers and would find them, but it is a pity that now when the probe has been carried out, he goes back on his word, as if he is reluctant to face the reality. It is a crying shame that the murderers have gone scot-free largely because of the lack of courage by the present dispensation to conduct thorough investigations. The public and PPP jialias are getting edgy and must be wondering why the President had to desperately ask UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon not to release the report. Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar has suggested that three foreign heads of state, who had warned Benazir of what the future holds for her, should also be included. Nevertheless, the report should not have been kept from the public, solely for this reason.
This amounts to questioning the ability and professionalism of members of the inquiry commission, which includes Peter Fitzgerald who had successfully carried out the investigation into the killing of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. The investigation should now be made public, the culprits tracked down and brought to justice.

Re: 27th December - a day to remember

So what happened ? Is report is going to be out there or not, why Zardari and his pals have developed a habit of converting everything into crisis?

Re: 27th December - a day to remember

The PPP Is asking for the report to be redone. That is the latest I have heard. They want security heads of Afghanistan, UAE, Saudi Arabia and someone from the US to be interviewed. No idea why.

UN has rejected the request/appeal.. they maintain the stand that report is complete and need no further investigation/interviews

This is habit of zardari and co to make crisis of almost everything, i think the purpose of such request is to make the damage credibility of the report..

Re: 27th December - a day to remember

Ah they did. They agreed to release it on the 15th of April 2010. Lets see what they have to say:

DAWN.COM | World | UN delays release of Bhutto slaying report

Are you so simple ?
Pakistani politics is something else.
Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto once said to his cabinet that Do you think we are ruling?
We are not ruling actually others are ruling.
He was only powerful civilian ruler so what happened to him ?
Once N$ was in this type mistake but he escaped alive because he was ......
So I don't think Zardari is so powerful and I pointed out little bit in start of my post.

Re: 27th December - a day to remember

And see what i said just before.
He is C.N. of PPP perhaps now.http://news.google.com.pk/news/tbn/_g8KbLJ-c2oJ

**Pak confirms requesting for delay in UN report over Benazir murder for want of facts **

Islamabad, Apr.8 (ANI): Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik has said that Islamabad had asked the ](http://news.oneindia.in/2010/04/08/pakconfirms-requesting-for-delay-in-un-report-overben.html#) (UN) to delay the investigation report concerning former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s assassination, as it wants inputs from the US and Saudi Arabia to be included in the document.

Buzz up!
It may be noted that upon President Asif Ali Zardari’s request, US Secretary General Ban Ki-moon had delayed the publication of the probe report till mid-April.nteracting with reporters here, Malik said: “People of Pakistan want a proper report substantiated by facts.”

“I have requested that the commission seek input from former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Saudi Arabia, and include it in its report,” The Daily Times quoted Malik, as saying.

“The UN has informed me that they expect the information would be available to them and the good thing is that President Karzai’s office has confirmed that information will be provided,” he added.

Earlier, the UN rejected reports in the Pakistani media that the government had sought a further delay in the publication of the investigation report.

“We have received no new request,” UN spokesperson Marie Okabe had said, adding that the report would be released next week.

The Pakistani media had flashed reports that the government has requested the UN to further delay the publication of the report until June or even beyond.

The three-member UN commission, headed by Chilean Ambassador Heraldo Munoz, was set up following a request by the Pakistani government to probe the December 2007 attack on Bhutto, and began its work in July 2009 and was supposed to submit its report by March 31, 2010. (ANI)

**Musharraf plotted Benazir’s assassination: Talal Bugti **

Friday, April 9, 2010,6:12 [IST

slamabad, Apr.9 (ANI): Top Baloch leader and Jamhoori Watan Party (JWP) chief Nawab Talal Bugti has blamed former Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf for Benazir Bhutto’s assassination, saying the autocratic ruler wanted to divide the country and rule for years to come.

Buzz up!
Addressing the Islamabad Bar Association, Bugti also held Musharraf responsible for his father, Nawab Akbar Bugti’s death.

“Benazir was called back home on the pretext of the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) so that she could be assassinated,” Bugti said.

“The main agenda of Musharraf was to break up the country and, therefore, he assassinated late Benazir and Akbar Bugti,” he added.

Criticizing the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) government for following Musharraf’s policies, Bugti stressed that ‘provincial autonomy’ was the need the need of the hour, and that it would ultimately strengthen the ‘federation’.

He also blasted the government for initiating a military operation in Balochistan, and said people of the region would continue to resist the oppression with full force.

“We are ready to fight for the motherland but unfortunately a large-scale military operation is under way in Balochistan,” The News quoted Bugti, as saying. (ANI)

I don’t think that Bugti is saying that all on some sufficient evidence with him.
